Where have you been? Didn't you watch the game last night?

You're a bit late, but hey..it's not your fault.

Gionta's injury turned out to be a lot worse than people first thought, and I just hope that he's back 100% healthy come playoff time. I don't mind having him on the IR now as long as he's getting better. This will also take some pressure off of him, and he won't rush back.

Putting him on IR also gives the Devils cap space to bring up replacements from Lowell, which they did when they re-called Rod Pelley and David Clarkson.

I'd love to have Gio in the lineup, but considering the situation we're in and the severity of his injury, I like the fact that he's been put on IR. That way he'll be ready for the playoffs while it also gives us a full squad by calling up guys from Lowell.

yeah doesn't really mean anything. It's just to get some room to call some guys up. He will be back for playoffs.

I wonder if Matvichuk will be activated. He is practicing with the team.

This was a case of the team needed to call a bunch of players up and needed the cap room to do. Considering Gionta was out the longest he was placed because they can retroactively do it to when he last played and thus he would be the first to be eligible to come off when healthy. It's not really an indication of how bad he is hurt (although it obviously is worse than first thought). He can come off the IR April first so if he's ready to go by then he will have a week to get back into game shape for the playoffs.
