If Jay Pandolfo doesn't...

win the Selke Award this year, then you shouldn't even bother giving it out. I understand that Jere Lehtinen is having another good year with Dallas as a defensive forward, but Pandolfo does it without taking any penalties and has to play Crosby 8 times a year, Jagr 8 times a year, Forsberg about 5 times until he was traded, and Yashin NEVER scores against the Devils. Madden is good too, but this year it's been Jay who's been the defensive star.

JAY PANDOLFO for the SELKE!

ppl quickly judge him by seeing his -2 status.

I agree with the original post. The guy just is the definition of what the Selke is, and if they won't acknowledge that he is the epitome of a winner then they might as well not even have the award.

Heīs been great but some production along with good +/- is a big factor too.

The question is how the heck Pandolfo is -2 playing for the second best defensive team in the league ? Professional writers who vote for Selke are not only from East coast. I believe journalists from Calgary or Edmonton, who didnīt see Jay this year will take this very seriously in consideration.

The Selke is not handed out to the best defensive forward most years..It is handed out to the best defensive forward who can score goals and has nice numbers..Same with the Norris..not best defenseman..it's best defenseman who has great offensive numbers...

Yeah. That's true no doubt about it, but quite frankly some of those awards I think they should just let the players vote for. Maybe have the league pick 5 or 10 guys as finalists and just let them do it. It might seem crazy or outlandish and maybe guys are prone to favor teammates over rivals but I think it would suffice.

Or even take it a step further and make some awards East and West so both worlds can get acknowledgment. Because letting the media vote, they don't all see the same guys, or candidates enough to make a fair vote. Out here we don't see Edmonton games, or almost any Western game that isn't a big rivalry (ala Colorado / Detroit). So for all we know maybe someone out West has been a subtle, but dominant guy. I think thats a good way to describe Jay, out here he's sort of infamous in a quiet way, while out West I bet most people don't even know what team he's on (in terms of fans).

He plays against the top scorers in the league and his line doesn't put up much offense. That's a recipe for have a minus +/-. In fact that it is only -2 is a credit to how good he is defensively.

Exactly the fact that he's only -2 when playing 20 mins a game against the other teams best forwards is amazing, but deceiving stat for those who don't follow the devils.

Madden usually plays Crosby, but still Jay helps out and should still win the Selke

Scott Gomez seems to agree with the orginal post as well.

"Clarkson and Pelley came in and did a great job," Scott Gomez said. "Pelley played with (Jay Pandolfo), probably the Selke Trophy winner. And we knew Clarkson would be up here sooner or later."

Definitely should get it. No question. Especially for how long and well he has been in that role. The guy was a goal scorer in college and now he accepts his role as a defensive forward. I love Jay.

The only way Jay Pandolfo ever wins the Selke is if he misses a year with some injury, the Devils suck that year, he comes back and they return to a 2.3 goals allowed per game.

It sounds childish to say that, but it is the only way the voters will go, "Hmm, maybe he is good."

Lastly, the ****ing writers' association that votes on the awards has Al Strachan and Larry Brooks as part of the chair or in some position of power. I forget their exact positions, but they make decisions. That spells doom for Jay. A New Jersey Devil has to have the career years of all career years to win an award.

Edit: Brooks is the PRESIDENT!!! Oh lord.

Pandolfo should definitely get some serious Selke consideration, but we all know he won't. People will look at a guy like Lehtinen or Brind'amour, or somebody else and see the offensive stats, and probably a plus rating and say they're better than Pandolfo. The other problem is that he and Madden are pretty close in terms of playing the shutdown role. I don't know if you can say that one is all that much better than the other, because they kind of feed off each other.

Oh ****. Mabe Marty won't get the Vezina because we have foolish fools who foolishly weild foolish power, much less Jay getting the Selke.

He should put up some SH tallys as well... His efforts on his own end are exceptional, but he should have a lot better in +/- category to be amongst the candidates...

It'll be a Lombardi/Staal/Smolinski race at the end IMO.

If he's up for it Staal will win it because if SH goals, and the fact they want to start using his family as an advertising campaign so people don't get too bored by Crosby and Ovechkin.

This is a business...remember?

Hey, at least this is the first time I've ever heard Jay Pandolfo's name mentioned by announcers, writers and players as a legit candidate for the award. I think this has been his finest season in the NHL, and he absolutely OWNS Jagr, etc., which is kinda hard to miss, even if you are a NJ Devils hating hockey writer.

Ours is a defense first system and his play has been a stellar exemplar of that. He deserves real consideration, +/- stats or not.

Yeah, but remember it's all about "the system" with the Devils. It doesn't matter who plays what role, everybody's defensive stats look better because of "the system". If it wasn't for the almighty "system" that the Devils, and the Devils alone, play Pandolfo and the rest would just be borderline NHL players...

And yes, I'm being sarcastic.:D

In related news in this week's Sports Illustrated there was articel on Pandolfo in the Inside the NHL section pushing for him to win the Lady Byng. The article was written by Farber and he called Pando the cleanest player in the NHL.

pandolfo Hands down deserves the Selke. The way he plays defense against the leagues top stars is amazing. Even in the "new" NHL he has even gotten better on "shadowing" the stars in the league...... Watching him play defense against some of the other teams players is amazing....
