I think I know why he was traded. The 'flu' which Hale had missed a game with at the trade deadline is actually his kidney ailment - he's been out as a result of it ever since the trade.
If, and I think Lou had to have, the organization knew they they knew that Hale would be missing considerable time with the ailment. If Hale had been on the cap, but unable to play, the Devils would have had no cap room to replace him for the remained for the season - not even to call up Greene. We'd have been stuck down yet another defenseman.
I think as soon as Lou realized that it was the kidney condition he was forced to make the trade, which is probably why we didn't get much for him and why Lou had to throw in the fifth to get the deal done.
