David Puddy 02-13-2007, 07:57 AM The title of this thread should be: Star-Ledger: "Clemmensen is right at home on the bench as Brodeur's backup," 2/13

Rich Chere has a nice feature article on Scott Clemmensen today, "Clemmensen is right at home on the bench as Brodeur's backup (http://www.nj.com/devils/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1171345257185110.xml&coll=1)."
Here is an excerpt:Don't feel sorry for Scott Clemmensen.
He earns $450,000 a year with the potential for bonuses and is fond of expensive jewelry. He stays in Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton hotels and warm-weather resorts during the winter. He dines in the finest restaurants across North America, and he has a front-row seat for almost every Devils regular-season and Stanley Cup playoff game.
I do feel a little bad for Scott. The last time he started, on December 14, he let in a really soft goal to start the game. That was after not appearing in a game for 53 days after getting 26 minutes in relief against Ottawa.
Here is another excerpt:
"Being the backup goalie in New Jersey is a very strange (job)," said Clemmensen, who is in his fourth season in the NHL. "You have to have a special type of personality to be in this position in this organization."
In Clemmensen's case, he's a laid-back Midwesterner from Des Moines, Iowa. He is, in fact, the only Iowa-born player to get to the NHL.
His idol isn't Patrick Roy or even former U.S. Olympic hero Jim Craig. It's Jimmy Buffett, the easygoing Gulf Coast singer/songwriter. The Devils' backup goalie is a Parrothead and he has a parrot painted on his mask to prove it.
The article is four pages long.

LOL, I think Scotty means, "He be a farmer"
DevilsFan38 02-13-2007, 08:35 AM Interesting article. I feel a little bad for Clemmer. Then I think about it, and realize that if I could I would take his job in a heartbeat. And then I don't feel so bad for him.

Exactly, 450,000 dollars for 3 nights work, roughly 150 minutes so 2 hours and 30 minutes, he makes 120,000 dollars an hour for his job and gets to watch every single game and talk to the players, get autographs, whatever he wants.
Mose Schrute 02-13-2007, 08:59 AM His earnings/mintue played may be the highest in the league.
Clemmer:450000*69.5% of the season gone = $312,805 earned this season/150minutes played $2,085.37/minute played.
Marty:5,200,000*69.5% of the season gone = $3,614,634 earned this season/3,268 minutes played $1,106.07/minute played
Basically, Clemmer makes twice as much as Marty does per minute played.

And then I don't feel so bad for him.How many goals would you let in if you sat for two or three months? I feel bad for him because it is almost impossible to have any kind of success in goal after sitting for as long as he does.
I think March 15 in Carolina is a game Clemmensen might start. The Devils play Pittsburgh the night before, and the Devils and Hurricanes play again in New Jersey two days later.
Also, could you fix the thread title for me? I was making the post, and I was going to cut and paste the article's title in my message and in the title. I typed Star-Ledger with a colon in the title, but I forgot to paste the article's title in the thread's title place. It should read:
Star-Ledger: "Clemmensen is right at home on the bench as Brodeur's backup," 2/13
Easton 02-13-2007, 12:02 PM If he wants to play, he should sign a minor league contract. That way he'll at least have a chance to prove himself. Who knows in the future he could at least land a decent backup role.

Oh I agree, it's a hard situation to be in as a pro athlete. That said, compared with the vast majority of people in the US he's got it pretty good.
I think he might play either the 24th or 25th against the Capitals, we have a home and home with them and there's no reason for Marty to play both days.

I should have looked at a calendar style schedule.
Maybe he will get a two more starts. That would give Marty 78 on the season, and a good chance for 50 wins and a chance to break his own record for minutes played, 4,555 set in 2003-04.
And thanks for fixing the title.
The article is four pages long.
This has to be the longest article ever written about him.
In fact, this has to be the longest period of time anyone has ever paid attention to him (i.e., interview, write, edit, post).

Um, what? :dunno:
So who else thinks this record will be broken?
"Since 1967-68, the first season in which the schedule was more than 70 games, the team with the fewest games played by the backup goalie or goalies in a non-lockout season is seven for the 2003-04 Devils. Clemmensen appeared in four games, Corey Schwab in three"

I think the record is in jeopardy.
My post was in reference to singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffet being Clemmer's hero. Greg Brown is a singer/songwriter from his home state of Iowa.
Hope that connects the dots.
Can't tell enough people about Greg Brown.
