Great article. Pandolfo really doesn't get the credit he deserves around the league, it's nice to see he's so appreciated by his teammates. I also found it interesting how they talked about forwards playing defense and their role in allowing the defense to step up and make a hit.
NYR94 02-12-2007, 04:31 PM Thanks for the article. Pandolfo is one of many players in the NHL who make important contributions to their team's success that don't necessarily turn up on the stat sheet every night. But it's always nice when defensive players like him get recognition.
he should have won at least the lady bing once.
bense27 02-12-2007, 04:55 PM Pandolfo a scorer? Wow, I had no idea!
FLYLine24 02-12-2007, 04:57 PM It doesn't say hes a Selke candidate, its just an article about how is is worthy of being one. They don't announce the nominations till much later.
TaiMaiShu 02-12-2007, 05:05 PM If Pando could win it we would be the 2nd to have linemates win it.
Btw: That picture of him stck-checking Heatley is sweet.
Jason MacIsaac 02-12-2007, 07:43 PM Problem is, who is better Madden or Pandolfo. Personally I think a winger should never win the selke, a center has so many more responsibilities then a winger.
Great article, but this line stood out to me...
The Devils have consistently been one of the NHL's best defensive teams over the past decade and Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko, Scott Niedermayer, Bruce Driver, Slava Fetisov, Alexei Kasatanov, Paul Martin and Martin Brodeur have gotten a lot of the credit.
Really? Paul Martin?

Really? Paul Martin?
I'm surprised they didn't put down Rafalski...or White (I'd have both of them ahead of Martin for "hogging the credit")
Martin hasn't really been any higher on the depth chart than a #3 barring injuries. Strange.
David Puddy 02-12-2007, 11:55 PM It doesn't say hes a Selke candidate, its just an article about how is is worthy of being one. They don't announce the nominations till much later. The top three vote getters are named after the regular season ends, and the are called finalists. Calling him a candidate simply means the writer thinks Pandolfo is worthy of notice.
I honestly don't think Pandolfo will be a finalist because the voters weight offensive statistics too much. They want someone who gets 15 goals and 20 assists as a minimum. Pandolfo is on pace for 12 Goals and 15 Assists. I don't really agree with it, but it seems to be the way the voting goes.
Lady Byng is something that Pandolfo should get. He only has 6 PIM through 56 games this year, and his job is to cover some of the best offensive players like Jaromir Jagr. To do his job well and only take three minor penalties is remarkable.
Problem is, who is better Madden or Pandolfo. Personally I think a winger should never win the selke, a center has so many more responsibilities then a winger.I agree with that statement for the most part. A centerman has a lot more responsibility than a winger, particularly faceoffs and covering guys down low in the defensive-zone.
TheDevilMadeMe 02-13-2007, 12:59 AM Jay has really emerged as the best shadow in the league this year. Just ask Jagr or Ovechkin.
Still, I don't see him winning with his stats. Not just the points, but also plus/minus. Though plus/minus is a worthless stat, especially when you are talking about the players who play against the other team's top line, voters still use it.

That might be true, but Pandolfo generally plays like a center when he shadows other players. Wings generally have opposing defensemen as defensive assignments, but Pandolfo sticks with his assigned forward while others take the defenseman he would normally be assigned.

Excellent piece. Thanks for posting. I hope lots of non-Devils fans read it and gain a new appreciation for the foundation of our success: selfless, hardworking, smart team play. If I were a Ranger fan I'd want everyone on the roster (and in the front office) to read it. As a Devil fan, I really hope they don't.:D

I don't think they will. They'll say it's boring and fall asleep because there's not enough goal scoring per paragraph.
