ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has recalled center Tim Brent and right wing Bjorn Melin from the Portland Pirates, Anaheim’s development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). At the same time, the club has assigned center Ryan Shannon to Portland.

Brent, 22 (3/10/84), has collected 7-9=16 points with 32 penalty minutes (PIM) in 25 games with Portland this season. The Cambridge, Ontario native scored 15-9=24 points in 37 games with Portland last season, setting career highs in goals and points.

Brent was drafted by Anaheim in the second round (37th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

The 25-year-old (7/4/81) Melin has played in 28 games with Portland this season, posting 7-7=14 points with eight PIM and a +9 rating. The 6-1, 205-pound winger played last season with HV-71 in Sweden, earning 17-19=36 points in 49 games. He helped Sweden to the gold medal at the 2006 World Hockey Championships with 0-2=2 points in six tournament games.

Melin was acquired with Ben Guite from the New York Islanders in exchange for Dave Roche on March 19, 2002. He was originally drafted by the New York Islanders in the sixth round (163rd overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Shannon, 23 (3/2/83), has played 38 games with Anaheim this season, earning 2-7=9 points with six PIM. The 5-9, 173-pound forward appeared in his first professional season in 2005-2006, earning 27-59=86 points in 71 games with Portland.

A native of Darien, Connecticut, Shannon was signed by Anaheim as a free agent on Nov. 28, 2005.

We are officially past the "it ain't broke, so don't fix it" phase. It took 3 straight losses to end the Shannon experiment. I wish him well in Portland and maybe he'll learn how to score again.

Didn't Shannon have four assists in the past 4-5 games? Maybe it was time to send him back to see if he can regain his confidence, but it's hard to see how he's responsible for the three straight losses---particularly since it appears to have been lapses by defensemen that have proven costly in those games.

Shannon has 2 assists in his last six games.

Brent has a goal and 2 assists in his last nine games.

I wasn't saying it was his fault, but the losses finally made Randy look at the lineup and see that Shannon was still not cutting it. He hasn't scored a goal in over 2 months. The losses are making Burke and Carlyle shake things up. Shannon should have been sent down long ago, but a winning team kept him here.

Those 2 assists came in 1 game. Before that he had 0 goals and 4 assists in about 2 months while playing on a scoring line.

Maybe the losses will get Carlyle to quit wasting Penner, putting him with Shannon and Marchant never ever clicked. those are 3 pass first players, gotta get Penner with a goal scorer.

I think our depth is a bit overrated, I mean who can you really count on to score in the playoffs besides the first line? Our checking line hasn't scored in a while, and it seems we have a makeshift line that does nothing most games and it tends to include Thornton with Penner thrown on the line.

I would like to see Penner on the Getzlaf or Selanne lines, give the guy someone who can score goals.

Well, I think we have scoring depth, but like you said, the lines seem to be a bit mistmatched. Our two scoring lines need to be made up of Kunitz, Mac, Selanne, Penner, Getzlaf and Perry in some combo. These are our 6 best offensive players, but the last three keep getting stuck with offensively deficient players on their lines...which I now realize is basically what you said. :D

I've said it repeatedly that Kunitz with the Twins and Penner on the top line makes the most sense. Carlyle flirts with it every once and a while but he just doesn't ever stick with it.

I agree it gives good balance to each line, Kunitz adds a fast forechecking element to the Getzlaf line and Penner creates space and can get Selanne good passes but one thing about Carlyle is when he's winning he won't change anything even if perhaps there are better alternatives..

This move was overdue, Shannon may become a legit top 6 forward in the NHL in a year or two...but he should not be in Anaheim right now.

Brent deserves the call up...Melin I'm not so sure, but I've never seen him play so we shall see.

Any chance Melin will get to play any games or will he just sit on the bench? Melin is one of my favorite players to watch (HV71-fan...), would be nice to see him in the NHL, doubt he can do the moves he does in SEL but still, it would be nice to see him again.

I'm hoping Melin will take Shannon's spot in the lineup for at least Friday's game, but we'll have to wait and see what Carlyle does.

Brent should put Green back in the stands. Not been overly impressed with Green... didn't expect much outside of face offs but he's barely over 40% so he's not even doing that.

It looks like Carlyle is switching to 2 clear offensive lines and 2 checking lines, I kinda like that.

Penner-Getzlaf-Perry, let's hope we'll see that for 15-20mins per game.

I belive both of them will get to play...

Im expecting something like this:

Kunitz - McDonald - Selänne
Penner - Getzlaf - Perry
Moen - Påhlsson - R. Niedermayer
Thornton - Brent - Melin

I think maybe you are rolling your joints a little too tight! The one player who did deserve a call up & was never given a chance was Parenteau, and if my memory serves me correctly, you sir were never much of a suporter. I agree with you on one point though, and that is that Shannon should have been sent down a long time ago, as were Perry & Getz last year when their production & intensity dropped off. The little remaing respect I had for your prospect recognition skills totaly flew out the window with the statement that Brent deserved the call up. Explain to me how Anaheim is going to improve by replacing one non productive player by another. After trading Parenteau ( #1 goal scorer on the team) the first call up should have been Konopka. BTW where was your boy Chistov in last nights 10-2 pasting against a badly crippled Toronto. Half of the Leafs right now are AHL players. With reguards to Parenteau, I guess its true what they say, in order to recieve something good you have to give up something good, Good luck in the Chicago organization P.A. and keep smiling

Wow, where were all the Parenteau fans before we traded him? Everyone is all upset that we traded him to somewhere he will play instead of keeping him here where he apparently doesn't fit the system and would be stuck in the AHL for another 80 years.

apparently paranteau's entire family registered to hfboards.

the fact remains that brent established himself where it matters, AT TRAINING CAMP. he was in the last cuts, and the plan to bring him up was already in place before the season started.

Of course the defense was thin, but the offense didn't seem confident in the last few games. Selanne had 4 goals in 3 games, and the rest of the team 3 goals. Maybe these new guys can light a spark for guys like Andy Mac and Kunitz.

Also anyone know why Z didn't get the call up?

The Parenteau family obviously isn't good with jokes about their fellow family members. :sarcasm:

Seriously though, I don't like Shannon much either. I was just mocking the love for Parenteau that never existed before he was traded.

Actually, the more I look at it, do you know how to read? I don't know how you could confuse me for a Shannon fanboy in anything I said. In fact, I did nothing but knock him down in this thread.

Good. Eventually he'll get his chance to come back, but let him stay there for awhile and light up the AHL. Hopefully when he comes back to the big club, he'll go to the net instead of cylcing along the boards.

Brent was recalled because he replacing Marchant......Melin was recalled for what was termed a motivational recall.

Right now the Ducks have 15 forwards....They will need to make a move when Marchant comes back because they are not going to sit 3 forwards a night...I'd expect they send Brent and Melin back and rotate Parros and Green as needed for the 12th forward spot. Should an injury arise then make the proper recall at that time.

It will take alot for Konopka to be recalled...he's not being blackballed or anything like that but this Ducks organization is extremely deep.
