Are any Ducks fan still upset about that event? I remember that I was crying on that day when Pittsburgh got Crosby.

About missing Crosby? The Ducks are better for it. Look at the team that has been built here compared to that team in Pittsburgh. No team has done less with more high picks. This team would be compleletly different with Crosby and I'm not sure if it would be better.

As for picking Ryan? Not sure until he's plays on the big club or is an official bust.

I wanted Sid, he's the best guy from the draft, but the way things have turned out since that are great. I don't like the guy we picked at 2nd, Ryan's not going to be helping this team any time soon.

I have no complaints about the way this team has been built, but I think you're off base when you that "[T]he Ducks are better for it (i.e., not having picked Crosby). Barring injury, Crosby will be one of the top two or three players in the NHL for years to come. Excellent scorer and playmaker. Hard to see how he wouldn't improve any team.

My thoughts as well. I can't think of one team in the NHL that wouldn't be an improved team with Crosby.

As I said before, I'm thinking butterfly effect here.

Draft Crosby.
Now do we get Nieds? Do we get Selanne? I'll give those a probably.
Do the Federov and Sykora trades go through? Maybe, maybe not.
Does McDonald ever have his breakthrough year? Maybe, maybe not.
Do Kunitz, Getzlaf, Penner, and Perry get the playing time that it took to get where they are now? Maybe, maybe not.
Do we make the Conference Finals? Maybe, maybe not.
Do we get Pronger? Probably not.

Add Crosby to this team right now, it's improved. Add Crosby to the team we had before last season and I don't think we end up with a team that could compete with this one. Basically, at that draft, the Ducks weren't all that much better than Pittsburgh was. These days Pittsburgh still sucks (although slightly less) and the Ducks have improved light years.

One thing is for sure. Crosby would've been better protected here than he was in Pitt his first year.

Having 4 good young players doesn't mean success...

How good do the Penguins look with Fleury, Whitney, Crosby and Malkin?

Wasn't the draft order annouced opposite of the way the balls were actually drawn? I can't remember but if so, the Ducks never even had a chance at Crosby after the Pens were drawn first to get the #1 pick.

I remember my heart beating all fast when the last 2 picks were about to be announced though. And, I agree w/ MD19--I was still excited that the Ducks would get JJ only to see the them pass him up on draft day.

Ducks weren't that close to landing Crosby, it was only because of that "dramatic" way NHL wanted to show the draft (NHL needed all the drama it could get after lock-out) that made it look like Ducks were close to landing Crosby.

me:( Hes from my hometown, my favorite non duck and he would bring insane amounts of coverage to the ducks here in halifax. To say we would be like pittsburgh is insane. Who knows we might of been the exact team we are now with crosby instead of bobby ryan and if you dont think we would be a better team then, your drunk.

I see your point, Davy, and I find it interesting. But you have so many variables---all those "maybe, maybe nots"---the majority of which would have to be answered "maybe not" to make your "butterfly effect" valid.

Crosby is the cornerstone to the Pittsburgh/Kansas City/Portland/Who-Know-Where/Penguins. Moreover, he would have been the cornerstone for any franchise that drafted him. Even with a salary cap in place, the lucky franchise would have done everything it could to keep Crosby a (fill in the blank: e.g., Penguin, Duck, etc.) for the next 15+ years.

If you were right and we wound up with Crosby, but no Pronger, obviously, we would not be as strong as we are right now---and probably for the next few years, too. However, with a G.M. like Burke in place and a marquee-player like Crosby, don't you think Burke would have been able to persuade some free-agent talent to come this way?

Davey Duck
01-08-2007, 07:18 PM
Yeah, it was hard to say they definitely wouldn't have happened because who knows what Burke had in the works. I lean toward maybe not on more of those than maybe. Feds and Sykora probably still would have been traded if Burke didn't like them, but we he have traded them at the same point in the season and/or got the same deals done? Also, when those deals would have happened if they did would have had a huge impact on the kid's playing time. I really don't think McDonald would have had his breakout year as our #3 center to open the season. How far we made it in the playoffs is impossible to determine. Overall, I just don't think the pieces fall into place as well as they have and I'm not sure that Burke would be able to take on Pronger's salary if all those changes weren't made during last season.

I was very happy and shocked when word leaked before the draft that the Ducks were going to take Bobby Ryan.

Yeah, I had forgotten that hockey is the biggest sport at Michigan. Too bad Big Ten football has been such a best. :)
