MrWhisker 12-29-2006, 12:53 PM Need to pick up the pace from last game.
Take advantage of the home ice, strike early, and don't give their offense an inch.
Lets Go Devils. :yo:
ADD-devil950003 12-29-2006, 12:58 PM haha whats goin on ryan, you are very right, we cant give they caps anything, hopefully atleast 2 goals from the EGG line tonight!
LETS GO DEVILS!!!!!!!!!
Devilsfanatic 12-29-2006, 01:00 PM 7th on the PP and 3rd on the PK that is why the team is in first in the ATL.
AfroThunder396 12-29-2006, 01:02 PM Washington just lost two big games to Buffalo and Montreal. We always play these guys well, shut down the first line and score some goals!
Ronnie Bass 12-29-2006, 01:02 PM 7th on the PP and 3rd on the PK that is why the team is in first in the ATL.
You know I didn't realize we were doing that good with our special teams.
Classic Devil 12-29-2006, 01:06 PM When I look at those stats and see that the Devils are seventh on the powerplay, all it tells me is that the league must be really, really terrible at it this season.
Our powerplay has been awful.
ADD-devil950003 12-29-2006, 01:12 PM Its so funny because i live with 2 rangers fans and there are always rangers fans in my house all the time. When watching a devils game they always do the same thing, complain how boring we are (eventhough 1st in the ATL) and how much our special teams suck, like what was said above we are 7th on the PP and 3rd on the PK, rangers are 10th in PP and 20th on PK, man we must suck huh? (eventhough none of them will admit it) its nice to know fans of the big city blue skirts are jealous of our "boring devils" i guess winning would make anyone who isnt jealous....
Devilsfanatic 12-29-2006, 01:24 PM Marty is now #3 in the NHL in goals against average. He also has the most games played amongst the leaders, Hasek has played 28 to Marty's 34 and Nabakov has played 19.......

Dude are you on drugs? Our defense isn't that good at all!! It's not like we have Stevens and Niedermayer anymore, that was just.....oh wait, you're being sarcastic ;)
ADD-devil950003 12-29-2006, 01:33 PM i think its safe to say by now, Marty is the best goalie in the league, world, what the hell, maybe even universe, but i have heard that mars is puttin out some sick goalies these days:dunce:

My condolences.
Ask them specifically what it is that is boring? Tell them to point it out to you as they're watching a Devils game with you. Ask questions. I'm sure you'll stump them. I do it all the time to NYR fans or others who spew the same rhetoric I'd bet you they wouldn't be able to do it. Chances are the other team will be playing the exact same style as the Devils. In the few regular season games the NYR have beaten us the last 2 seasons, especially last year, the NYR would trap heavily once they'd gotten the lead. I'd point this out to NYR fans that I was with, and they'd become very angry and full of denial. Many people who criticize the Devils only do so because they keep reading the "Devils are boring" mantra that circulates on message boards like this, blogs, sports websites, etc. They have no idea what the trap, the 1-2-2, backchecking or good defense are.
ADD-devil950003 12-29-2006, 02:20 PM Oh i do it all the time, i have one friend who reads things off HF and comes to me and just states whatever he saw on the ranger board or any other message board that bashes the devils. my return statement always has to do with 1995 2000 and 2003, and how most NHL teams play the trap at one point or another. True, you can only dodge a bullet so many times. I think Ovechkin could have a big game, all I would be looking for from the Madden line tonight is containment.
David Puddy 12-29-2006, 04:21 PM When I look at those stats and see that the Devils are seventh on the powerplay, all it tells me is that the league must be really, really terrible at it this season.
Our powerplay has been awful.Have you watched the recent games? Prior to going 0 for 6 against the Penguins, the Devils were 18 for 57 over the previous 13 games. That's 31.6%, which staggeringly good. It is quite far from being awful. I can't believe you would say such a thing.
The Devils 19.2% over the first 36 games of this season would rank tied for 5th with Montreal when compared to the 2005-06 season. Detroit had the best power play success rate when they scored on 22.1% of their power plays.
The entire league is 17.3% (1,014 for 5,859) this season. The league was successful 17.7% (2,545 for 14,394) last year.

It's probably the fact that the last two or three games are the only ones I've actually gotten to watch this season (and our puck movement on the PP was pretty bad those games), since I don't have a television. I didn't realize our conversion rate had been so good prior to my arrival home. Maybe I should get rid of the TV here too. :help:
Regardless, it's nice to see us finding a way to convert on the PP. Credit to the coaching staff.

Devil Dancer 12-29-2006, 05:15 PM The Caps defensive corps has been decimated by injuries and illness, plus your Jersey boys tend to play well against the Caps anyway. Please don't embarrass us too badly tonight! :(

Kolzig is good, but Johnson has also played very well for the Capitals, I've seen him stand on his head in a few games. I'm more worried about Ovechkin (and Semin) than their goalies, especially since the Devs should get plenty of rebound chances since the Caps defense is terrible.

i left for the devs pens game really early, and the back lot wasnt open yet. never parked so close to the arena, it was nice avoiding the bridge for once.
DevilsFan38 12-29-2006, 07:19 PM Go Devils! :devdance:
One of my roommates is a Capitals fan, so this is an important game for bragging rights :D
You guys should win this one in a walk. If you don't you should be ashamed. If you lose someone should be fired. The Caps have almost no defensemen.
Pothier has the flu, but will try to play.
Morrisonn has Mono and has recovered enough to try it.
Eminger is out...flu
Erskin out...broken foot
Muir out....broken foot
Green(rookie)
Nycolat is in...career ahl
Hunt(first nhl game)
Hebling(first nhl game)
plus Zednik and Bradley on IR.
plus the caps have sutherby and pettinger out with the flu too and are already at the NYC hotel.....have fun tonight.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 07:36 PM Ovechkin doesn't have the flu. Fortunate from a hockey fan standpoint; possibly not so fortunate from a Devils standpoint.
GO DEVILS! The puck drops soon.
DevFan-RU- 12-29-2006, 07:38 PM To be honest, I'd rather the Devils play teams when they are at their best (few injuries, doing well). That way when we win, it will be a more meaningful victory.

You're welcome.

Nycholat lights a laser beam past Brodeur. He screams in delight were audible. As were my groans of dissapointment.
1-0 Caps.

Nyco is a callup from the bears, this is like his 4th or 5th total NHL game. He played once with the Rangers and now with us the past few.
Word is his size is whats kept him out of the NHL, because he's a great AHL defenseman.

Size? How small is he? You can be pretty shrimpy and still succeed in the NHL these days (the Devils are a great example of that).
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 07:52 PM The Nycholat shot apparantly hit a Devils d-man's stick prior to reaching Brodeur. Chico said so, so take it for what that's worth.
Speaking of him, he just trips up Parise when he misplays a puck in his own zone. So he'll sit for 2 minutes.
Devils PP, let's score on it, Devs!

DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 07:57 PM It says a lot about the Caps defense when Mike Rupp gets a legit scoring chance.

Question though for the Caps fans, is Donald Brashear really "hulking?"
mdj12784 12-29-2006, 07:59 PM What? :dunno:

DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:09 PM GOMEZ RIGHT UNDER THE CROSSBAR!!

1-1
mdj12784 12-29-2006, 08:10 PM Gomez Learns To Score Again!!! Haleluja!
Amen!
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:12 PM Devils end the period 1-1. Over 15 shots on Kolzig, if it wasn't for him, the Devils would have more than one goal. If the Devils keep up this effort, they'll be in business. The business of winning hockey games. And let me tell you, business may be about to be picking up soon; business could be booming; and business could be good. Very good.
Ovechkin says: "We'll try to score goals" You keep trying, guy.
Devil Dancer 12-29-2006, 08:14 PM Question though for the Caps fans, is Donald Brashear really "hulking?"
"Hulking?" Nah. I think if AO worked out a bit he could be much bigger than Brash, but Brash can throw 'em. He destroyed someone two nights ago.

Start of the 2nd. Lets go Devils!!!
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:31 PM One hell of a rebound given up by Kolzig, fortunately Nycholat blocked a sure goal.
Oduya is sitting 2 minutes for...uh...what's the call? Throwing a broken stick in the direction of a player to obstruct him? Anyone?

Didn't you know, they make the rules up as they go.:sarcasm: Just a dumb call.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:37 PM Martin is sitting 2 minutes for holding? NO! Danius Zubrus is sitting 2 minutes for holding. It could have gone both ways, time for a Devils PP.
mdj12784 12-29-2006, 08:38 PM Saaaaaaaaaarg!!! No way do we ever trade this man!
haakon84 12-29-2006, 08:38 PM This power play unit looks really good. I love Zajac and Parise's poise.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:39 PM Sarge on the rebound on the PP! Puts the Devils up 2-1. Good work on the 2nd unit for moving the puck, especially Rafalski who got his slap shot on net and hard enough to get the rebound!
WOW! The replay shows Brylin deflection the Rafalski shot and Brylin put in the rebound on that shot! Sarge is on fire!
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:42 PM The Devils are really swarming now, Gionta gets close to putting home yet another Kolzig rebound. NHL.com's scoresheet has the Devils with 22 shots so far. 22!!! And it's not even halfway through the second period!
crashlanding 12-29-2006, 08:42 PM This camera guy is terrible. Whenever a team gains the zone he zooms out so we can see half the crowd and the neutral zone.
crashlanding 12-29-2006, 08:45 PM That call sucked, Lukowich did nothing with his free hand, he was just trying to body Ovechkin to the outside and he made one sweep with his stick hand.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:47 PM Well, Ovechkin drew the call like a veteran. All the same, the Devils' PK unit is out there doing their thing and dominating the Caps' PP units. Ovechkin is most definitely being contained so far.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:52 PM Gionta shoots and Gomez puts home the rebound! Or was it a Capital defenseman? Told you that putting on the pressure would lead to goals!
3-1 anyway!
Yes, the goal counts and Janssen and Brashear are talking but no fighting.
DevFan-RU- 12-29-2006, 08:53 PM GOMEZ!!!! MY GOD! I SEE THE LIGHT (the red one)!!!
TaiMaiShu 12-29-2006, 08:53 PM Very good shot by Gionta!
DevFan-RU- 12-29-2006, 08:56 PM You know... this is the perfect game to set up CamJan for a goal...
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 08:59 PM Well, Johnny Oduya gets caught hooking a Cap, so he'll sit for 2.
Good save by Brodeur earlier to prevent a comeback. Time for the Devils PK to continue their usurpation of any PP hope for the Caps.
DevFan-RU- 12-29-2006, 08:59 PM I see Julien's little strategy... he is going to keep the top 6 forwards as fresh as possible...
Mainly for the Isles game tommorow.
DevFan-RU- 12-29-2006, 09:01 PM Damn.
Devilsfanatic 12-29-2006, 09:01 PM 3-2
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:01 PM Aaaaaargh. A Nycholat shot is deflected by Brooks Laich (why was he wide open???) for a Caps PP goal.
3-2. Let's not let them back into it any more than you just let them, Devils, please.
DevFan-RU- 12-29-2006, 09:02 PM Put the top 2 lines in again, and let em tear it up.

Brooks Laich looks like.....haha it rhymes!
TaiMaiShu 12-29-2006, 09:08 PM I think the puck hit Alex Brooks.
Devilsfanatic 12-29-2006, 09:12 PM Wow... When asked who the best foward in the game is(Asked twice, after people thought he was kidding.) AO: "I am." Did he turn into Ivan Drago? Whats next, telling Brodeur.... "i must score on you.":shakehead
He was kiddin, geez.
TaiMaiShu 12-29-2006, 09:15 PM I found it pretty funny how they randomly asked AO about Brylin just because they are countreymen. AO studdered and said something like he's one of the best. AO's great.
borrachon 12-29-2006, 09:27 PM Last week before HNIC AO was asked who he would choose as rookie of the year for last season if he had a vote. He said "If not Ovechkin, then.....Ovechkin." I love his attitude because he backs it up. (but hopefully not tonight)
Jamie1 12-29-2006, 09:27 PM haha forget the visor fear the vezina.
Devilsfanatic 12-29-2006, 09:28 PM Someone should tell Chico that Backstrom who was drafted last year by the Caps is that play making centreman they've already got him.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:31 PM Someone should tell Chico that Backstrom who was drafted last year by the Caps is that play making centreman they've already got him.
I don't see any "Backstrom" on the ice for the Caps. He's projected to be that play making center, but until he makes it to the NHL; he's not a guaranteed anything yet.

Chico said, whether it be through FA, or drafting, so they have him in the organization that's what I mean.
Patty 4-2
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:32 PM Elias puts home a Gomez feed for the 4th goal of the night!
Fear the Visor? FEAR THE EGG.
4-2 NJ!
TaiMaiShu 12-29-2006, 09:32 PM What a beauuutyy Gomer's on fire!
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:39 PM Jim Dowd gets caught slashing, so he'll sit for 2 minutes. Come on Devils PK, keep the puck out and most definitely away from the hot hand - Mr. Nycholat (yeah, I'm not being silly).
PK UPDATE: The Trademark Martin Brodeur Robbery Save has just stymied #28 of the Caps on the PP. You know he's good for at least one of those a night.
Devilsfanatic 12-29-2006, 09:41 PM Nycholat another player who scores his first NHL goal against Brodeur, seriously.....he probably has allowed the most first NHL goals in NHL history. Every game I hear of a new player, it's Marty they score on. Fortunately, most of the time their first NHL goal is insignificant because they lost to New Jersey anyways because Marty usually gives up 1 or 2.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:45 PM Brodeur just robbed Semin and Zubrus after the penalty, and just stopped Semin on a wraparound (and 2 ensuring loose pucks). If only they had visors... :)
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:48 PM The Capitals will now get to sit someone for a penalty. Boyd Gordon hooks down a Devil, so the Devils get a PP with a chance to ice this game. 4 forwards and a d-man, DON'T GIVE UP A SHORTY GUYS.
PP UPDATE: Oduya has a blast that hits the post! So close, but so far. No goal on the PP, 4 minutes left to play.

Why would they put out 4 forwards at this point of the game? :dunno:
Captain Lou 12-29-2006, 09:50 PM There were no fewer than 3 interference non-calls on the Caps right there.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:53 PM Why would they put out 4 forwards at this point of the game? :dunno:
Easy: to get a 5th goal on the power play, keep the Capitals honest during the power play, and to stay agressive and remain non-complacent on the ice.
The net is EMPTY for the Capitals, with 1:33 left to play. 6 skaters for the Caps, as they take a timeout. Come on Devils, get the empty net to ice this one.
Captain Lou 12-29-2006, 09:53 PM Elias is +3 tonight. He is danger of becoming a plus player soon!
In all seriousness, he has been phenomenal this month.
Devilsfanatic 12-29-2006, 09:55 PM uh oh, we need that 5th more than anything now.
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:55 PM Chris Clark deflects a shot to get a goal with less than a minute to play.
4-3. Why am I suddenly worried?
Captain Lou 12-29-2006, 09:55 PM Where were the defensemen on that goal?
Devilsfanatic 12-29-2006, 09:56 PM PHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Devils win, Devils win, Devils win! Bring out the salami and cheese mama!
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 09:56 PM That was one hell of a last 20 seconds, good on Marty to smother it as time ran out.
The Devils win 4-3. Visors don't win games, guys. BRING ON THE ISLANDERS~!

I just acquired him in my pool too. Hartnell and Staal for Elias and Langenbrunner.

Unthinkable 12-29-2006, 10:01 PM Where were the defensemen on that goal?
Paul Martin failed to clear the puck out of his own end. Gave it away directly to the Caps resulting in the goal. I don't trust him with these kind of minutes in the postseason.
Captain Lou 12-29-2006, 10:02 PM I just acquired him in my pool too. Hartnell and Staal for Elias and Langenbrunner.
I've had him all year. Boy did he suck the first 2 months. It is no wonder that the Devils are finding goals much easier lately. Now he is playing like he should. I mean he has 20 points this month and there is still another game to go.

That's my boy! :sarcasm:
Brooklyndevil 12-29-2006, 10:04 PM Gomer looks like he's ready to have his usual mid-season break-out. Two points against a team they should beat, especially going to the Island against a teams they never seem to beat.

The Rangers haven't scored a goal in a week! The meltdown at Madison Square will soon be upon us!
DevilFisch 12-29-2006, 10:07 PM The Rangers haven't scored a goal in a week! The meltdown at Madison Square will soon be upon us!
I hope they can make that meltdown last another 5 days, so they can't score against Marty either. :)

Kind of worries me too. Hate playing teams on long losing streaks. I'm rooting for them to beat the Caps tomorrow night.

Yeah, I almost acquired him earlier, but then I rejected the trade, and I jumped at the deal today, because Staal is nowhere near what he did last year and Elias is close to the PPG plateau again I think.

Was it just a crazy dream or did our top line actually score three 5-on-5 goals in a single game? Wait, the EGG line was a combined +8, Gomer finally remembers where the back of the net is and Paul "pucks are scary up close" Martin had two assists? Damn, it must of been a dream... :amazed:
If this team manages to find a way to avoid getting their *** kicked in LI and come away with two points tomorrow, there is a Santa Claus and he actively responds to hockey-related requests. :xcheers:

Oh don't worry, Martin still found ways to be a **** up.
DevilsFan38 12-29-2006, 11:26 PM All right, sounds like it was a good win by the Devils. The Caps are good at making things interesting late in the game, luckily the Devils held on for the win.

They did this last year also in a game against the devils at the meadowlands, made it 4-3 late in the game, Grant Marshall had the GWG that night.
Martin played decently, I suppose, but he did not stand out for any good reasons. Brooks was out there less than Janssen seemingly. Brasher and the Caps 4th line tried to goad Janssen and Rupp into fighting after the fourth goal, but they wisely kept the gloves on. One thing that annoyed me was that when there was a scrum in front of the net, the linesman immediately bearhugged Janssen and wouldn't let him go, effectively making it 5-4 in front of Brodeur.
The Oduya penalty was the right call. He was playing with two sticks, and according to Rule 67(f), that's 2 minute for interference.
MissionHockey 12-30-2006, 12:27 AM Elias is +3 tonight. He is danger of becoming a plus player soon!
In all seriousness, he has been phenomenal this month.
Does anyone else remember the year Scott Stevens was a -13 or so? I believe it was 2001-2002. By the end of the year he was well into the plus category.
DevFan-RU- 12-30-2006, 12:37 AM Is it me, or did the Devils just flat out play conservative tonight just to save energy for tommorow's game versus the Isles?
We shoulda killed these guys, but I guess we saved our go-juice for tommorow...
The Rags are to be worrisome. This losing streak will not last, and they can be a dangerous team. Never take them lightly.

I don't think so, I think the Rangers are falling apart and things are going to get worse before they get better. They're defense is just not very good, but their goaltending masked that last year. With Lundqvist struggling a little more it seems, they're flaws are much more glaring.
crashlanding 12-30-2006, 02:21 AM Oh don't worry, Martin still found ways to be a **** up.
Martin was still pretty far from solid, but I have to say he IS improving. He was actually able to carry the puck up the ice a few times tonight. Once he crossed the blueline he was completely lost, but he used to look lost whenever the puck was within five feet of him.
Janssen probably didn't want to fight because of his shoulder. I think he's still trying to make sure it's 100%, especially before jumping in with someone of Brashear's caliber.
The game was close but EG is looking good (still wish Gionta would show me more) and Parise is playing awesome. He looks so confident with the puck on the PP. Someone just needs to teach that line how to convert cycling into scoring.

There was no real reason to fight because it could have given the other team a confidence boost. If it was a one goal game and they were attacking pretty hard I think he would have but there wasn't really a reason to at the time. He threw a few good checks so I don't think his shoulder is bothering him.

Gionta did get an assist on the 2nd Gomez goal. I'm glad Janssen didn't fight because he would almost surely lose. PZL line really works hard along the boards. Sometimes I wonder how much abuse Zach can take, but somehow he manages to hold his own.

Eh he probably would have had a green light. It's not often that he has the chance to throw down with one of the NHL's best. I'm sure it's something he's wanted to do for a while. Kind of like how he and McGrattan usually find each other.

Gionta just isn't anywhere near as effective as he was last year. He's in a pretty bad slump, I just hope he breaks out of it by the time the playoffs roll around.

Yeah I think they were talking earlier (janssen and brashear) and Doc I belive it was said Janssen said he didn't want to go this was when it was 3-1 I think.

I remember that, it was on the ensuing faceoff. But I still think that was a way of Doc being able to turn a wimpy excuse or point of weakness "his shoulder isn't 100%" into a positive "he smartly doesn't want to fight"
