Should be really interesting. Gistedt will likely be the goalkeeper today, he should be busy, considering where playing Canada.

Be nice. I am hoping Price is the starter as well, however, the main thing is for Canada to win the tournament.

I wonder what the staff in Team Sweden was thinking when they planned to play Canada in the last warm up game before the tournament. Sweden has a hard time enough beating Canada in a regular game and I doubt it'll get much easier by showing our hand 4 days before crunch time.

But of course, both teams could choose to lay low and just play through this game. Which is also bad for Sweden since they need to get the team together and you need to play real games to do that. But on the bright side that'll probably minimize the risk of injuries.

I completely agree, i do not feel very good about that game, but i think it will be a close one. They are not gonna steam roll sweden.

Alot of the swedish shots must be pretty weak I think. Swedish teams have a habit of shooting alot while having a pretty bad scoring percentage on those shots. Last years fiasco QF game versus Finland is one of the worst examples of that that I can think of.

Oh and it's pretty silly to expect Bergfors and Bäckström to tear it up. They are too well known and every team will be checking hard on those guys. And unfortunatly, we're not facing Japan in this tournament (like Forsberg and Näslund did..) so there will be no stats padding.

Talked to two people that were at the game. For Sweden, Joel Gistedt, Patrik Berglund (named player of the game) and Fredrik Pettersson were the best ones. Bäckström-Bergfors were kind of quiet.

For Canada, Sam Gagner was really noticeable. The game was pretty physical and tight, but not overly entertaining.

Just came home from the game. It was a pretty fair win for Sweden. Both teams were just as good but I think Sweden showed more heart troughout the game, therefore they deserve the win. Altough a draw wouldn't have been unfair at all.

Some thoughts of the game...

Canada:
You can clearly see that Canada is the more overall talanted of the two teams. They are better at fast and accurate decisionmaking in situations under pressure. They are also playing the game in a higher pace than Sweden, although Sweden had the players to keep up with them this game. I also liked the usual Canadian aggressiveness but were a little disappointed with their physical game overall.
Best players were Toews, Letang, Gagner and Neal who had very nice forechecking throughout the game. Irving was OK in goal, not more.

Sweden:
The Swedish team hasn't got the overall high talent level, like Canada. Bäckström is easily the most gifted player on the ice and his hands, vision and first steps with the puck is unmatched. Unfortunately Bergfors looked a bit off today and they didn't score. But their line will be a deadly weapon this tournament. It was nice to see that we also have some 2nd hand scoring in other players. Patrik Berglund had some trouble with the pace of the game in the beginning. But he grew into it throughout the game. He had some nice individual efforts and he actually has some of the gamewinning instincts and qualities of Sundin, not just the frame. His goal was quite a beauty when the broke into offensive zone with two defenders on him. But he shaked them off and after a nice move shot a slapper past Irving. Fredrik Pettersson is another other player we can expect some scoring from. He has all the tools to become a 3rd-line NHL winger like P.J Axelsson, maybe with better scoring touch. He NEVER stops skating and has enough skill to be a dangerous scorer on this level.
Then we have some players that can have a hard time this tournament. Bendelin has picked some players with a big heart and good working ethics. But unfortunately their skill level is just not enough for WJC, at least not against the better nations. Thuresson, Omark, Martin Johansson and Isaksson is such players. Their legs are really working but the hands and mind don't really keeps up with them.
The defense was overall good. Rahimi showed that he's going to be really valuable against nations as Canada and USA. He was a man amongst boys when it came to physical play, the Canadian players looked like little schoolboys compared to him. He's still quite raw but he could really end up like a good 3rd pairing physical stay-at-home defenseman.
Gistedt was solid and made some pretty nice saves. Looked nervous in the beginning and that worries me a bit. I'd rather go with Enroth who never seems to have any problems with his confidence.
Coaching good.

They were both solid. Hellström was a bit better and was the best defensive presence in Sweden with Rahimi. Junland was OK but was sometimes a little slow with his decisionmaking. But I think he just wasn't used to the fast pace of the game. But he was OK.

I know I'm in the small minority but I love Steve Downie. If you play against him you have no idea what he's going to do. As long as he doesn't ruin Canada's chances for gold, keep doing what you have been doing Steve.

He's pretty much like Darcy Tucker and other pain-in-the-as-players; you hate him when he is the other side of the rink, but have great respect for him when he is on your side.

With the exception of some of the guys Downie played with in Windsor, of course.

Attended at the game yesterday.

This Canada team isn't very flashy. Obviously they still have some very talented offensive players, but neither of them stood out in this game. One shouldn't draw too many conclusions from only one game, and specially not from a exhibition game, but through the game I was wondering which players who are supposed to be the go-to-guys in close games like this. Canada may need one or two big and strong goalscoring wingers (like Latendress or Blunden) to win the tournament. This was especially notabe on the pp (which still was way better then the swedish pp), where they have playmakers like Little and Cogliano, but lacking finishers. The defense looked (atleast the first half of the game) better. Sweden didn't manage to generete much offense, having a hard time getting through the neutral zone, which usually resulted in one man rushes and some useless dumpins. As for Sweden, they played a strong game after a sloppy first period. Was impressed that they were able to bounce back and put good pressure in the second period. In the third, I was even more impressed with the way they defended the early lead. Canada didn't have a lot of scoring chances to tie the game. Sweden stood up good physically, which was nice to see. Kind of expected, but it felt like Canada won all face-offs.

Thoughts about some players:

Downie, as pointed out, played dirty with his stick on sveral occasions. Talked/complained a lot. One thing you must like though is how much he seemes to hate to loose...

One forward who impressed me was Neal. Looked like a strong powerforward who should belong on the pp.

Berglund's (named the best swedish player of the game) game winning goal was a beauty. Other then that, I thought he looked slow, and a bit uninterested. Took two bad penalties.

Like Canada, Irving played a strong game for the first half. After the first swedish goal, a own goal by a defensmen, he looked a bit shaky. The second goal may have been deflected by a canadian. He also let a goal in which he though he had his glove on. Referee, wrongly, waved the goal of as he also thought Irving blocked the shot. I think Price will start the first game.

Bäckstöm was easily the most skilled player on the ice. Some nice Forsberg-passes.

Bergfors: Invisible (which is understandeble). Will be better.

Russell, Bourdon and Letang were all solid and creative.

Gistedt looked calm and solid. Came up with a couple of good glove saves late in the game. Strange, he isn't drafted.

Rahimi is and will be a fan favourite as he is a player that gives you anything he has and always makes the simple play. Looked very strong and big. Was in front of the net on the Swedish pp! Also, seemes to have good leadership qualities which made me think of Mattias Norström.

How did O'Marra look?
I still remember that huge hit he laid out a Czech player with during the last WJC pre-games. Man, that was awesome. A bit of a charge though, but still. Wow.

Not really, Price played fine in his game and Irvin was doing great but had 2 own goals scored on his in this game, thats probably not gonna happen every game.

Your right. Talented but a very big idiot. I can't wait for that day but I have been waiting for that day for Avery too and I wouldn't be surprised if Downie turtles in the NHL as much as Sean does

Then you don't have a clue who Steve Downie is. He doesn't know when to shut his mouth, he can't control his behaviour very well, but the one thing he doesn't do is turtle.
