ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has recalled defenseman Kent Huskins from the Portland Pirates, Anaheim’s primary affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Huskins, 27 (5/4/79), has collected 2-9=11 points with 10 penalty minutes (PIM) and a +5 rating in 27 games with Portland this season. In 2005-06, the 6-3, 215-pound defenseman was the only Pirate to play in all of the team’s 80 games. Huskins set professional career single-season highs in goals, assists and points with 8-23=31 points.

Huskins signed as a free agent on August 22, 2005. He was originally drafted by Chicago in sixth round (156th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

I didn't hear about any injuries so I'm assuming this is pre-caution just in case someone does get hurt during the trade freeze.

That makes sense but doesn't it give us 24 guys on the roster? I don't remember Bryz being placed on IR.

Per the Duck guy on Eklund's site (http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=4391):

They didn't want to risk infection from wearing a skate boot.

Huskins is a stay-at-home defenseman....he isn't flashy and won't give you many points...He is sound positionally and doesn't commit too many mistakes. Most likely he was recalled because he's safe....

His only offensive power is a hard shot from the point.

Huskins is solid for a reserve. Much like DiPenta, I look forward to seeing what he can do. It sucks though that it had to take an injury to have someone called up. I mean we've been without a d-man reserve for almost two months.

Didnt Burke sign Ian Moran for this exact purpose? Wasnt he this great locker room guy?

Moran is a good locker room guy, but his game is so bad now that he can't even be a number 7 d-man in the NHL.

Huskins/Rome/St.Jacques >> Moran

That's not why he wasn't recalled....he's actually been pretty good in Portland......very solid and doesn't give up many chances.

The reason why he wasn't recalled because of re-entry waivers....Ducks are sensitive to that right now.

Perhaps, but I do know Burke/Carlyle and the rest of the organization were not too impressed with Moran earlier this season.

Huskins is a great guy!!! having watch him for the last few months, he totally impresses me. He may not be a goal scorer, but he can set up those around him. He also treats the fans with respect and the Pirates fan really appreciated that. I stand in the corner during the Pirates warm up and it's pretty quiet without the Huskie cheer.
