At last, revenue that will go entirely to the Devils and not the NJ Sports & Exposition Authority.

But for us, it'll always be THE ROCK. (Built-in nickname, for the win!)

Yep. That is so cool sounding too. Not cheesy like the "Can" in Denver etc. Geez, that's $5 million in revenue that the team wouldn't even be geting if they stayed at the CAA. Now maybee they can hire some aggressive marketin people!

Ye-ha! I can't wait.

Yep. Thank god it wasn't something stupid like Bed Bath & Beyond Center, or Chili's Arena or something really corporate sounding. Yes Prudential is a company but at least the Rock of Gibraltar logo is eartlhy, conservative and evokes strength & wisdom. Man I like this name even better now!

Interesting. Prudential was founded in Newark itself, and its central offices are like a block away from the Arena site.

"The Rock" would be a fitting nickname of the Arena...

I bet if us fans make a big enough deal, Prudential may try and market the arena with its name and the "rock".

I was hoping that it would retain a non-corporate name. Just seems classier that way. However, it IS 5mil a year that goes to the Devils, and "The Rock" isn't a bad nickname at all for an arena. Now if the Devils can market it correctly, hopefully the attendance problems will be a thing of the past.

The team and we fans could have done a whole lot worse than Prudential Center. The company has strong ties to the Newark and New Jersey. I would prefer Prudential Arena over Prudential Center, but the Prudential pretty good. It is also a strong company, which is good, so the name won't be changed in a couple years like the arenas named after banks.

Just as long as people fill the joint, I couldn't care what they call it. But the more money the Devils make is a good thing for us Devil fans because a strong financial organizations means that they will stay put. But I also must agree that the "Rock" is a pretty cool name.

I like "The Rock" as a nickname. Somehow I'm thinking "We Will Rock You" will become part of the new play list there. ;)

And honestly - I don't care if they say Nynex presents the New Jersey Devils when they come out on the ice - just keep my season ticket prices down dam it.

Prepare to be dissapointed, I'm pretty sure Newark is not a swamp.

Also, I fully support any and all Queen songs to be played at The Rock.

Devil's Rock is cool too. But the Prudential logo is the Rock of Gibralter, if I'm not mistaken. Calling the new arena the Gibralter is kind of lame; so just The Rock would be appropriate. I should know since I chimed in first with the name.

Well, why can't we play with the name? The Sharks play at the HP Pavilion, but they call it the Shark Tank. Why can't we mess around with the name? The Rock part still directly ties in with Prudential which is more than San Jose does. The Devil's Rock would just make it more our arena--- something CAA never truly was.

i like the devs site, and no, CAA is better than brendan byrne arena (sp?). i am a fan on theme named arenas though. mellon arena gets called the igloo more than mellon and remember the pond. i can deal with the rock, any other nickname wouldnt be too pc for the devils. taking the kids to "hell" or "purgatory" etc. the rock will have to do.

the devil with the mustache is the best mascot in the league.

my two favorite moments, pointing at a fan wearing a ranger jersey during last years playoffs, shaking his head, then lifting his (the devil mascot) jersey to stroke his six pack abs. really who makes a mascot uniform with six pack abs.

last home game vs ottawa, pour some sugar on me was playing during a stoppage, and he is dancing, grabs some guys popcorn, pours it all over himslef and rubs it in.

gotta love it.

Vanderbeek was on the intermission report a couple of games ago. He said that it wasn't "official" at the time, but he hoped they'd make an announcement this week.

This is the announcement, TSN just waited for the official word.

Is anyone else kinda happy the Devils will have the building to themselves?

Especially since the Nets are staying at CAA or going to Brooklyn?

I know the Nets would bring additional revenue... but... for now, itll be the Devils home only.

In a previous newspaper article, Vanderbeek said the thing that makes this arena different from others is that if you lease a luxury box, it includes being able to attend ALL/ANY events held at the arena, be it Devils hockey, college basketball, circus, concerts, ice shows, etc. Having the Nets playing there would make it more attractive & lucrative for potential suite leasees. It would also be better for Newark as it would give the arena and local business 41 more home dates plus playoffs. Losing the Nets will be a major loss, but despite all the hype over the approval of the Brooklyn Arena, there has yet to be a groundbreaking.

I'm excited because it was designed specifically for hockey and since it won't be overused there is a very good possibility that it will have the best ice in the league.

This sounds great. I like the tone of Prudential Center, at least it's better then the long name of Continental Airlines Arena.

I watched that talk during the intermission with Vanderbeek and that 3d footage of the arena looks great. I can't wait to get inside it!

Well, its an Arena that has the capacity for dual use. The Nets have been invited... but they didnt RSVP yet. We're still waiting on Brooklyn plan to fail miserably.

I'm sure Newark will house several college basketball teams as well, but getting the Nets to stay would be huge for New Jersey.

Vanderbeek has been absolutely incredible in the short time he has been the Devils owner.

I don't think we as Devils fans fully understand the magnitude of the moves to stabilize the Devils organization in New Jersey that have taken place in the last 2+ years.

I agree 100%.

It's funny, I was just thinking about that this morning. We give Lou and Marty so much praise (and deservedly so) but Vanderbeek also deserves plenty of love. For buying the team, having the main goal be success and not the bottom line, whatever it takes, and doing so much to get the new arena.

Honestly, I don't think we could've asked for a better owner than Vanderbeek. He's taken a hands-off approach and let Lou run the show and has given him the freedom to do whatever it takes to win. Not sure how other owners of non-big market teams might have reacted when Lou decided to send Almo and McGillis down to Albany last year, but Vanderbeek didn't seem to mind much since his goal has always been to just win.

As for the arena, he was able to get a deal done when the two previous ownership groups couldn't. Not only that, but he made sure to make it a world class arena. I always though that when/if the Devils did finally get a new arena, it would be on the cheaper side since they're not exactly raking in the money, but Vanderbeek seems determined to make this the best arena in the area, if not the entire league. If I'm not mistaken, the arena is going to go over budget by about $80MM or so (all of which will be covered by the Devils), but seems like he's willing to pay it rather than cut back on the project.

Just look at what Nets fans have to deal with - an owner that cares little about the sport, let along the team, and came in and cut back salary right away. He's gotten a bit better since then, but we're really lucky to have someone like Vanderbeek instead.

He's not just the Hair Club for Men President, he's also a client. Or something like that. Meaning, he's not just the Devil's owner, he's also a fan.
