Muttley 12-20-2006, 02:07 AM You can make a case for larger nets as a result of goalie equipment getting larger over time, but that has since been supposedly regulated. Right? They've brought up this idea several times in the past, but now Colin Cambell & Bettman are freaking out over a slight drop in scoring and are bringing it up to the forefront again.

Unthinkable 12-20-2006, 02:35 AM Goaltenders and D have sacrificed enough over the last season and a half. Too much tinkering going on everytime I read suggestions like this to allegedly make the game better.
Easton 12-20-2006, 02:38 AM Jesus chirst, man. And if this doesn't work then they'll decide to make the rinks bigger (which I wouldn't mind as much).

Drop in scoring???
Some of last night's scores:
Calgary 5
Los Angeles 3
Colorado 7
Edmonton 6
Vancouver 2
Minnesota 5
Boston 7
Ottawa 2
Florida 7
Toronto 3
Montreal 5
Buffalo 2
Tampa Bay 5
Washington 4
....
The only game with less than 3 goals was the Carolina-Philly game. Where are they getting that teams are scoring less. If they keep calling the amount of penalties that they are now doing (minus the missed called on the slash to Langenbrunner), there will more and more goals, not less.
GentlemanOfLeisure 12-20-2006, 11:27 AM The NHL is the most porely run sport in the entire world. I've never seen a sport get progressivly bad as the years have gone on.
Wait till you guys get a load of the new "STREAMLINED" uniforms. They, from what i've been told from an insider that works in the NHL offices in NYC, are going to be embarrasingly bad.

at this point, i dont think you can expect much. If you get numb enough before hand, the sting of reality is that much less intense
make the nets larger, the puck smaller, and make circles in which the D is only allowed to play the puck, if they go outside of it and touch it, it is delay of game. also allow powerplays to go lower than 3 men, if 5 penalties are called for the new delay of game penalty, make it a 5 on 0 powerplay.
you would think the people who run the game would know that this game has been around for a long time and doesnt need to be changed every season. think its hard to draw fans now, change the rules every year and see how many stick around.

The NHL made the fans eat so many changes after the lock-out, some good (no two line pass) and some bad (the friggin trapezoid) that it appeared the league was overwhelmed with desperation.
The lack of respect for their own game -- a game that for the most part was not damaged or inferior in any way (aside from marketing) -- is disturbing. There is such a thing as tradition in sports, and those entrusted to protect any sport need to honor and protect those traditions, and the sanctity of the records and benchmarks established in the history of the sport, or it will end up mutilated beyond recognition in the eyes of the fans. And the current game will start to become a circus -- a complete joke.
Look at the goofy rules attempted by the XFL, in an effort to "update" the game of football. And how long did that last? What did real football fans think of that travesty? They thought it was retarded and stayed away in droves.
Baseball is dealing with a very real PR problem with the "steroid era" players now coming up for inclusion in the HOF, and the sacrosanct records they have been obliterating being seriously called in to question. Despite 586 homers (or whatever), and "saving baseball" in 1998 with 70hrs, Big Mac isn't going to see the HOF this year or perhaps any, because of the perception he competed with an unbalanced advantage (despite no rules saying he couldn't until after he retired). Fans, critics and baseball itself is being torn up over this.
But there is hockey, in all of it's lack of self esteem, blithely considering making the nets bigger, in an effort to up the goal tally regardless of the rules all the record holders played under to set their records over the last 100 plus years of hockey. I, for one, am horrrified.
The Omen* 12-20-2006, 03:17 PM Bigger nets and tampons for the players. Checking or any other type of physical activity will be a penalty. Soon we will have 3-3 hockey.

I think that is field hockey.
Sandmachine 12-20-2006, 03:50 PM Holy crap, when will it end...
This just seems like a complete disregard for the knowledgeable and long-time hockey fan. It's an insult to our intelligence to think that we the fans will simply become overjoyed at the thought of seeing more slapshots enter the net from the wing. Why should I find this impressive? It decreases the work/skill required to achieve a goal, and any current hockey fan would realize that. They appeal to lowest common denomitor, the fan who doesn't really know much about hockey or its traditions but gets a rise out of just seeing a puck enter a net and getting to participate in the cheering after a goal. It's so superficial what they're trying to do to "improve the game"...and yet they're succeeding in eroding the longstanding traditions, institutions, and fabric of the game.
"We have to experiment (with bigger nets) to see if we can get that puck in off the wing, that Guy Lafleur, Mike Bossy, Mike Gartner shot," said Campbell. "Players are so good now at blocking shots and getting in the way of shots. You just can't get one through. Goalies are bigger and better."
Obviously they're more likely to go in, you idiot.....is that the whole of the argument? Pathetic....
I strongly agree with Turco when he says: "We have to relax a little bit, let this game grow and not screw it up." Historically, in most sports, I don't think there's ever been a quick fix that has resulted in many more fans in the seats right away, so I think they should stop messing with everything and let it be. Else, the NHL will lose its identity which is steeped in tradition, and rightly so, I think.

they keep trying to put tape on a sinking ship. A plant does not grow instantly nor does the ugly duckling become a swan overnight. This is silly, Run your mouth Marty, you know hes gonna speak up and hes the goalie rep of GB's round table.
Brooklyndevil 12-20-2006, 04:56 PM How I linger for the days when I used to watch a hockey game and a basketball game broke out. Seriously, it's a sad day when you can honestly say that the NBA play's rougher than the NHL.

That's exactly what I was thinking as well. Hockey is complicated as it is, why throw in all these ridiculous rules and changes? Bettman and his boys are completely controlling the league. Fans and players have little or no say at all.
DevilFisch 12-20-2006, 10:36 PM I'll start freaking about all these changes once they actually take place. It's still in the "idea" stage and as the original article mentions, the NHL GMs and the Competition Committee would have to agree to this idea.
Freaking about this now is, well, just freaking out for the sake of freaking out; and I'd rather save my supply of Super Freak Out(tm).
