Brodeur: HART MVP?

I know it's early, but we're approaching the mid-point in the season and Marty should be in serious consideration for the Hart Trophy. I know he only cares about one piece of hardware, but it's the only remaining award he has yet to win.

The top 3 goalies in wins, shots faces, save %, GAA, shutous etc. are Brodeur, Kiprusoff, Giguere & Turco. I would put Marty & Kiprusoff a little higher because their respective teams have struggled on offense and their is little margin for error.

I would give Marty the edge because he faces the high scoring Eastern Conference night after night.

Can anyone make a case for any other player in the running to win this award?

He definately deserves a serious look Doc.. It's crazy how many games he's won or kept us in...

I think Crosby can make a push for the award if the Pens make the playoffs too. He's havin a great year and is takin over some games

I know, he'll probably be the fan favorite, especially when this team is trying to promote its up & coming stars. He does have Malking, Recchi & Gonchar plus an underacheiving #1 pick goalie, but I think he's so flashy that he would win out over any goalie. Too bad.

Depends which teams make the playoffs. I doubt Brodeur will get much of a push outside of NJ homers.

I think he definitely deserves a nomination. He has saved the Devils' bacon so far this year.

Pittsburgh makes the playoffs = Hart for Crosby

Unless for some reason he falls off the tracks and doesn't reach 100 pts.

Calgary has struggled offensively? That's news to me.

I would think Brodeur has to be in the top 3 in Hart consideration so far. He's been tremendous for the Devils. Even his usually "lower" save % is .921% this year.

I think a lot of journalists (who are the ones that actually decide who wins) are always going to view Brodeur as benefitting from playing on a "defensive team". While this argument was more valid in earlier days when the blue-line boasted Stevens, Niedermayer and the rest, it's ridiculous to overlook the fact that #30 is the reason the Devils are a defensive team.

I doubt Brodeur will get the Vezina let alone the Hart. Not based on his play, but based on who votes for the trophy.

Yes, check your stats. We have played 2 more games than them, but they have only scored 5 more goals than we have.

Devils 32 GP 83 goals
Calgary 30 GP 88 goals

Good point, kind of like last year with Thorton in San Jose. He had a good supporting cast with him but they did go on a tear when he got there from Boston.

Crosby did breal the 100 point barrier last year and the Pens still failed to qualify for the playoffs. The only way he doesn't get it is if Malkin is not that far behind in goals, as they are both tied right now with 16.

The goal that signifies a shootout win does not and should not count in "goals for" stats. The Devils have scored 2.47 goals per game while the Flames have scored 2.93... quite a difference.

If Marty keeps up this form he'll have a slight shot. But I think Vezina would be more likely.

I think Sid the kid will eventually run up too many points for Marty to even be considered.

Forget 100 points. He's on pace for more than 140, and I wouldn't be shocked if he put up 150.

So, they're ranked 16th out of 30. lol, that's not exactly lighting it up compared to the rest of the league.

Even adjusting the Devils GF (exluding the 4 SO wins), it comes to 79 goals scored in regulation & OT vs. Calgary with 88 during regulation & OT as well. (they have no SO) They sure do have a scoring problem.....kind of like we do.

I could see Giguere winning this over Brodeur, just as he did with the Conn Smythe in 2003 when he beat out Niedermayer and Marty both. Not to say I'd like to see it happen, but there will be a feel good Ducks theme in the media going on for the rest of the season.

I think Pronger and Niedermayer would outweigh any momentum Giguere has for the Hart.

What about Lidstrom or Pronger, or even Niedermayer?

The numbers are there.

True. I can't imagine Detroit or Anaheim being where they are without their respective d-men.

Calgary does not have a scoring problem and even if they did its not nearly as bad as the Devils'. And by the way dude scoring 79 goals in 32 games is horrible compared to scoring 88 goals in 30 games. Those numbers are so far apart its rediculous to compare them.

Hart contenders...

Crosby - Pens NEED to make the playoffs no matter what his stats say.

Nieds, Pronger, Giguere - Even if they get consideration they'll probably split the vote and hurt their respective chances.

Thornton - He won it last year, the second line is really producing for them and they're getting great goaltending, all of which hurts him.

Jagr - Definitely a threat, but Shanahan's emergence on that team could hurt him.

Kolzig - If the Pens make the playoffs he could get some serious consideration, but with Ovechkin scoring a ton now it could make it harder.

Kipper - He's putting up the numbers after a slow start, but Iginla and Tanguay are clicking now so the "his team doesn't score" reason is not much of a factor.

Havlat - Living in Chicago, watching the Hawks, this guy is THE REAL DEAL. The Hawks are battling for a playoff spot, if they get it he will be a finalist. Although if Khabibulin keeps standing on his head it may hurt his chances.

Brodeur - I'm a big-time Devils homer, but if he's ever going to win it, it will be this year. He's the only goaltending contender in the high scoring east (minus Kolzig). He's faced more shots this year than he has in the past. His team is god-awful in scoring. He has only sat out two games. A majority of the games he's played in have been one-goal games so they've been draining. When you remove the first Ottawa game, his numbers are better than ever and they'll continue to get better if he keeps playing the way he has (as the Ottawa game becomes less of a factor). His importance to the team has never been greater than it is this year.

Yep, that's what sets him apart from the others. The Eastern Conference has all the offense this season and as of tonight, Brodeur is 2nd in total shots faced & minutes played (only very slightly behind Luongo). So now people can't use the "but he only faces 12 shots per game" excuse.

I have a feeling that the NHL would prefer it to go to one of their younger stars, like Crosby, Thornton again or Ovechkin. It will be interesting to see.

It seems to be the trend eh.....did you see the recent 50 greatest player(offence only) list they forgot guys liek trottier and francis and put crosby Ao and malkin on there they will be good i just feel their rushing things.....no one wants Daigle part 2 or a strong start(Lindross) into a 3rd line player.

Marty won't win either, sure he is having a great year.

vezina: it is Giggys to lose, 22-4 top five in GAA and save%, I don't see Anahiem going in the tank. (nominnee's kipper and huet)

hart: it is crosby's to lose, I don't think thats gonna happen, he will score over 130 pts. (nominees selanne and jagr)

Hardware aside Marty is having his best year yet. He really literally may have won them close to half the wins they have. I can't believe he's 35 already! This year has really been vindication for him, as it's obvious he's the best in the game.

And the press is saying it more than ever, which has to be a vindication to Marty, the team and the fans. Maybe he does have a shot in being in the top 3 for the Hart.

I heard the Kings announcers call Kipper the best in the world on tonights telecast. Other team announcers have been fawning over Giguere a lot over the last few months.
