Everson: Devs should swap Gomez for Datsyuk

Although it isn't believed to have been seriously discussed, there is at least some recognition that a swap involving those two centers would solve issues for each team.

Ok, first off: MARK EVERSON, are you a HFBoards lurker? If so, cite your sources damnit!

Second, Everson never goes on to say exactly what "issues" the swap would solve let alone how the deal would prove a remedy. If the Devils are going to unload Gomez for something how does an underachieving (this year) center who disappears during the off-season going to make a difference? Your also losing chemistry that has been cooking since 2000 when you let go of Gomez. And for what? Datsyuk is also an UFA come July, so we'd still have that mess to deal with.

While I believe Pavel Datsyuk is one of the most offensively gifted players in the NHL I don't think this deal is in the best interests of the Devils franchise. While Lou Lamoriello has swung deals for players like Datsyuk before the length of #13's present contract puts a diffrent spin on it.

terrible deal for Devils, you keep Gomez in hopes that come this summer he gives the Devils a hometown deal(half a million to a million less then higest offer), Datsyuk on the other hand would just bolt for the highest amount of cash.

What?? Why? This would be the dumbest idea I've heard on these boards in a while, and its not even from a member. Datsyuk would have to learn a whole new system, his teammate would have to become acclimated to a new teammate and try to develop new chemistry and then he would be gone by the summer. Whats the point?

There I said it.

Yeah that as well. One could argue Datsyuk is better then Gomez as a player(although you could make arguements the other way) but the hassles it will bring to the team not worth it.

How would this solve any issues? Datsyuk is more of a money head-case than Gomez is, especially considering the rumors that he turned down a $5M a year extension and is looking for $7M. Morever, he's Mr. Invisible during the playoffs.

No way.

We may actually be able to keep Gomez, if the cap goes up a decent amount. One of us should really do a detailed analysis on how to clear space for a 6m/year Gomez.

I disagree.

Gomez is arguably the best passer in the league, Datsyuk just chokes in the playoffs.

Well, I'm glad this appeared in the Post, because that means it will never happen ;)

Seriously, there's no way Lou would ever do this trade, and for good reasons. Like you've all said, Datsyuk disappears in the playoffs, and for a team whose goal every year is the Cup, that's pretty worthless. Also, it sounds like he wants more than Gomez might, which given his lack of playoff production is ridiculous. And finally, that would probably kill the Devils chances of signing either one of them after the season - Datsyuk because he's looking for more money and Gomez because he might be pissed at the Devils for trading him away.

But like I said, the article was written by Neverson, so we don't have to worry about it.

God, I can't stand the Post and all of its writers not just Brooks and Everson. Did I every tell you guys I once saw a two-page article about a guy who walks around in the middle night killing rats with a baseball bat? It was on page 2, goddamnit.

I've never seen a hockey writer consistently misreport the news about one team more than Everson does the Devils. He's insane just for thinking that Lamoriello would ever acquire a player like Datsyuk. Datsyuk's contract demands and poor performances in the playoffs should probably turn off most other contending teams as well. The guy is an exciting player on the ice, but his contract issues really make him hard to root for. Not the type of headache the Devils would seek out. Score a goal again in the playoffs, then maybe you can demand that kind of money.

I got a peek at Mark Everson's weekly planner. These were the entries:

Monday: Try and find rumors about the Devil's trading Scott Gomez.
Tuesday: Make up my own rumors about the Devil's trading Scott Gomez.
Wednesday: Go to Devils game and watch Scott Gomez's last game as a Devil before he's traded.
Thursday: Call other teams and see if they're interested in trading for Scott Gomez.
Friday: Watch the Ranger game and think how much better Scott Gomez would fit on this team than on the Devils.
Saturday: Write my weekly column about trading Scott Gomez. Submit it for publication for the following week.
Sunday: Wash my Rangers jersey.

Gomez is arguably the best passer in the league

Joe "i almost got 100 assists last year" Thorton and Sidney Crosby might disagree

Gomez is farily underrated in the NHL. Mainly from playing on a Defensive minded team. But he has benefited alot from this.

I have seen that man skate the puck through an entire team and set his own shot up. Set other good shots up for his linemates. But overall, he just makes the other team look stupid alot.

Oh, you mean like what he did to Sandis Ozolinsh & Jason Strudwick of the NYR???

I remember watching that game and JD explained that the Rangers gameplanned against Gomez, to at least cut him off at the goal line. In that case I think it was Petr Sykora's job, but he didnt stick with him and by the time Gomez got the puck he was gone. Scott Gomez is the ultimate trap breaker.

I've seen him go through the entire Flyers team... twice. He took the puck in, shot it, picked up the rebound and took it back in.

He just needs to remember to finish... :)

I am not arguing the fact that Gomez is one of the top passers in the league, just arguing if he is the best passer in the league. That being said he top 5 though for sure.

Well his January 2002 "Gomez for Lecavalier" trade was good.

I think Gomez is going to have a much better 2nd half as he usually does and with him being a UFA at yrs end you know he's looking to improve upon the current pace of 12 goals and 68pts for the year to help secure his multi-yr deal come July.

Well, that IS Strudwick and Ozolinsh after all. I'd expect Gomez to be able to do that against them. But that was an especially blatant defensive breakdown... You got him, no I got him, no you got him...

Re: Gomez for Datsyuk, it'd never happen. The Devils are fine. Lou wouldn't make that trade, nor should he. Gomez has an infinitely better chance of signing a new deal with the Devils than Datsyuk, who will just go to whomever's stupid enough to give him $7 M a year to pull a Houdini and disappear after 82 games.

Great point. When Malkin did the same exact thing to us against Brodeur last month, everybody in the OLN studios were falling over themselves and needed to change their underwear. I like Gomez's goal better though. Malkin did benefit from a really, really nice 2 line pass. (lol, I still think he was offsides though)

Malkin's was A HELL OF A LOT BETTER than Gomez's. I love the Gomez goal, I was there, I erupted with everyone else...but a lot of people overlook the fact that he lost the puck into Ozolinsh's skates and then picked it up again before Sandis could react. Malkin was in complete control the whole time and completely fooled Marty on the shot.

Ugh, why did it have to happen against us? :(

It's probably in the run for best goal of the year.

Nah, control or not, I still like Gomers' better. It's almost end to end. Malkin is expected to do that, and will probably do it much more often than Gomez. Plus he already had a step on the D at the blue line on that play.

I'll stick with the little guy dekeing his way through bigger defensman anyday.:yo:
