Who is a "Devils" type of player?

When we traded for Langenbrunner, it was said that Lou wanted him because he was a "Devils" type of player. It's also been said that Brad Stuart of the Bruins is another "Devils" player. So, what are the qualities that make a Devils type of player, and who is on a different team who would be a Devils player?

Very good defensively, we won't have a player like Kovalchuk who scores a lot but gives up nearly as much. Hard working and gritty, even guys like Brylin and Gionta fit into this despite being on the small side. Versatile, if you are the type of player that needs a certain type of line to be productive it limits what the coaching staff can do and you aren't a "Devils" type of player.

If I had to guess a few on other teams I'd say Brendan Morrow, Brian Rolston (still mad we didn't sign him before last year), and Chris Drury come to mind.

A Devils type of player is most importantly a team first guy. He also should be a hard worker and polished in all three zones.

Easily Drury. If Gomez walks, he's the guy I bring in. He's a playoff performer (like Jamie was and why he was brought in) he kills penalties, he's got a scoring touch and Lou's favourite, he is an all American player.

Drury? I had Andy MacDonald or Alan McCauley (a Devils pick) in mind.

Drury is a perfect candidate. He is great on faceoffs and in his own zone. He's also clutch.

Exactly, and he's american, it's all that matters to Lou.

Yeah, I agree with drury being a Devil's type player..unfortunatly i don't see him leaving Buffalo..Briere would be gone before Drury

Morrow and Drury are the first two that came to my mind too. Lethonen and Draper would also play in the Devil's system well.

The Devils don't seem to take chances with those who have questionable personalities. They parted with Deron Quint after 4 games for presumably the same reasons.

Peca struck me as a good choice, but we already have Madden.

One thing to note is that Broduer is now the oldest Devil, with Madden and Rafalski one year younger.

I think Chris Chelios would have been a perfect Devil back in the day. Solid defensively, and mean in the Stevens mold. Plus he's American, and I believe played college hockey instead of junior.

I don't think Lou really cares if the player is American or not. He's had no problems relying on Canadians like Scott Stevens, Scott Niedermayer, and Martin Brodeur; or Europeans like Sergei Brylin, Tommy Albelin, and Patrik Elias for important roles.

If you, as a player, are willing to play within the team's style, play with heart, and work hard in addition to all that talent; Lou Lamoriello would probably want you on his team.

Actually, I'd go with another Morrow. This one spelled Moreau (as in Ethan :) ), who plays in Edmonton. I've always felt that he had the ethic that would make a good Devils-type of player.

Speaking of Edmonton, I think Jason Smith would be the perfect Devil (again).

I agree, I think the whole 'All-American Lou' angle is a little overplayed. I believe Lou has added respect for those who went through the NCAA over the junior kids with all things being equal but that player could be American (Parise) or Canadian (Zajac).

Not to mention that those were the BPA when our pick came up.

Two guys that have had long careers and have never been Devils --

Scott Mellanby and Keith Carney.

I always expected them to come to their rightful home, but it just never happened.

Two players who I think would have been a good fit on the Devils is Steve Rucchin and on defense Jason Smith. Of all the trades that I wish Lou could take back as the one where they traded Smith to Toronto.

I think Lou tries to acquire players that are a good fit for the Devils, no matter where they are from. But if he had a choice between 2 players where one was American and the other wasn't and they were equal players, he would likely take the American first.

He damn well would, don't know why it matters to him.

I could see NJ getting someone like Scotty Upshall if he doesn't get the break in Nashville he deserves.
