Gio is the simple on-ice nickname used to yell instructions by his teammates, not unlike Whitey, Patty, Pando, Sarge or Gomer. A funny story that I have posted previously involves Gionta wanting to be called "G-Love" by his teammates. He told them to call him that, but they called him "glove" instead. Gomez was called the Mexican Missile in juniors. Either Doc or Chico (great nicknames for our announcers by the way) found that out from Gomer last season.
