Our Power Play

Our power play hasn't been doing too well. Yeah, it goes through ups and downs and it's early, so no worries, just though strategy was worth discussing.

We're really big on cycling and trying to get that big point shot with a possible deflection or screen. The only potential problem I see is that teams are pretty savy to that about us now and know what we are looking for.

Well, as it turns out, that strategy is great for teams without a very structured and role-oriented PK who like to actively pursue the puck and then collapse everyone quickly- we move the puck until they sense danger of being out of position, they collapse, we take the point shot, and it is assisted by the traffic the other team helped create.

Thus far the big way for us to "mix it up" is the "czexican missile" shot from gomez at the circle deflected by Patty in the slot.

What do you guys think we should do to add another dimension to our power play to keep their PK honest?

Did you see how Pittsburgh was ready for that deflection last night?

Elias went right into the slot ... and when he got the deflection ... right into a Penguins defenseman.

I guess they watched some tape.

That's exactly one of the things that prompted me to post this. It looked like they saw patty go into the slot and knew exactly what was coming.

They were also ready for the point shots we tried to deflect. It seems like we need to get a little back to moving the puck down low to mix it up.

I think the Sedins ran into the same problem last year when they were doing the same play. The best way to get this one to work is with a lot of puck movement and after a chance on the one-timer. Once we get the forward on the PK looking to the point Elias should be open for the deflection in the middle.

It just seems like we're a two-trick pony though, with that and the point deflection, and being predictable is a killer.
