Do the Hurricanes and the Whalers count as different teams these days?

I just figured he was with the Pens when they moved from Hartford and came back to Carolina it would, but I could be wrong.

If I remember correctly it was when Mario was either retired the first time or was out because of the cancer.

It was both ;) He was interim captain when Lemieux went out with cancer and he was named captain after Lemieux retired the first time.

Who are the only three players to captain 3 teams?

Answer:
Gretzky (Edm, StL, NYR) Messier (Edm, NYR, Van) and some other guy who is not Ron Francis.

Ron Francis should be included. The Whalers and Hurricanes were two different teams belonging to the same franchise, I believe.

Terry Ruskowski (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid=4707) (Penguins, Kings, Chicago) is the third correct answer.

Do you consider Keith Primeau, Jeff O'Neill and Glen Wesley as having changed teams between the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons? I wouldn't.

If I refer to something about the Devils, I say, "Devils history." That begins on May 27, 1982 when the league approved the transfer of the Colorado Rockies franchise. The team wasn't granted an expansion franchise on that date. They played the previous season in a different city with a different nickname.

I would say that once they ceased to be the Hartford Whalers they became a new team, the Carolina Hurricanes. Granted it is the same franchise, but I think it would be considered a team with a new location and a new nickname, so a new team. Just a question, if Lanny McDonald came out of retirement and became captain of the Devils, would it be his second stint as captain since he was captain of the Rockies?

Ok, this sounds a little contradictory. So "Hurricane's history" begins with the creation of the New England Whalers?

The Hurricane's weren't an expansion franchise either. They moved from Hartford to Carolina. Hence, they are two different teams that belong to the same franchise.

I would say that those players became a part of a new team between seasons. Because they did. They were members of the Hartford Whalers then they were members of the Carolina Hurricanes.

I didn't think Gretzky wore the "C" in New York. I know he wore it in LA, but not with the Rangers.

Scott Niedermayer should then be counted as having served as captain of three different teams -- the New Jersey Devils, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Anaheim Ducks.

Anaheim's other major sports franchise, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, began as the Los Angels Angels in 1961 at LA's Wrigley Field. They also played at Dodger Stadium in LA before moving to their current home in Orange County, which was then known as Anaheim Stadium. The changed their name to the California Angels and then the Anaheim Angels before adopting their current title. Are they not the same team though?

The New York Yankees began thier existence as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901, and the current Baltimore Orioles began that same season in Milwaukee before moving to St. Louis and becoming the Browns for about 50 years.

The NFL's New York Giants have played in three different states -- New York, Connecticut and now New Jersey. They have kept their name the same. Their stadium-mates the New York Jets used to also play in New York, and they started off as the New York Titans in 1960.

Getting back to hockey and the Whalers/Hurricanes, the Carolina Hurricanes official site states this in their franchise timeline: Peter Karmanos announces that the team will relocate to Raleigh, North Carolina. The team will play in Greensboro, North Carolina for the first two seasons.

The team merely relocated from Hartford to North Carolina, but it's still the same team.

I didn't think Gretzky wore the "C" in New York. I know he wore it in LA, but not with the Rangers. He wore it when either Leetch or Messier was injured, but he wasn't officially named captain. Gretzky just filled in for a game here and there.

I think there's a large difference between a name change and a complete relocation.
