MORE FLEURY SPECULATION.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reported yesterday of speculation Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury might be shopped. "TSN commentator Pierre McGuire, who was sounded out by the Pens for a player personnel job several months back but turned it down, said on his radio show Friday that a Western team was talking to the Pens about the 21-year-old who has tons of ability but has been clearly outplayed by former Blackhawks goalie Jocelyn Thibault in camp", write Matheson. He adds that while the Pens are publicly denying the rumour it may be possible that Western teams with spare goalies (Anaheim, San Jose) might be sniffing around.
Spector's Note: Hat tip to GJ Berg. Anaheim might be the better fit in that scenario, since the Sharks are very deep in goaltenders and may have designs on promoting Nolan Schaefer should they trade Nabokov or Toskala. As things stand now it's just speculation but if Fleury's game doesn't improve that speculation could intensify in the coming weeks.
JaysAttackDucks 10-02-2006, 09:55 AM That would be alright, but I don't think that the Ducks really need a goalie. Giggy and Bryz are solid.
Fighter 10-02-2006, 11:00 AM MAF = Bust
Jerky Leclerc 10-02-2006, 11:16 AM MAF = Bust
Its still too early to call him a bust. MAF played when he was 18 years old so it seems like he's been in the league for decades. You look at a guy like DiPietro who was drafted in 2000 and he still hasn't reached his "potential." However, the MAF being picked #1 overall is looking real bad compared to the players drafted in that deep 2003 draft.

Snap Wilson 10-02-2006, 11:17 AM How many preseason minutes has he played? And they've already determined he's a bust?
Doctor No 10-02-2006, 11:21 AM MAF = Bust
The dude's 21, for Pete's sake. Let's just calm down with the "bust" talk.
I'd take him deadline if Bryz outs Giggy and gets the number one spot. MAF could then act as back-up to him, and would hopfully put presure on Bryz for a few years.
rollerhockey038 10-02-2006, 12:24 PM I agree. If we traded Bryz for MAF. MAF could still show potential cause his age. If he backed up Giggy I think he could break through.

I watched part of the Pens last pre-season game... he looked pretty damn good to me in that game. WAAAY to early to call him a bust. But he is good support for never drafting a goalie that early (see JL's post).

There are just sooo many capable goalies out their now. I would be furious if the Ducks wasted a pick in the top 3 rounds on a goalie ever really. It just makes no senseto do that in todays NHL.
Let other teams draft/develop and then trade these goalies away too early. Giguere is a perfect example of this.

On the flip side Bryzgalov is a 2nd rounder. I don't mind taking a goalie there or in the 3rd round since a large number of those skaters bust anyway.
But I'd never take one in the first round and I'd NEVER, NEVER take one in the top 5.
Davey Duck 10-02-2006, 01:16 PM way too young MAF + bad Penguins defense = :help:
more mature MAF + Niedermeyer + Pronger =

definitely agreed. I've been against the 1st round goalie draft choice for a long long time...
Pepper 10-02-2006, 02:39 PM The worst thing you can do is to draft a russian goalie with a first round pick.
If you do that you're most likely getting a goalie as skilled as Ty Conklin and as motivated as Alex Smirnov.
ktulu98 10-02-2006, 05:19 PM I would like to see jiggy and fleury in 1 team
give them bryz(i dont like him much)
Randall Graves* 10-02-2006, 05:28 PM I'd like him in our pipeline, he should be in the AHL but I don't see how this makes sense unless the pens really want Giguere or Bryzgalov..I think a team like the blackhawks or something makes more sense.
phillypensfan 10-02-2006, 05:56 PM Fleury would not be involved in the trade. They are looking at a team that has depth in goal simply to bring in another goalie until Fleury is completely ready to be the starter.
I heard that segment, I'm 99.9% sure McGuire said the Pens were talking to a team with lots of depth in goal because they are not sure MAF is ready to be #1. MAF would NOT be involved in the trade.

snarktacular 10-02-2006, 10:02 PM Well I don't know why the Penguins would be shopping MAF, but spector's trade rumor seems to pretty adamant that the speculation is about trading Fleury. I trust the website more that the speculation is about Fleury than some random poster who says it isn't. But it's just speculation, so he may not actually be shopped.
Sevat 10-02-2006, 11:09 PM Funny, everyone wants to trade Bryzgalov it seems. Why?
No one seems to know?
McGuire already released a statement they were not shopping Fluery but looking for goaltender depth

What part of my post says I want Bryz gone? I said I'd take MAF if Bryz beat Giggy out and then MAF was his back up.

rollerhockey038 10-03-2006, 09:46 AM Well Looks like Spectors is saying the Queens are the front runner for MAF.
"Oz" sends in the following: "According to Mark Madden of ESPN Radio Pittsburgh 1250, the Pittsburgh Penguins are in talks with the L.A. Kings to trade Marc-Andre Fleury to the Kings. Possible players going the other way are defensive prospect and Sidney Crosby's best friend Jack Johnson and backup goalie Jason LaBabera."
ktulu98 10-03-2006, 01:49 PM no no, I want him in anaheim
