Player Article: Ryan Shannon and Tim Brent

http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/sports/pros/ducks/abox/article_1287932.php

Right wing Ryan Shannon and center Tim Brent might easily have received Monday off, though neither would have wanted it.

Instead, the rookie candidates were in the lineup for a third consecutive night as the Ducks dropped a 5-4, shootout decision to the Kings in an NHL exhibition game at Staples Center.

"This is actually nice, charter flights and filet mignon on the plane," Shannon said.

"Some people stepped up in the absence of some key members of our hockey club," Coach Randy Carlyle said. "Shannon and Brent were at the top of the list. I would say they earned an extended look."

Shannon hasn't hurt his cause with a team-high plus-six mark in three exhibitions before Monday.

He (Brent) produced 15 goals and 24 points in 37 games for the Pirates last season and has shown the past three nights that he can chip in offensively.

"He's made a case for himself," Carlyle said. "He's outplayed some people at that position."

LETS GO DUCKS!!! :) :yo: :handclap: :D

(NOTE: Thanks to Jerky for giving me the idea of putting a picture of a stadium and the concept of a daily player article). :-)

As far as the trivia goes, you have to nail it down to one or the other if you think that one of those choices is the correct answer. Can't say both. :)

INDEED! Very good. :) One of the craziest games I have ever seen. The Wings jump to a quick 3-0 lead, then the Ducks score 5 unanswered goals, then the Wings jump ahead 6-5, then the Ducks go ahead 7-6 and get an empty net goal to seal the victory. Just awesome! :yo:

I am giving credit to demon as well as he did mention the Wings. :) :jump: I should have specified the one choice thing earlier.

As a reward, you will now each be receiving a beautifully crafted Tiffany Ring. http://i.b5z.net/i/u/215960/i/grewvy_plastic_ring_ezr.JPG

You guys got quite a steal by signing Ryan Shannon. Let me tell you. All you have to do is look at the way he progressed at BC. He improved every year, played hurt, and was a great leader. I covered the team when he was a senior. He is all class, just a great kid.

I was a little surprised to see him progress at this rate, but he is responsible defensively and is a pretty good setup man. From what I understand he and Penner lit up the AHL together last year. He is naturally a center, but as you can see his speed is valuable on the wing too.

If I had to compare him to a current player in the NHL I'd say he has the potential to be a Scott Gomez type player.

Was at the game...Joseph was really sharp in net except for two plays, which were the Perry goal (you know, the wraparound the goalie never seems to see that Perry scores once a week), and Marchant's from a bad angle. The pass by Shannon was sick though. He did it right as he was getting smashed by two Yotes against the boards.

Perry, Getzlaf, and Kunitz saw time together and it was the best forechecking line. Kunitz was everywhere, had tons of chances but Joseph was playing very well. He made two very good glove saves on Pronger blasts.

Beauchemin had an off night. He got beaten a couple times and made a couple poor passes. He did have some good hits (Nolan) and came to the defense of Teemu when he was down. Speaking of that, he went back for stitches so I dont think he lost teeth. There was tons of blood on the ice though.

OBrien is faster than he gets credit for. He brought the puck from goaline to the opposing blueline a couple times, and rather easily. He also had some good hits. His fight against Nolan wasnt really a fight because Nolan never threw a punch. He tried to wrestle OB before Shane got some good punches in then took him down.

Marchant looked good...I mistaked him for Mac a couple times and thats never a bad thing.

The Nieds goal was beautiful. Niedermayer just went to a spot in the middle of the ice around the hasmarks and put his stick blade flat on the ice and McDonald did the rest.

It was actually a pretty chippy game...Im suprised there wernt more fights though Phoenix didnt have anyone in Fridge's class. Joseph was hitting guys all night and got caught once. I actually didnt mind it because he was playing really well and wasnt talking to the refs at all. He's just old and mean, which I like.

The defense didnt play THAT well as a whole. Phoenix had a ton of great chances in the first but couldnt score. I thought Phoenix played well but just couldnt finish. Bryzgalov was superb and then gave up a softie to Scatchard, but thats nothing new. The penalty kill was good, lots of pressure on the pointmen. Phoenix never got anything going on the ppl.

The Ducks ppl was very good when they were in the offensive zone. Getting there was another matter. They had trouble moving out and gaining the zone often being forced to shoot it in instead...

The lines were mixed and matched some of the time because of Teemu's injury, but I saw these:

Kunitz-Mac-Shannon
Kunitz-Getzlaf-Perry
Fedoruk-Getzlaf-Perry
Penner-Marchant-Shannon
Moen-Pahlsson-Niedermayer

As Chistov23 suggested to me it could well be the opening night lineup cause we are playing the Kings that night. That is always a rough (chippy) game, so it might well be Moen over Chistov that night for the toughness factor.

I saw that last night and was wondering if NHL.com was screwing up again, as it showed Getzy played 32:05 the other night.

But the 20 seems legit...too bad the "Mini PP Line" didn't click right out of the box. (Mini referring to the apparent height restriction to play on that line) ;)

Losing Teemu was a HUGE chance for Shanny, if that top PP unit had clicked I don't think there would be ANY question of him being here next week.

After Teemu left the game, Shannon was being double shifted with the Mac/Kunitz and Marchant/Penner lines. He also took over Selanne's role in the pp.

Shannon plays similarly to Andy MacDonald in his first few years with Anaheim. He is shifty but needs to learn how to change his speed/be more explosive at the start of his stride. And like what Andy Mac had to do, Shannon needs to bulk up. Right now, he gets pushed around way to easy. I think his playing weight should be around 190 pounds...from 175.

Shannon had an okay night last night. He got lots of ice time and played well when paired with Marchant/Penner. I don't think he'll break out this season but give him a few years and this kid could be a top 6 forward.
