shawnmullin 09-26-2006, 02:49 PM I don't see anything on here yet about Ryan, perhaps I just missed it. Anyhow, I work at CFOS in Owen Sound and we have a story today saying Ryan is back with the Attack as of today. I hope he had a good camp up there, but looks like it's another year in Jr for him.
EDIT: Here's a link

Jerky Leclerc 09-26-2006, 02:55 PM But Futa says the Ducks made it clear to Ryan and the Attack at the start of their training camp that he would be sent back to Owen Sound eventually.
Futa says the Ducks didn't want to waste Ryan with a few minutes of fourth-line NHL play per game, when he could get a half-hour per game as a Junior A captain.
Futa says Ducks GM Brian Burke had nothing but praise for Ryan's work with the Ducks, particularly his improved fitness.
Interesting comment. It seems like everyone expected Ryan to be back at Owen Sounds

I'm glad he's back from the Owen Sound perspective, but I think it's a shame players like Ryan this year or Schremp last year can't play in the AHL.
TheJoeMan 09-26-2006, 03:10 PM I just hope Bobby dominates this year. He has a good chance to win World Junior gold and the Memorial Cup because all I here is how good Owen Sound is going to be. Corey Perry had such a year in 04-05 and it would be great if Bobby could emulate that.
Interesting comment. It seems like everyone expected Ryan to be back at Owen Sounds
Everyone but a few deluded fans.
McDonald19 09-26-2006, 06:58 PM I still think Bobby Ryan is 2 years away from being an every day NHLer.
Dominate the OHL this season. Play a full season in the AHL next season. And then he will be ready.
As for the other cuts today. No real surprises.
Shane O'Brien and Bruno St. Jacques are in a battle for the last d-man spot now.
The other interesting battle is for the last couple forward spots, which will be the two healthy scratched forwards, if we carry 3 healthy scratches. Tim Brent, Travis Moen, Travis Green and Shawn Thornton.

So are you convinced that Shannon is on the team? I expect Brent to be sent down soon. Green will stay with the team. The battle for the last pressbox seat is between Moen and Thorton. I haven't seen Thorton play, but I've heard his name a lot during preseason, where as I haven't heard Moen's name once.

Tim seems pretty good on faceoffs. It is too bad we signed Green, but I think Burke is in the "now" mode. So Moen and Green are going to be the 13-14th forwards for sure unless they can waive them and have another team pick them up. Thornton and Brent will probably be the first injury callups.
McDonald19 09-26-2006, 08:10 PM So are you convinced that Shannon is on the team?
yeah...I would be surprised if he was sent down.
McSorley 33 09-26-2006, 08:30 PM If it's between Thornton and Moen, keep Thornton. Thornton looked pretty tough for you guys. I was surprised at his fighting skills.

Yeah playing in the AHL would be best for his development, but now he needs to have a consistant OHL season. If he can do that i'd consider this year a success for him.
Lyons71 09-26-2006, 10:00 PM I'll be the first to say it: Bobby Ryan needs to work on his skating.
I am glad he is back to Owen Sound, I hope the Ducks organization has the patience they have been showing so far and keep developing Ryan without rushing him into the NHL.

But I don't think you're the first to say it. ;) Entire threads have been derailed to that topic.

I agree...I think this is a rule that needs to be revisited.....A player like Ladislav Smid can come to North America as an 18 y/o and play for the Pirates but yet a player who has excelled and by all accounts reached his potential as an 18 y/o as to go back to the CHL for a minimum of 2 year or until he is 20 y/o.
I think they should at least reduce it by a year......if a player is 19 then he should be allowed to join his NHL's farm team.
snarktacular 09-27-2006, 11:38 PM I kind of understand why the CHl would like their players to stay until 20... they want to keep some talent. But some sort of exceptions should be made... say players drafted in the first round, or in the top 5 in their position in points the previous s eason or something could go to the AHL at 19.

Right, but he's already been dominant in the OHL. He needs to take a step up.

No less than 6 ppg is a disappointment.
snarktacular 09-28-2006, 02:39 AM I wonder how many points he'd have to get per game just to silence all the critics about picking him before Johnson(which even I question a little)? 6 ppg might not even be enough based on some of the comments about him in the prospects board.
CHL Watcher 09-28-2006, 11:58 PM Some of you guys need to educate yourselves on the league.
First off....eight things you already know or you should know....
1. 'Sid the Kid' had 2.5 points per game in the CHL. Nobody has scored more than that since Lemieux/Gretzky and that was ages ago. 3 points is a nice debut.
2. Nobody has ever managed a 4 point average....Lemieux coming closest.
3. Trevor Lewis has already publicly stated that the CHL/OHL is clearly better than the USHL if you're looking for Junior comparisons. I don't think this is news to anyone who understands the differences.
4. The AHL sees most of the best players bypass it completely.
5. Ryan has not dominated at the junior level. He obviously has the potential to do so, but was tenth in the league (OHL only) in scoring last year, fading terribly in the second half of the season. Crosby was first in the entire CHL the previous year.
6. Power forwards take longer than the little guys and generally the same time as defensemen.
7. Most of the best players in the OHL would step right into the AHL and some would bypass it completely.
8. Owen Sound's first powerplay unit has three NHL first rounders and five NHL draftees. Ryan's line weighs about 650 pounds and each person is drafted by the NHL, two of them first round picks.
Strickly for those that don't already know.....this is no ordinary junior league.
Please see the Ryan question thread...
6. Power forwards take longer than the little guys and generally the same time as defensemen.
Yeah, this is something to keep in mind. Guys like Bertuzzi, Tkachuk, Shanahan, Neely, Leclair, etc. didn't exactly set the league on fire at age 19. Some of them didn't become impact players until about 7 years after they were drafted. We may have to be quite patient with Ryan.
CHL Watcher 09-29-2006, 12:24 AM ...and patience really isn't the situation until next year doesn't work out. Playing at the junior level (or some equivalent) is quite normal at 19, even for first rounders.
I'm certain it's the "Crosby effect".
Some recent Anaheim examples of "patience" and the level of play where Ryan is going..
Mike Babcock played and coached in the CHL.
Lupul played as a 19 year old.
Rob Neidermayer played 13 games at 20 years old after a full season in the NHL! He didn’t average two points per game.
Getzlaf played at 19.
Beauchimin played at 20.
Perry played at 19.
Fedoruk played at 20.
O’Donnell at 19.
Wright….same story…..
Etc etc….
The league is a league where you usually have to be 19-20 to dominate and it’s up to the scouts to recognize not just who is but who will. Ryan has incredible hands and great vision. He has size you can’t teach to go with it. He’s determined. When he’s up to speed he does fine but his start isn’t great and he doesn’t exactly zip around. Still he’s a sure bet to be okay in the long run….
…and he is doing exactly what most of last year’s best players did before him. Hopefully he’ll have as much success as some of them. He certainly has some support in an Owen Sound team that should be good.
snarktacular 09-29-2006, 12:46 AM Haha, I was entirely kidding. I wouldn't care if he got 1 ppg, as long as he improved on his defense and skating. Although 6+ ppg would certainly be nice...
lux_interior 09-29-2006, 01:14 AM No less than 6 ppg is a disappointment.
I'm not clear what you're getting at here.

You should reword that to say..Ryan has not dominated a full season at the junior level. He did dominate the first half of the season before he ran out of gas.
