Feature Player: Bobby Ryan

http://www.attackhockey.com/playerpics/bobbyryan.jpg

During the summer, Bobby Ryan spent many hours training with his father. But in camp, he has shown little of the form he
displayed in the Ontario Hockey League. Most likely, he will have to return to his junior team, the Owen Sound Attack.

It didn't help that Ryan's first NHL game gave him butterflies.

"It could have been much better," he said of last Monday's game, which the Ducks lost, 7-1. "I was a nervous wreck."

Ducks General Manager Brian Burke isn't worried.

"When you're drafted second overall, expectations are high," he said. "Our expectations for him are high. We're very happy
with his progress.

"We're pretty crowded so it's a stretch to see him here [in October]. But we're going to give him that chance."

Ryan knows it will take a lot.

"You can't ever be satisfied and I wasn't," he said of that game. "I could have done more to make the score a little closer."

No surprise there. He's been getting a lot of one-on-one instruction in camp though so I think the important people are expecting big things from him.

Shannon's move was sick.

Awesome move. More impressive was that the goalie was Roberto Luongo. 1 goal, 1 assist, and a shootout goal. I think its safe to say Ryan Shannon has earned his roster spot.

As for Ryan, no there is need to rush the kid. With the depth on this team, Ryan is going to have to win it. Hopefully, he'll keep his head high and work hard in improving his game in Owen Sound.

I was surprised to see Getz, Perry, Penner, etc play so many games in the pre-season. I wonder if its going to wear on the kids later down the season. But there is no doubt, Carlyle won't be treating the kids like prospects. This team is going to be ready to compete for the Cup on Oct. 6.

I just finished watching the highlights. This guy Shannon seems to be the real deal, I am surprised nobody really talked about him before training camp/pre-season. I really hope he is not a pre-season thing.

As Aeryn mentioned, I think Bryzgalov was overall good tonight, but he has to work on some areas if he wants the starting job (honestly, what's with sliding inside the net with the puck).

On a radom note, I wish we had the Sedins here in Anaheim, they are just awesome.

LOL - I told you it was cheaper to leave Mikkelson behind...also said the "important people" were happy...

The 19-year-old Anaheim Duck prospect suited up for his first NHL game Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks. The most likely scenario was for Mikkelson to remain in the city and rejoin his junior club today, rather than return to Anaheim.

Due to a combination of his age and a Ducks blueline that's deeper than Barry White's voice, Mikkelson was never expected to stick with the big club. Still, he's the last of eight Giant players to return from their respective pro camps.

"He'll be back with Vancouver soon -- we may be deciding tonight," said Ducks general manager Bob Murray, adding Mikkelson's play at camp has exceeded expectations for Anaheim's second round pick in the 2005 National Hockey League entry draft.

"He's done very well. I've been most impressed," continued Murray. "He's been picking up very nicely what the big guys [Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger] are doing."
