SHANNON SPARKLES
A year ago, Ryan Shannon lasted one day in Ducks training camp. The early returns this year suggest the versatile forward might have a chance to stick around a long while.
Though listed at 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, Shannon's super-sized skill level makes him an interesting candidate for a roster spot. He displayed that offensive creativity on a number of occasions in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over visiting San Jose, with linemates Dustin Penner and Todd Marchant each scoring a goal after a nice set-up by Shannon.
"That was just another step in his progress," Carlyle said. "He's done some things to impress. He continues to play well."
Shannon is a former Boston College standout who was second among rookies and ninth overall in American League scoring last season with 27 goals and 86 points in 71 games for Portland, Maine. He added 11 goals and 22 points in 19 playoff games.
"I saw him last year in the rookie camp, but he wasn't the dynamic player in rookie camp that he developed into in Portland," Carlyle said.

Ha, that picture with Penner and Marchant is great. Takes me back to Nintendo hockey and rolling out a Small-Medium-Large line.

You clearly haven't seen the one of Pronger towering over Mac, Selanne and Chistov. He is HUGE, we should call him Goliath.

likewall32 09-23-2006, 06:25 PM Bout to hop in the car to make the drive down, I think there are alot of Shark fans comin with me. What seems to be the general consensus on Duck fans makin the trek up tonight? I know it's exhibition, but it's the two best teams (on paper, and soon to be on ice) in the division, a rivalry that will finally start to catch fire. Should be fun.
Spankatola Jamnuts 09-23-2006, 06:36 PM The B group plays tonight, so my expectations are pretty low.
Earl Sleek 09-23-2006, 07:18 PM Anybody know where I can get a good Ryan Shannon photo in a Ducks jersey?
I'm not sure if they're any good, but here's a couple my buddy took at the SJ game.
Randall Graves* 09-23-2006, 08:05 PM Just hoping Bobby Ryan shows something tonight, Penner should get plenty of ice time(I'm assuming he's playing since he sat yesterday) as well as Shane O'Brien and Brenden Mikkelson.

hockeydemon05 09-23-2006, 11:45 PM yeah I know, last night was crazy.
I want 5 on 5 hockey for at least 5 minutes tonight ;)
BlackGoldGreen 09-23-2006, 11:46 PM Any live radio feeds? I got money on this game and can't see it. Thanks
Static 09-23-2006, 11:48 PM Any live radio feeds? I got money on this game and can't see it. Thanks
money on preseason...yikes. Look at the first post in this thread. Another penalty. BOOOOOO
hockeydemon05 09-23-2006, 11:49 PM Three hooking penalties :O
Static 09-23-2006, 11:56 PM Goal! Brent?
hockeydemon05 09-23-2006, 11:56 PM Yupp, brent it was!
good job brent.

Static 09-24-2006, 12:03 AM Nieds.....WHY??
Randall Graves* 09-24-2006, 12:04 AM Penner got high sticked in the face
hockeydemon05 09-24-2006, 12:05 AM Gasp, its even strength right now. 4 on 4.
Static 09-24-2006, 12:07 AM someone scored...Georges
Randall Graves* 09-24-2006, 12:09 AM I thought this was a 'neutral site game?' if so why do the sharks get a goal horn?
McDonald19 09-24-2006, 12:10 AM I thought this was a 'neutral site game?' if so why do the sharks get a goal horn?
isnt it technically a sharks home game?
Static 09-24-2006, 12:12 AM isnt it technically a sharks home game?
yes...why else would they play in northern cali? Its the equivalent of a Ducks home game in SD.
Another penalty?? Thorton's speed? I didnt know he was fast...
Randall Graves* 09-24-2006, 12:13 AM isnt it technically a sharks home game?
I had thought it was billed a nuetral site game.
Randall Graves* 09-24-2006, 12:14 AM I hope the refs aren't calling all this crap during the season again..
Jerky Leclerc 09-24-2006, 12:14 AM Maybe Anaheim wanted to work on the pk today.
snarktacular 09-24-2006, 12:14 AM Well SJ is listed second in espn and nhl, so it probably is techically a SJ home game... but Fresno is closer to SJ than Ana.
Jerky Leclerc 09-24-2006, 12:17 AM Sorry I just started listening to the feed. Anybody know the line combos?
hockeydemon05 09-24-2006, 12:18 AM Obrien vs kloe? chhloe? klose? some sj dude.
Jerky Leclerc 09-24-2006, 12:19 AM Three games for Obrien, three fights. At this pace, O'brien is going to have 82 fighting majors. Beat that Kevin Sawyer.
Jerky Leclerc 09-24-2006, 12:41 AM Nabokov is drunk. Gives up worst NHL goal ever.

I missed it. What happened?
Jerky Leclerc 09-24-2006, 12:50 AM I missed it. What happened?
Sounds like the puck was sliding slooooowwwwwly toward the net. Nabokov slide for some reason and let the puck through him. Brent gets his second.

Are W.T.F goals common for Russian goalies? :sarcasm:
snarktacular 09-24-2006, 12:57 AM Man Perry is just so good at pissing people off. I don't know how he does it, but I love that. Granted it didn't help the team this time, but still.
Ducksforcup 09-24-2006, 01:01 AM Shawn Thornton completley owns Davisson. :yo:
3-2 Sharks though. :(
Jerky Leclerc 09-24-2006, 01:03 AM Thornton is doing pretty well in the fight department.

TheJoeMan 09-24-2006, 01:24 AM Is Bobby Ryan not playing tonight? I have yet to hear his name in this broadcast.
Nope, probably playing tomorrow since it's unlikely Getz, Perry and Kunitz will play three straight games.
Jerky Leclerc 09-24-2006, 01:39 AM Doug Murray mentioned how the rules have been tweaked. You can't crosscheck a guy but you can move a guy with both hands on the stick.
Ducksforcup 09-24-2006, 01:42 AM :( Sharkies score.
hockeydemon05 09-24-2006, 01:44 AM Come One Ducksss!!!!!!!

Jerky Leclerc 09-24-2006, 02:04 AM penalty on the Sharks. Ducks will have 6-4 advantage.

Spankatola Jamnuts 09-24-2006, 02:10 AM Whoever lines up with Penner seems to get points. That guy is a preseason beast.
snarktacular 09-24-2006, 02:38 AM He was a postseason beast too... maybe he's a ____season beast. Or he could just be a beast period.

Too bad he always gets hurt..it's really killed his stock on the organizational depth chart.
190Octane 09-24-2006, 04:03 AM One thing I like about this team is its' willingness to stick up for one another. I read on a sharks' game log that Perry dropped the gloves to go after Bernier after Bernier hit St. Jacques... ballsy of Perry but I like it.
I am sorry if this has been posted, but what were the lines for this game?

Sorry, that was the first time they deviated THAT MUCH from the rosters I've been privy to.
Maybe this will convince people that I'm not RC. ;)
Treat that long roster as just a list of guys they took on the road and ignore the lines I guess.
lux_interior 09-24-2006, 04:32 PM So we're 2-2 in the preseason? Eh, whatever.
Dirk316 09-24-2006, 05:41 PM Havent really had much time so far this year to follow the team but is it safe to say O'Brien has clinched his spot on the team? :dunno:
Spankatola Jamnuts 09-24-2006, 05:45 PM The guys on the radio have had some good things to say about him, but the penalties keep cropping up.
I'd say he's the frontrunner, but he's still kind of getting in his own way.

Fine, I'll believe that your initials aren't RC. They could be DF or NB though.

Clinched no, shown that he's capable of handling the job? Sure, but I don't think the coaching staff is focused on just making sure he's ready because St. Jacques and Skinner have both shown they bring a lot to the table too. Huskins could have a shot as well but if has games where he takes as many penalties as he took last night, I don't think so. OB's PP goal last night really helped his cause though.
Pepper 09-24-2006, 06:41 PM OB brings a combination of talents that both Burke and Carlyle value very highly, toughness and scoring. Skinner is smoother but he doesn't have the toughness, St.Jacques doesn't have the offense or the toughness.
In 3 games OB has 2 minors (both in the first game) IIRC plus 3 fighting majors. If he can keep up this pace he's definetly the favorite for the last spot. His biggest problem is the stupid penalties, if he can stay out of the box (for minor penalties) for the rest of the games, he's a lock.

I agree, I really hope OB keeps the way he is playing right now. He seems to be improving his ways of taking stupid penalties, which is great to see. If he can play his game without taking stupid pentalties, he would be the defenseman Burke is looking for.
