Will he or won't he?

Teemu Selanne is approaching two milestones in his career this coming season with the Anaheim Ducks. His eighth goal of this season will give him 500 on his NHL regular-season career, propelled by the 76 goals he scored in his rookie year with Winnipeg. Also, when the Ducks travel to Raleigh on December 30th to battle the defending Stanley Cup champion, the Carolina Hurricanes, that will be Mr. Selanne's 1000th NHL career regular season game.

However, there is one problem. Mr. Selanne said last year that if the Ducks won the Stanley Cup, he would have retired. At 36 years of age now, Mr. Selanne still plays so well and with a youthful exuberance that makes him fit right in with his younger teammates, such as his linemates Andy McDonald and Chris Kunitz. With Anaheim has the leading contender to win the Cup this year, will he retire or will he stay in Anaheim? :dunno: :shakehead :help: :( :hockey: :pout: :stanley:

Depends on how he feels at the end of the year. He's taking it a season at a time.

He's said he's staying, and I can't see him leaving. He wants a cup, and here is one of the best places to do it right now. If he retires after winning it, then all's fine with me. It's a damn good way to go if you ask me.

If the games continue to be called the way they were last season, I could see Teemu playing a few more seasons yet. The clutching and grabbing of the "old-NHL" was wearing on him and his knees, and said numerous times it just wasn't fun anymore. Now, he appears to love being back in Anaheim and supporting this young core. Barring a major injury, or a Cup win, I see him hanging around for at least another year, maybe two.

I hope your not "putting the cart before the horse". I'm a Ducks fan and I love their chances this year. That said, there's no guarantee they get out of the First Round of the playoffs. H*ll, there's no guarantee that they make the playoffs.

It's a gruelling road to winning the Stanley Cup. I'll be thrilled if, at the completion of this season, Teemu will be forced to make a decision as to whether he wants to continue playing after having won the Cup.

I'm a Ducks fan, too, and I also love their chances this year. The acquisitions of Chris Pronger in the Joffrey Lupul trade, Ian Moran and Travis Green due to free agency, getting a great prospective scorer in Karl Stewart in the Vitaly Vishnevski trade, re-signing of Stanislav Chistov, wonderful goaltending... it's going to be really good to be a Duck. (It's a shame that they took out the word "Mighty" from the team's name just when they had the best roster in their history.:biglaugh: )

There is no guarantee about anything at the start of the season. Come on, everyone thought that Ottawa was going to win the Cup last year, and Detroit was going to do away with Edmonton, so nothing is certain. I just want to know if Mr. Selanne will stay in Anaheim, considering his threat that he would retire. I personally do not want him to retire because I feel that he should when he feels that he is physically unable and when he knows that the team will do well enough without his services.

Mr. Selanne is the franchise player on that team, and he has been for several years, even now without his good friend Paul Kariya. But the Niedermayer brothers, J.S. Giguere, Andy McDonald and Ilja Bryzgalov are all helping Mr. Selanne remain so highly among Ducks legends, despite the franchise being only twelve years old.:)

I think that as long as he remains injury free, and continues enjoying the game he will keep playing. I hope #8 scores goal #8 at home this year :)

I think Selanne will have to re-consider retirement if he wins a cup here. But yeah, as long as he stays healthy I think he will keep playing the game.

Fair enough, but I think it's pretty apparent that Scott Niedermayer or Chris Pronger---not Teemu---is "the franchise player on the team".

getting a great prospective scorer in Karl Stewart in the Vitaly Vishnevski trade,

I wouldn't get your hopes up about Stewart. He has never been a big time scorer at any level. 35 goals in his third season of juniors is nothing to get excited about. Stewart is a character guy, and he may make the NHL but it won't be as a scorer. His upside is a third line agitator who can chip in some offense and kill penalties and check.

As good of defencemen that Scottie Niedermayer and Chris Pronger are, I don't think that they are the franchise players of the team. Since Scottie became an unrestricted free agent, he knew that there was the possibility that he could get signed to Anaheim to play with his younger brother Rob, who was traded there from the Calgary Flames in 2003 (surprisingly, the Niedermayers battled against each other for the Stanley Cup that year). Chris Pronger is there because of a trade that saw one of the best young forwards that the Ducks should have held onto for years to come -- Joffrey Lupul.

Mr. Selanne played with the Ducks in the mid-90s when Paul Kariya played with him and now, he has become the Mighty Duck yet again.

I could have said that Jean-Sebastien Giguere is the franchise player; would you have agreed with that instead?

He's 8 again. Ozolinsh had his 8 last year. Now that he's gone, Teemu went back to 8.

Perhaps you and I have a different notion of what a "franchise player" is. To me, he's the single most-important guy on the team. As much as I like Teemu, when playoff time rolls around, the loss of either Scott Niedermayer or Chris Pronger would much more severely compromise the Ducks chances of winning the Cup than the loss of Teemu.

Let's consider this a wish to see him reunited with Saku Koivu in my hometown, even if I would not mind seeing Saku leave for Anaheim. I've always wished for that, ever since Teemu came in the league back in 1992.

If it looks like a Duck, and it shoots like a Duck, and it "quacks" like a Duck... it belongs in Anaheim!

Mr. Selanne already played for a Canadian NHL franchise. Now the Anaheim Ducks are his.

I have to disagree Kick Save, While Nieds and Pronger ARE franchise players this particular team would have major problems scoring goals if it doesn't have Selanne at the level he was last year, much less not having him at all.

I agree. Brian Burke gave Mr. Selanne a million dollars, expecting him to score 20 goals. Come on; be realistic. If Mr. Selanne can score 76 goals in a rookie season, and he continued to score many goals. Well, then. We all know the outcome. That season in Colorado notwithstanding, of course. But 40 goals as a 35-year-old. That seems pretty sweet.

So how many goals for Mr. Selanne in 2006-07?

Dolphinwave
10-03-2006, 02:43 PM
77 ? lol!

Quite frankly, with the defense behind him, and iproved young players around, I'd say he could score 45-50.

Mr. Selanne would not do well enough in Montreal unless the Habs had the chance to win the Cup this year. Since Anaheim is widely regarded as a potential Cup clincher, keep Mr. Selanne in Anaheim. He will always be a Duck!

Selänne has been one of my favorite players always. I remember as a kid when Selänne played for Jokerit in Finland he was so amazing player to watch. He didnt belong in SM-Liiga back then, he scored 39 goals in 44 games, plus 10 playoff goals in 10 games. I've never seen so dominant performance in SM-Liiga.

Back to topic:
I hope Selänne wins the cup and continues playing in NHL for as long as he still enjoys it.

A franchise player, in my mind is a player who is most identified with a particular team. Selanne fits that bill, as does Giguere. I would think that Selanne will be the very first player to see his jersey hanging from the Pond (I know, I know) rafters if he retires from the Ducks. Kariya should have been, but ....no.
