The defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils are unbeaten in eight straight games and are still having trouble drawing fans to Continental Airlines Arena.

That won't be a problem Saturday.

A near sellout crowd will be on hand as the Devils try to continue their dominance over the rival New York Rangers in the first of six meetings between the teams this season.

New Jersey, which won its third Stanley Cup in nine years last season, continued its strong play Thursday with a 3-1 victory over visiting Florida.

Patrik Elias, Brian Gionta and Jay Pandolfo scored second-period goals and Martin Brodeur made 20 saves, helping the Devils improve to 6-0-2 since a 5-2 loss to Boston on Oct. 25.

``It's kind of weird, we're winning and you don't feel the atmosphere yet and we're on top,'' Elias said. ``Maybe that's a good thing. We tied a couple of games and we weren't very happy with the tie. It makes us a better team.''

Only 10,202 fans attended Thursday's game in the 19,040-seat capacity arena. The Devils' 14,077 average attendance through nine home games ranks 24th in the league.

``My job is to win hockey games,'' Devils coach Pat Burns said. ``I don't believe my job is to go out and invite the people into the games. We're winning, winning at home. I don't think I'm the one that can answer that. I don't count the people. I don't look.''

With the rival Rangers coming to town on a Saturday, the Devils can be assured of a big crowd, although many of them will be rooting for the visitors.

The Devils are one of the rare teams that has to deal with opposing fans in their own building, but that hasn't stopped them from dominating the Rangers. New Jersey is 19-2-10 in the series since the start of the 1997 season, including 13-1-2 at home.

One of the main reasons for New Jersey's success in the series is Brodeur, who is 25-10-14 with a 2.17 goals-against average in 49 career games against the Rangers. Brodeur has started 48 straight regular season games against New York.

Saturday is the opener of a four-game road trip for the Rangers, who are just one game over .500 despite having played a league-low four road games this season.

Martin Rucinsky scored one goal and set up two others Wednesday as New York ended a three-game winless streak with a 6-2 victory over Pittsburgh.

Rangers center Eric Lindros left in the first period with a scratched cornea after taking a high stick from Pittsburgh's Josef Melichar. Lindros, who missed seven games earlier this season with a chest injury, is unlikely to play Saturday, but could return Sunday against Chicago.

I'm totally loving this game right now. The Devils are bringing not just their A game, but their A+ game. Not just on offense, but on the many blocked shots and hits the boys in red are throwing.

On a different note, this game is also being aired in Russia. They're getting a dang good game right now.

http://www.nypost.com/sports/devils/42745.htm

The cold hearts, those of the elder, unrepentant, unconverted New Jersey Ranger fans, Martin Brodeur concedes.

"We're going right for their kids," the Devils' franchise goalie said yesterday. "It's hard to convert Rangers fans. We have to keep our Devils fans and build on them."

Some more Brodeur quotes:

"It's a big rivalry and we get up for these games," said Brodeur, who stands 25-10-14 with four shutouts against the Rangers, that victory total only second to his 28 over the Islanders.

"There's a sense of pride," Brodeur said. "The next day you've got to be around New Jersey. It's half-and-half. They're the only fans in the world who shake your hand and say they're Ranger fans."

I laughed pretty good over that big hit on Brian Rafalski a few games back where his opponent bounced off him and went down hard to the ice like he'd hit Superman. 2nd funniest thing I've seen this season was during a Bruins telecast where Dale Arnold and Gord Kluzak were falling all over themselves with ridiculous glee after Joe Thornton backchecked early in a game. Who the hell is he trying to kid? Sure they aren't contenders, but in the playoffs you play against those contenders. Of course this was a measuring stick. His team got owned and he can't admit it. Different stakes? I thought everyone wants to win the Stanley Cup. I guess coming in 8th in the conference is more important all of the sudden. What a tool.

Is it my imagination or are Nieder and Marty playing the best hockey of their careers?

Will someone tell Igor Larionov it is okay to shoot the puck!?! lol Everyone in the building knows he is going to pass. Just by using the element of surprise, he could get a few goals. He is so slick and poised that he makes everyone around him better. Also, when he is in the lineup, I think the rest of the team passes better. Is this also a mirage?

BTW, this would have been a great game to call up Rob Skrlac. Who would have sat, I don't know, but Skrlac could become a folk hero by demolishing some of the Rangers punks. I hope he gets the call next time we play the Flyers and Brashear.

Now, when do we trade Gomez and Elias? :D

Answer: Sure as hell not now!!!!

Good to see Gionta showing a little more confidence. He is no Theo Fleury, in many respects, but he is a good little player. And it is great to see Christian Berglund getting chances and burying them. This kid can play and should play! Now if only Erik Rasmussen could score.
Okay, I shouldn't get greedy. But at least hit a post or two, okay Robitussin? ;)

He had 3 shots today - more than his whole first 10 games put together. Only it seemed like he was aiming for Dunham's left pad. I believe all three of them were shot from the same place, and stopped by the same pad.

Not sure the whole team passes better, but the power play sure passes better.

That is a great Lindros cartoon. Where did you find it? How true it is. Can't say I feel sorry for him. He tried to hurt a lot of players during his career. He never should have played in the game that Scott Stevens KO'd him. I can't believe he came back from that hit. Almost as amazing as Paul Kariya waking up and scoring a goal.

Stevens hits to intimidate. And he hits hard, so he is going to hurt you. But I never thought of him as dirty, just tough. If he takes the center of the ice away from players, he can change the game. Scott Stevens is everything that Barry Beck was purported to be, but wasn't. Beck was a bum, just in case you never saw him play. Stevens is a future HOFer. Case closed!

I remember Stevens with the Caps, always going after Tomas Sandstrom of the Rangers. Sandstrom would stick you and then hide behind someone. Dave Brown of the Flyers almost took his head off. Brown was a typical Flyers goon. Stevens wanted to fight him, not behead him. lol Colin White has a little of the Captain in him. Just has to learn how to control his temper, as Scott did. I think Whitey will be the future captain of the Devils when Stevens retires. Anyone agree???

BTW, did anyone hear Stan The Fish say that Scotty Niedermayer is the best all-round or two-way player in the league right now? How long does it take for these people to understand how great a talent Nieder is? I remember calling WFAN circa 1995 and saying that the only player I would consider trading Nieds for was Jagr. But I said that I wouldn't make the deal. The host couldn't believe me. Thought I was nuts. lol

He who laughs last laughs loudest or something like that!
