Game Info: 7:30 pm EST Thu Nov 13, 2003 TV: FFLA, MSG

Rick Dudley's debut as interim coach of the Florida Panthers went as well as he could have wished. His next game, though, could be decidedly more difficult.
Dudley will try to make it consecutive wins when he leads the Panthers into Continental Airlines Arena to face the defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils.

Dudley became the fifth consecutive Panthers coach to win his debut in Tuesday's 4-0 victory over Tampa Bay, following Mike Keenan, Duane Sutter, Terry Murray and Bryan Murray. Dudley, also the team's general manager, fired Keenan on Sunday, and then earned his first NHL head coaching win since Nov. 22, 1991, when he was with the Buffalo Sabres.

Roberto Luongo made 26 saves for his first shutout of the season and Niklas Hagman, Andreas Lilja, Jaroslav Bednar and Valeri Bure scored for the Panthers, who snapped a seven-game winless streak against Tampa Bay.

``I think it's satisfying,'' Dudley said. ``We're going to try and keep this not too high, not too low. We won a game. It's the start of hopefully many we'll win together, and that's what we're going to build toward.''

Luongo also had shutouts in the Florida debuts of Keenan and Sutter.

``It's great to be able to get two points for Dud,'' Luongo said. ``But in a guy's first game, guys always put on a great show. It's a matter of doing it game in and game out.''

Florida was without leading scorer Viktor Kozlov, who missed the game because of a facial injury sustained Saturday night at St. Louis. Lilja was injured when he was checked in open ice by Tampa Bay defenseman Cory Sarich. Although the exact nature of the injury wasn't immediately known, Dudley said Lilja might miss some action.

Dudley will now try to lead the Panthers to their second win over the Devils in as many tries this season. Florida edged New Jersey on the road 2-1 late last month.

The Devils are unbeaten in their last seven (5-0-2) following a 2-2 tie with Buffalo in Rochester, N.Y. on Wednesday.

New Jersey has been exceptional on the road this season, allowing just seven goals and going 4-0-2. The Devils have been below average at home, winning three of seven games.

Jamie Langenbrunner, who had a goal and an assist Wednesday, has three goals and an assist in his last four games.

Got the MSG feed from Center Ice tonight, and I must say, that blue horizontal line up top is really annoying...

Devils smell blood as Luongo made a solid point blank stop on a Pando blast... So far good pressure.

Devils outshooting the Cats 9-1 14 minutes in...

I agree with ya. It is distracting to look at. Whatever happened to translucent bars and eye pleasing GUI's?

I missed it. Pretty horrible stuff I trust?!? God does this team need Larionov to stay HEALTHY and not just for the love of the PP.

Not that its necessarily new but...

My thanks to D'Arcy McGrath and "Trevor" for the following on Scott Gomez: "Calgary's play by play guy on Radio Fan960 mentioned that the latest rumour has the Flames and Devils discussing a move that would see Conroy and Gomez switch cities as the principals. He also mentioned that coach and GM Darryl Sutter skipped practice yesterday to "heat up the phone lines".

How did the new lines look? Radio guys kept saying that Elias was on top of his game and that Friesen looked pretty good alongside Gomez.

Left work just as the 3rd period started, traffic jam takes me 40 minutes to get home......and the game is over by the time I get to my TV.

New lines looked ok at times and great at others. Elias had some postgame comments with Matt Laughlin pretty much echoing what every other linemate of Larionov has said this season as far as having to be more aware of that pass you aren't expecting to get and boom its there. Friesen and Gionta both seemed to benefit well from these changes. All 3 of Berglund's shots were good ones. He played well in this one, but could have thrown the body more. Didn't even notice Rasmussen out there.

I liked Elias on the right side of Larionov and Berglund. Brylin could have just as easily played on that line, but I was glad to see Christian get to play with the likes of Larionov and Elias. I hope Burns keeps this line, and the Friesen-Gomez-Gionta line together for a few games to see if they can establish some chemistry.

Finally, Gionta scores!!! Too bad it wasn't last night, but I will take it. If he doesn't score, he is a liability to some degree. When Grant Marshall is healthy, he will have to platoon with Gionta, depending on who we play.

Martin and Hale were solid as a pair, which bodes very well. Marty was steady in goal. He looks pretty confident of late.

I thought Rasmussen played ok. I wonder why Burns chooses to play Erik over Mike Rupp on our "fourth line?" Rasmussen had a few chances, but he can't put them away. Maybe that was why Brylin was on that line, to try to get Big Erik going. :dunno:

Very solid game. Nice to have that 3-0 lead at one point. Keep Marty smiling!!! :D

Good win. Now on to the Rangers. Maybe someone will have the guts to crosscheck Mark Messier across his ugly mug. ;) Never too late to exact revenge for his stick across the face of Doug Gilmour in 1997. Hey, I carry a grudge. :) I think we did get the Rangers back by winning two Stanley Cups, but I don't think anyone ever did diddley to Mess. Time to mess up Mess.
How dare he move ahead of Gordie Howe! :joker:

Gionta's goal was great...a real seeing-eye goal that rivaled the shot that Luke Skywalker took to blow up the Death Star.
Rasmussen looked okay, I guess...I was surprised that Rupp was not in the game. But I guess it's better to save him for the Rangers.
I am a lot happier now than I was last night about this time.

I don't agree with this at all. Gionta takes a beating every game and still crashes the net. He now has 3 goals which is tied with Elias, Niedermayer and Pandolfo for third on the team. If anyone is platooning with Marshall it should be Rasmussen, but I can see Berglund getting the short end of the stick along with Rupp.

Heard the 2nd on radio. Lots of "Whooooo"-ing, "Little G"-ing, and "GOAL SCORING MACHINE JAAAAAAAAAAY PANDOLFO"-ing. Saw the 3rd on TV. Ehhh, wish I saw the second.

The Devils played well. These new line combos, I think, are doing the trick for Elias, Gomez, Friesen, Gionta, et. al. Hopefully they'll be as effective on Saturday as they were tonight.
