All I have to say about Matt Loughlin is, I've never seen a head so big on shoulders that small. So not having to deal with that visual for another season will be comforting.
Marty's Better 08-01-2006, 06:01 PM It's not Mike Miller, but we could have done worse....
Somewhere in space...
"The New Jersey Devils are the 1995 **BOOM** STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!"
...is ringing.

Good point - still heard but at least not seen.... :teach:
crashlanding 08-01-2006, 06:08 PM NOOOOOOOOOOO
I can't believe it, so many options and we go with Laughlin?
He's worse than Hennessy, Miller, Doc/Chico radio simulcast, that guy that was brought up about a month ago that the Avs were looking at?
Sheesh. Who's the color guy? FISCHLER???
as someone who's moving out of FSNY reach this news is doubly depressing.
Captain Lou 08-01-2006, 07:12 PM Well the only good thing I can say about this is that at least he won't be doing the TV PBP anymore when Doc is off working for NBC. He is truly an awful announcer, but he and Stan are funny together and I will miss that.
DevilFisch 08-01-2006, 07:13 PM I don't mind Matt so much, but I seem him a LOT for some reason. Hosting team-by-team discussions prior to the NBA Draft on NBATV, doing NY Red Bulls telecasts, etc. I guess his stock is on the rise, might as well give it to him. Though, I'd rather have Miller; I think it could be worse.
And the Maven as the color guy would be FAN-tastic.
Colin Whites Eye 08-01-2006, 07:39 PM i dont like laughlin at all....
HBK27 08-01-2006, 07:42 PM Remind me not to go driving during Devils games.
I like Matt doing the intermissions, but PBP is painful. Wonder who subs in for Doc now?

My $$$ is on Dano.
DevilsFan38 08-01-2006, 08:49 PM Ugh. And I have to listen to most of the games on the radio. Why didn't they bring back Miller? Or keep Hennessey?
I like Laughlin as a studio guy, but I am not a fan of his PBP.
NJDraft 08-01-2006, 09:44 PM Laughlin is connected somehow and it almost seems like play-by-play seems like an afterthought. Game presentation seems more important to the broadcast. I don't want to knock the guy but it just seems that they didn't go for the best man for the job.
David Puddy 08-01-2006, 10:58 PM I like Laughlin as a studio guy, but I am not a fan of his PBP.It's not easy to do play-by-play of hockey games. Loughlin would only do about five or six games a year. When his fulltime job is that, he will be much more fluid in his call.
fIREnIcE 08-01-2006, 11:06 PM My $$$ is on Dano.
I doubt it, he did a good johb this year onb tv but prob is too green just to make the jump to pbp......but who is doing color on the radio?? Maybe they will put Dano on WFAN as a color eventually to make the jump to colorman on TV for Newark.
He would be a welcome addition. I would personally pack Chicos bags.
jkrdevil 08-01-2006, 11:12 PM I thought Dano said he wasn't interested in being the new radio color guy when the news of the radio guys being let go came out?
My guess Dano becomes a part of the pre game intermission team with Stan.
crashlanding 08-01-2006, 11:15 PM And on color we have....
ROBBIE FTOREK
haha, jk, but Lou did say he was being "reassigned"
BigBully4 08-02-2006, 11:06 AM You guys are unbelieveable. Give the guy a chance. All of us sit here and act like we can do a better job. "I hate Hennessy. I hate Chico." Want some more cheese with your wine? Loughlin has been doing play by play and color commentary for this organization and many others for years. He's earned the respect of the organization (not an easy thing to do) and Lamoriello, and that's enough. The Devils like low-key kind of guys, and Matt fits the bill.
He's good on TV, brings credibility to the job, and knows the players and the organization inside out. If you don't like him, turn off the volume. Or spend some dough and get the Center Ice package if you live out of state so you can watch televised games.
The pessimism on these boards is exhausting.
forceten 08-02-2006, 11:53 AM No offense, BigBully4, but I *COULD* do a better job.
Matt Laughlin stinks. His play-by-play sounds like someone doing a high school game. He has no passion, no excitement. He's the anti-Doc.
Further, his head looks like a giant blackberry. We call him blackberry head.
He should be back on TV3 doing Essex County sports.
He stinks, and I don't like him.
ghoti 08-02-2006, 12:07 PM I actually think Matty is a good, professional studio guy and a fine interviewer.
However, think of Mike Miller's call of the cup clincher in 1995.
Could Matt Laughlin paint a picture like that? Could he make the hair on the back of your neck stand up?
This is an example of the "Peter Principle" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_principle), and it isn't a good thing for Devils fans.
crashlanding 08-02-2006, 03:29 PM NHL pbp is the hardest, by far, of all the sports. I would rather get a minor league play-by-play man and promote him to the NHL. That's how all great pbp guys get their start, not by arguing with Stan Fischler. Laughlin has the background of a presenter, not a guy in the booth and his fill-ins for Doc prove that.
The scariest part is, with Doc getting up there in years, are they grooming Matt to replace him?

:help:
JerryGigantic 08-02-2006, 08:01 PM Thought he stunk as the doofus straight man to the Maven and, despite knowing the team, doesn't seem to possess a shred of insight about the game, often staring blank faced at Stan the man as he made his crazy points.
Not a pessimist, in fact, closer to a true believer, but this chioce STINKS.
I guess im pretty fortunate to never have seen/heard him :biglaugh:
NJDraft 08-02-2006, 08:29 PM In the cable era, I'm get the feeling like that clubs look at their radio broadcasts as pr vehicles for the team. These guys shouldn't be hired to be salesmen for the club, even though that's the secondary part of the job. Some of us have to listen to FAN. P-B-P should be considered as priority #1.
If Miller was available and in good shape he should have got the gig.
As for color guy, I hate to say Dano blew it, but I think he did. I really question whether Laughlin was Lou's choice. It will be interesting to see if the #2 guy will be. I don't think a former Devil will neccessarily be the choice.
Tbg1515 08-02-2006, 10:53 PM Everyone seems to bash everything the devils do with there team, Matty Laughlin is not that bad, i mean we are spoiled having a guy like Doc doing PBP on tv, Personally im glad Matty is getting this shot..........Maybe he'll be paired with a combo of Dano & Stevens, if scotty wants to do that.......I would really like to hear that!

yeah that would be great.....but isnt Scotty personallity a little geared towards coaching, hes not the schmoozer that Dano is. If Dano is back on the wagon and committed this his chance to get primed for TV, which i really think he could be our JD.
Who doesnt love Dano even ranger fans have a soft spot for that toothless grin?
HF_Rangers 08-04-2006, 12:17 AM I'm surprised Loughlin got the job, but he's been in the biz for a long time and he's finally got his shot after reporting from the sidelines for so long. Good to see a Seton Hall guy as an NHL play-by-play announcer!
