If Ronaldo were able to follow Podolski's example and shut his mouth he may have indeed won it.

Very true, I'm no fan of Ronaldo, but it seemed like he had a bigger impact then Podolski, but maybe that just cuz Klose was scoring left and right

This award is a tin pot one.Its a sop to the Germans.Podolski has pace & aggression but his close control isnt great & his finishing at times is woeful when compared to the likes of Klinsmann & Rumenigge at the same age.

As I put down of the very young players Fabregas & Messi have better close control & skill levels.Fabregas awareness is better than Messi at this stage too.

Same goes for FIFAs world cup XXIII .Terry in as a centre back ? :dunno:
If Klose wins the Golden Boot as is likely it doesnt mean hes the best striker in the world.Hes certainly improved his link up play & hes pretty efficient but he isnt the best in the world.

Blatter :dunce: loves handing out these awards which is why there are so many of them.

I don't think Podolski was all that impressive, and I'm a big fan of Germany. Most of his offensive output was due to exquisite plays set up by Klose. Thank god he finally scored a few because for awhile, he was missing some extremely easy chances.

Klose was the revelation for Germany at this World Cup. Dangerous pretty much every time he touched the ball. It became obvious after awhile which is why the more difficult opponents keyed on him. Despite this, he still managed to create the most dangerous opportunities for Germany (i.e. Schneider's open shot against Italy).

Giving it to Messi would be pointless given that he wasn't even trusted enough to play more than a handful of minutes in the knock-out stages. Argentina has a lot of depth, and it's just his bad luck as he'd certainly have a greater role on a different team.

I'd have to go with Cristiano Ronaldo given that he was Portugal's most dangerous player on a consistent level throughout the tournament, despite his lack of finish. Without him, Portugal would have been even more anemic than they actually were.

However, the anti-Ronaldo campaign obviously factored in here.

I think you underestimate the intelligence of english fans. You would rarely meet one that says Rooney should have won this award, so they're not going to make it obvious by voting for him. :shakehead

I doubt Ribery would have won it anyway Evilo, Fifa is all about marketing and having a guy like Ribery win does not give them the greatest PR. Not because of the way he plays but unfortunately the way he looks. You won't see Adidas/Nike trying to sign him for the same reason. I think it's disgraceful but it's the way society is these days.

Anyway, it's too bad the cut off date was 85, because Ribery sure was the best "young" player. But I guess you're not young anymore after 21.

On performances alone, Ronaldo and Podolski have been more impressive than Ribery, who has only started to perform after his goal and was neither here nor there against Portugal.

I agree. Ribery is extremely inconsistent and << Ronaldo & Podolski

I read somewhere that a huge part of why Ronaldo lost the award was his lack of sportmanship (especially his part in the Rooney sending off). Correct me if Im wrong but wasnt Podolski one of the germans who literally petted the ref when he sent off a swede in the first knockout stage? Its a very even vote, and i guess Podolski won because hes german. Fair enough

Quiet Robert

Ronaldo only has himself to blame for not winning this award. Had he not been such an unsportsmanlike tool he would have won.

Personally I thought Ronaldo actually was the best young player in this WC. Fantastic runs, great moves and he was a threat everytime he touched the ball. He was one of Portugal's best players. However, he was also one of the biggest *****es in the tournament. Had he played like a man he would have ran away with the award.

Evilo

Well count me in the (apparent) minority here.
Sure Ronaldo was dangerous.
Sure he made things happen, or at least seemingly.

But what precise dangerous action was he part of?
What goal was he part of?

He hit the bar against Angola.
He scored a penalty kick against Iran.
He had a dangerous free kick against France.

That's about it. He was dangerous at most 5 times directly with a dangerous shot or a dangerous pass.
On the other hand, he ruined about 10 plays by slowing down the counter attack by making 5 dekes before either losing the ball or sending a lateral pass.

Ronaldo seemed like Portugal's most dangerous player because his style is flashy.
I think Portugal's best player in this WC was Figo.

Sampe
07-08-2006, 03:59 PM
Since we're naming overaged players, Philipp Lahm deserves a mention. Sure, he might have been even better two years ago, but he's still only 22 and despite his injured arm was once again one of the best full backs around. In fact, I think he had a somewhat better tournament than Ribery (so far).

But anyways, Lionel Messi was easily the most impressive young player of the World Cup. He's just something special.

I agree. It was his to lose and he did just that. Podolski was good but not as a set up guy like Ronaldo. Ronaldo can set up a play or shoot to score, while Podolski was mainly set up to shoot.

However, the right guy won since sportsmanship counts as well.

There are very few players that have failed to make even the slightest impact in a game so your point is irrelevant. He's not been good enough to make him a possible choice for an award, despite what you say. I also note that every single pundit i have heard in this World Cup agrees with me too. He's been a non-entity tonight too, but of course, you must be right.....

Ribery isn't a bad player, but he's not even close to being as good as you make him out to be. He's far too lightweight and spends far too long chasing his man rather than beating him.

Messi was really impressiv...too bad he didn't play more minutes.

Yes. He and Cesc are easily the best youngsters that were in this tournament. Neither of them received a proper chance though. Still as you'll see in the future with their club sides, both Cesc and Messi will be amongst the best of their generation.

I haven't seen too much, but I think it would've been wrong to give that award to an egoistic top-notch diver. Ronaldo may be the most talented guy of them (besides Messi), but if he is the best "rookie" -- good night football !

Messi was really impressiv...too bad he didn't play more minutes.

i agree. but ronaldo was still best young player. he could be really great if he'd stop diving every minute.

pekerman should have played messi more. argentina was most impressive of all, until they lost. pekerman lost them the match. still don't know why he took out riquelme.

if ribery was elgible, he should have been 2nd or 3rd. he was good but he also missed several open nets.

Ribéry is fine young player. I like his constant drift to go forward, I also like his dribble and his speed. What I don't like is the fact that his timing of when to pass and when not is extremely off. He also has no shot whatsoever and lacks accuracy in both passing/crossing and shooting whenever he approaches the box. Also feel he often does too much.

It also appears that Ronaldo did not endear himself to FIFA's version of the Oscar committee. The manner in which the best young player is selected is a farce. The fans select their top three candidates on FIFA's website (which ended up being Ronaldo, Messi and Valencia) and the technical group adds three candidates of their own, namely Podolski. Ultimately it's the technical study group that gets the final say. But their final selection really isn't all that surprising considering Holger Osieck, a German, is the head the Technical Study Group. It's also comprised of 13 other former players and coaches who have enjoyed German hospitality for the last month.

Podolski had a good tournament, but if scoring three goals in seven games (and none in his last three games) is enough to earn him an award, then shame on FIFA for even coming up with this new prize. Podolski is an out-and-out striker, it's his job to score goals. He struggled for form in his first two games before scoring a meaningless goal against Ecuador. His shining moment came in the first 20 minutes of Germany's 2-0 win over Sweden. But he'll be most remembered for missing a sitter in extra-time against Italy. If you were to remove Podolski from the German national team, they still boast a formidable lineup. But if you were to take Ronaldo off the Portuguese squad, their starting 11 becomes mediocre.

I believe the exact contrary.
Without his useless dekes, Portugal would not waste as much time on lots of plays, and they would be collective.

Ronaldo is one of the main reasons why any striker won't score huge amount of goals in key games : he wants to be the scorer anytime the game is of importance.
He tries to show off, and he wastes plenty of opportunities.
