The list of the 10 finalists for MVP of the WC is out.

For Italy :
Cannavaro
Pirlo
Zambrotta
Buffon

For France :
Henry
Vieira
Zidane

For Germany :
Klose
Ballack

For Portugal :
Maniche

I have no idea why Ballack is here, I think he was sub-par in this WC and Pirlo shouldn't be there either.
Can't complain about the other 8.

Ballack doesn't deserve to be on this list.

If they had Grosso for Italy i'd have to destroy them. :)

It's a bit sad that at this point we can't even put one player ahead of the pack since no one has really stood out. The quality of football at this WC has really been piss poor.

Zidane has been pretty huge in the knockout stage. If he has a big final, he'll win the MVP.
Cannavaro, Vieira and Buffon are also very very good candidates.

I don't think the quality is piss poor at all.
I simply think the defenses have been dominant.

he's now eliminated two teams! Watch him France....

BTW, Pirlo deserves to be there. His contribution is understated, but he pulls the strings in that Italian midfield, and has confined the likes of totti to a lesser role.

I have to say Cannavaro though, Zidane a close second. I'll switch it if Zizou lights up Italy sunday

I agree with Cannavaro, he's been an absolute rock for Italy. Italy have only conceded that Zaccardo own-goal and Cannavaro has been a huge part of that, they haven't missed Nesta at all.

Maniche? I think he was better in 2004. And didn't dive as much.

Zidane being voted the MVP would make the best story, so he has a good chance if France wins.

Cannavaro is the most deserving candidate right now, but he still needs another solid performance in the final.

Buffon has been the most flawless player of the tournament, but hardly the most valuable (albeit his leadership and mere presence has undoubtedly had a positive effect on Italy's defense). He needs a brilliant performance in the final.

Vieira will need to clearly outplay Zidane in the final, since attacking players always have an edge in these kind of votes.

Klose's case will suffer from not making the final, but a goal or two in his last match and average performances from the other main candidates could help him win.

The others on the list don't quite compare to these 5 IMO.

I feel Zambrotta has been HUGE.

What did Zambrotta do to earn consideration besides that goal against Ukraine? Cannavaro has been much better

How so?

Evilo

Zambrotta has been a constant danger for the other side's defense, AND he's been rock solid defensively.
He's both a winger and a defenseman, but he does both jobs equally well.
Best sideback of the tournament in front of Sagnol, Miguel, Cole and Grosso.

BTW, he also assisted on Toni's goal in that game.

I agree. He's been the best right back in the tournament, which doesn't really surprise me. Zambrotta is rarely anything short of world class.

I just think he's Italy's 3rd option behind Cannavaro and Buffon right now, and if Italy is to win I seriously doubt either of them performing poorly in the final.

Yeah I agree. Not many players are truly playing to the best of their ability. I guess maybe Zidane gets it for his revival.

The MVP will be the captain of the team that wins the tournament ie. Zidane if France wins or Cannavaro if Italy wins.

I think that depends on alot especially if Buffon play a great game and Italy wins it would be hard not to give it to him

I agree with this. I also think that if France wins, Zidane should be the MVP. He's been so good this time around. So smooth and he makes everything look so easy.

In 2002 the gave the MVP award to Kahn who didn't win the WC so it's not really a must to give it to a Cup winner. You could see Klose winning it if he plays a good game and scores again in the 3rd place match

Evilo

They gave it to Kahn because he single handedly put them in the final.
You can't say that of any player in the final right now.

Cannavarro is the MVP this far, and it isn't even close for me. He has been completely flawless.

Klose has also been very good, not only in the goalscoring department but also as a target player and setup man.

The french stars have looked good after the group stage but looked poor the first two games.

Zidane was really good against Brazil, garbage in the first round, and ok in the other two games.

That's not the performance of an MVP.

I guess you have to give it to Cannavaro, he was the most consistent player throughout the WC.

Zidane - for grabbing an unspired team by the throat and taking it to the finals.

I completely disagree. Ballack was immense for Germany and has been the heart and soul of everything they've done. Pirlo has proven himself to be an extremely classy midfielder in this tournament too. I'd say both were better than Vieira (awesome in one game but quiet in the rest) and Zambrotta.

Undoubtedly you'll argue with this so i'll concede that both of those have been great, but not up to the level of Ballack or Pirlo.

You could at least make that argument for Zidane. You could also make that argument for Buffon IMHO. That's why I think whichever team wins, their best player (Zidane or Buffon respectively) should win.

Very much so.

1. Canavarro
2. Zidane
3. Buffon
4. Pirlo
5. Klose

I would've liked to have seen Miguel instead of Maniche. Miguel was spectacular at this WC. Creative and a defensive giant in the back.

I thought he was the worst player out there against Italy and uninspiring in other games.

Here's how I see it.

1. Cannavaro
2. Zidane
3. Pirlo
4. Buffon
5. Vieira

I would also include Thuram, I think he has been outstanding.

I agree with Zidane and Cannavaro being 1 and 2, with Cannavaro being 1, but I would give the nod to Zidane if he plays well in the final and France wins.

Admittidly I haven't watched every single game like I wanted to, but that's how I see it.

3. Klose.
4. Ricardo (not listed but huge).
5. Buffon.

-I also believe Ballack was instrumental to Germany, but isn't a top MVP candidate.

I don't, but even if i did, it doesn't mean i can't respect most of your side.

Anyway, i've gotta change that, not enough Frenchmen in it
