Ball is in Lowe's court
Comrie camp offers to sign for less than qualifying offer to expedite a trade

By ROBIN BROWNLEE, EDMONTON SUN

ORONTO -- Mike Comrie is willing to put his money where his mouth is - if it will convince Edmonton Oilers GM Kevin Lowe to trade him sooner rather than later.

Agent Rich Winter says Comrie is willing to sign a contract for less than the $1.13-million US qualifying offer tendered by the Oilers last summer with any team that obtains him.

Comrie, in fact, has talked to at least two of the teams Lowe has been in trade discussions with, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Atlanta Thrashers - both of whom have offered Lowe a package of players - and told them the very same thing.

We can easily afford this salary and give up Scott Gomez in return for the priviledge. Win-win situation for both teams. Lou would be foolish not to jump all over this one. I'll drive Gomez to Skyreach myself if I have to do it.

It would be great to see Comrie in NJ, but I don't know if Lou would go after him. Would Lou view Comrie as a "me me" type player? Also since he's holding out, does Lou really want another player who plays with "money" as a factor?

Like the Kyle McLaren situation a year ago, Comrie's not holding out on account of $$$ with the Edmonton Oilers. He's not happy with being scapegoated in the media for their first round playoff loss from what I've read. More of an issue of a guy feeling he's been disrespected and unappreciated by his own organization I think. We need more goal scoring as our current centers don't offer much in the way of this at all.

Agreed. The Comrie/Oil thing is not about Comrie being a selfish player. It is about Comrie being held unfairly accountable for the loss the Oilers suffered last year. Scott Gomez is a good fit in Edmonton and Comrie is a great fit in New Jersey.

Edmonton get a very similar player back at a reasonable price. Gomez is not as physical and may lack the gamebreaking abilities that Comrie has. I think that these two players hold similar values and if Lou were to overlook the possibility of Comrie coming here, I'd be surprised to say the least.

Comrie is on HNIC right now telling his side of the story. He maintains the Oilers management were rather disappointed with his play levelling off. Good stuff here. He'd look great in a NJ jersey.

Gomez and Laine for Comrie

Edmonton would get another speedster and possibly a linemate for Rita, who played with Laine at the WJC. Laine made the team that year adn missed it the next, very odd.

Before the season started I wouldn't have done it, but his play has just been frustrating me more and more. That being said I jump all over that, but the Devils should make sure he'll sign asap after he is traded.

I don't know what's wrong with Gomer. I'm so disappointed in him, I really thought that he would break out this year after all he went through last year. I know we're going to look bad, he'll score 80 points as soon as we trade him, but I don't care anymore. Yeah, do it. Gomer and a prospect for Comrie.

Friesen-Comrie-Langenbrunner
Pandolfo-Madden-Gionta
Rasmussen-Rupp-Stevenson/Brylin/Berglund

I like those lines.

Gomez had another assist tonight, now with 1 goal and 8 assists. He hasn't been playing poorly, so I don't see any need to trade him for Comrie.

Friesen on the other hand...

Friesen is a streaky player but I wouldn't deal him for a player thats considerably smaller than he is. We don't need to trade another player over 6 ft for a another smallish forward. However, if we trade a shrimp for a shrimp, well its worth it more.

Gomer's "assist" was a faceoff win to Christian Berglund. Berglund passed it back to Stevens, who scored on a weak shot from the point. I didn't see the game (had to catch it on the radio) did Gomez have a strong game besides the assist?

He looked good tonight I thought. Hit the post in the 1st period with a rocket of a blast and led the team with 4 shots on goal. He seemed to be flying in the 3rd period.

Good, I'd much rather have Gomez break out then trade him.

I think I'd rather see Elias on a line with Comrie if he were to come here. I think that he and Elias would be great. My top 2 lines would be:

Elias-Comrie-Langs
Freisen-Rupp-Berglund

I'm curious as to what all the fuss about Comrie is? Do you guys see something I don't?
