NJ_Devil_Boy 11-07-2003, 09:03 PM I know he left in a messy situation, but wow, already 5 G and 8 PTs. I remember hearing his name in the World Junior Championships, and thought he would turn out alright. Good for him I guess after bouncing around on a couple teams.

Mike Keenan seems to hae a lot of confidence in him at this point. He's getting good minutes on the PP.
I Hate Tie DOMI 11-07-2003, 09:10 PM Sheldon Souray is doing pretty well for himself too this year.

Does anyone think Hale and Martin still get the huge signing bonuses and pressured to skip their last year of college, if it weren't for the Van Ryn incident, or are they unrelated?

No because Hale and Martin weren't trying to do what Van Ryn did. They were going back to college to play if they didn't sign their contracts.

Its a shame we traded him for what....Malakhov?
That can't be right.

OK, I thought maybe Lou might be taking preventative measures to keep from getting burned again. I know I may come off as being down on them being up, but I would hate to see their confidence shot by having them up too soon. Lou knows best.

Yeah, I was a Souray when he was traded.
If I remember this right (from Pierre McGuire), the original deal was Souray & WHITE (your favourite player  ). Lou then said he couldn't because he promised White's parents he wouldn't be traded. So Lou threw in Josh DeWolf. :yo:

It's risky, but since Lou doesn't sign FA and 4 regular d-man left (Albelin was "gone" at that time) in the summer, I think he had to sign Hale and Martin.

All I have to say to that is....crap.
Why wouldn't White parents want him traded to Montreal which is closer to home? Makes zero sense.
Thats probably going to go down as one of Lou's worst trades in my books.

I guess I thought it was Giroux' turn and I never thought Tommy was going anywhere, except maybe scouting or coaching. The Brown signing was a surprise to me.

I see Brown and Albelin as safety guys in case Martin or Hale or even both fail. I would imagine Martin and Hale will both burnout slighty by February. It's not their fault, but NCAA hockey is no where close to the NHL level of play. It seems Burns (or even Lou) is giving Martin and Hale every chance to play in the NHL, seeing as Brown has only played in 3 games so far.

Well, forgiving their mistakes on the ice, they seem pretty solid as far their lack of nervousness goes, so far. I don't see them having the emotional breakdowns that White does and Stevens did earlier in his career. Overconfidence doesn't seem to be a problem either. Would like to see their +/- improve, but that goes for the whole team this early in the season.

I thought Malakhov was very important cog in our 2000 Cup run. He was a real luxury to have on the 3rd pair with Colin White. That was probably my favorite Devils' team to watch.
And I think because of how well Malakhov worked out in the short time he was here, Lou's gone out of his way at least twice now to get an offensive minded defenseman for the 3rd pairing (Zyuzin and Tverdovsky).

I don't think it was a bad trade at all. We won the cup that year, we ended going back there the year after so its not like its hurt us long term. Besides Souray wasn't exactly setting the ice on fire either you know. Besides if thats true then he didn't give up White which was the best part about it. I think Malakhov did pretty good in the short time he was here. So maybe in the off-season you could have we needed Souray, but the rookies are playing solid and so is Tommy, so it wasn't a bad trade at all. Considering too how White has developed now being given more responsibility.

You obviously don't know how I feel about White. Its too bad he didn't get traded IMO. :D
Deathlock 11-08-2003, 10:41 AM Oh yea i don't. Well ok.

That was my favorite Devil team to watch too. Malakhov, unlike Tverdovsky last season fit in very well on the third pairing that year.
jimmyc 11-10-2003, 12:17 PM Some people seem to have forgotten that Malakhov helped the Devils win the Cup in 2000. I don't know if they would have won with Souray in the lineup then.
Also let's not get carried away by Souray's start. He's been constantly hurt the last couple of years and Montreal hasn't gotten much out of that trade to date.

that's true, and if what you'r saying is true that white was suppose to be part of the deal, then i hate lou for being nice for the first time in his life. i'd gladly take white over dykhuis or traverse(hamiltons version of orr ha) i wish that would have been the deal that went down because at the time i was disapointed that we got a d man who didn't even play for the habs that season for malakhov
