I have several choices:

Messi (Argentina)
Gilardino (Italy)
Podolski (Germany)
Torres (Spain)

Evilo

My french vote will be Ribery.
Few know him other than by name.

Messi has already broken out, so...

"Breakout" is a pretty broad definition, but for Oranje I think Robin van Persie can have a breakout tournament much like Robben had in 2004.

Although Messi has already broken out (both on a world and club stage), I'll pick him to RE-break out.

I love his first few steps... unreal.

Yeah, Van Persie could break out. Depends on how long Holland last in the tourney though. I remember a goal he scored for Arsenal this season, the footwork as amazing. He will be a guy to watch out for.

I know Messi has already established himself as a pretty impressive player, but isnt he still a sub on the Argentinian team? I could be wrong though.

Ribery for me too, I have only read about him before but I really liked what I saw from him yesterday.

He is overrated, Sweden has nothing good to use as offensive midfielder... Svensson or Källström... bleeh.

I like Joe Cole and Aaron Lennon's chances, real talents that could make a splash - both are in good form. Ribery is on their level too.

I think this will be a continuation of Euro 2004 where the real breakouts were C.Ronaldo, Rooney, Robben.. those three plus Messi are probably the top 4 young stars.

I know Pekerman already proved to be an idiot, but that's probably too much even for him..
only Evilo, and having Giuly available, could put Messi on the bench. :D

Yes he's a sub. He's not 100% recovered from his injury. Pekerman prefers Saviola as Crespo's partner. Messi will come on in the late stages for his creativity and explosiveness.

That's what I thought.
I think within a couple games you'll see Messi become a starter.

i hope this is for precautional reasons related with his injury..
Saviola should be the thrid option behind Messi and Tevez.
I bet Pekerman will throw in Messi in place for Saviola as soon as Argentina will be in trouble.

I like Behrami or Barnetta for Switzerland.
And I've heard good things about Mexico's Guardado.

Behrami is not a bad call, but for what i saw recently he wasn't made a starter by the Swiss national coach. :shakehead

A player that could breakthrough, on the international stage at least, is Toni. He could do some damages against those other teams' defenses in his group.

Speaking of already star players, Kaka.
People will be waiting for Ronaldinho and against that Brazilian team i doubt opponents will be able to check him as close as needed. I hope he won't be used too far from the net, but i am confident.

I think Kaka is going to play splendid, but he has already broken out and then some. He is also my favourite footballer so I may be biased. :)

What number is he wearing for Brazil this year? I have his number 8 jersey but it looks like he changed it to 23.

He is listed as number 8. It could be a case where he wore a different number during friendlies. That often happens, as Gerrard and Crouch each wore number 9 during the last two friendlies, but Rooney will most likely assume that number during the World Cup.

I know he's already broken out this year in the CL, but I'm going with Cesc Fabregas. He could prove to be Spain's MVP, IMO. He was just outstanding against Juventus back in the quarterfinals.

If he plays.

Spanish media is putting a lot of pressure on Aragones to play him, but it's looking like it's going to be Senna and Xabi.

Behrami is not a bad call, but for what i saw recently he wasn't made a starter by the Swiss national coach. :shakehead The problem with Behrami is that there would rather be an available spot at RD than RM. In midfield, the competition is much bigger. Vogel, Barnetta and to a certain extent Cabanas are pretty much set, and the final 1-2 spots are left for Wicky, Yakin, Behrami, Gygax, Dzemaili and D. Degen.

you mean he will finally not get tripped before he gets into scoring situation

Here's hoping, he gets a lot of bad press for diving but he has improved in that aspect but opponents do get away with alot because of his bad repuatation. He also must keep his temper in check as in the last two exhibition games he has gone off on opponents who seemingly foul him and he gets no call which gets him mad and racing to tackle the opposing ball handler for revenge. Scolari told him to cool that or he goes on the bench

I'm banking on him to become an elite defender after WC2006

Ya, he had a terrific game for Mexico. Even played some mid-field during the game.
Strong player

yeah I know he was already a star but if he continue like that he could surpass Nedved and become a superstar, especially with arsenal next year!
