Niedermayer21 06-02-2006, 01:10 PM I know I got bashed for proposing that the Devils sign Chris Chelios. Well, Detroit signed him, so they must know something. He would have been good with the young defensemen for a year, but that will not be.
I was wondering if we could trade for Adrian Aucoin or Sami Salo? We need a cannon on the point for the PP. Also, if Aucoin is healthy, he can play some serious minutes.
I am not thinking in terms of contracts until I know the cap number and how we can fill it, as the new owner does not seem to be frugal and may let or make Lou spend some money.
If we cannot bring back Jason Arnott, I would be satisfied with Mike Peca. If not him, then Manny Malhotra might make a nice 4th line center or left wing.
Also, Lars Jonsson was not signed by Boston. I have not seen him play, but if he is finally playing up to his potential, I would like to bring him onboard.
Here is a lineup I was toying with the other day:
Elias--Arnott--Langenbrunner
Parise--Gomez--Gionta
Pandolfo--Madden--Tallackson
Brylin--Malhotra/Peca--Marshall
Wiemer and Janssen
Rafalski--Matvichuk
Martin--White
Eddie Jovanovski???--Hale
Lukowich
Marty
Wade Flaherty or Scott Clemmensen
Like I said, hard to predict lineup until we know what the cap will be.
As for the new head coach, I would go with Johnny Mac and if Bobby Carpenter returns to the organization, he could be an assistant. I would love Ted Nolan, but that will never happen. One name to think about: Alain Vignault. Where is he? Another name to consider is Bill Barber, who I detest since he was a Flyer. Last three names for the time being: Butch Goring, Tony Granato and Jacques Demers. If Pat Burns recovers, he can be an assistant, but I don't want him to return to head coaching duties until he is 100 percent for a few years. I just wish him well.
Feedback please. And make it civil. Thank you. :yo:
BTW, I was thinking of changing my name to King_Marty_Brodeur and dumping Niedermayer27. Whadda ya think?
As for the Draft, Bobby Sanguinetti in the first round and Claude Giroux in the second. Lou will have to trade up for Sanguinetti, but he will be worth it. Giroux could fall to us in the second round. If Dennis Persson drops, I would take him in the third round. BTW, is he Stefan Persson's son?
Adios. Later...
David Puddy 06-02-2006, 01:36 PM Like I said, hard to predict lineup until we know what the cap will be.That's all fine, but your team looks like it has a payroll over $50 million. I read on TSN.ca yesterday that they anticipate the cap to be about $43-$45 million.
If I was going to get an old guy who played for the Red Wings in 2005-06, I would rather have Brendan Shanahan. He scored 40 Goals and had 81 Points in 82 GP.
The Little Swede 06-02-2006, 02:23 PM If Dennis Persson drops, I would take him in the third round. BTW, is he Stefan Persson's son?

I highly doubt he will be left in the third round. No he's not Stefan Persson's son.

Man how awesome would that be, Shanny full circle?
DevilsFan 06-02-2006, 03:22 PM Regarding the draft, I would use Sergei Brylin (thanks for the memories Sarge, but he's not worth what he makes anymore) and trade up for a checking defenseman, preferably a big one (6'2" 210 type) with a strong shot and quick legs; that is where we are weakest right now in the organization.
The first thing on my offseason to-do list would be to somehow, someway get rid of Malakhov's, McGillis', and Mogilny's salaries. If we can't this team is screwed next year. Everything that follows is what I would do IF we can.
Regarding free agents, #1 priority is Elias. I would entice him with a 6.5 to 7.5 million salary, the captaincy, and a promise of two additional free agents: Jason Arnott and Petr Sykora. Arnott could be had at 5 million (career year) and Sykora 3 million (poor playoff). Imagine having the A-line back going into the new arena! They will sell season tickets!
The next big issue we need to address is a #1 or #2 defensemen. Since Redden and Chara will likely get the salary max, I would try to sneak up and get Jovanowski for 4-5 million instead.
I would try to get Langenbrunner to settle for about 3-4 million, or let him walk (his bad penalties hurt us all year, including game 3 against Carolina). I'd also try to keep Clemmensen for the league minimum.
I would qualify all the restricted for one year (Gomez, Gionta, White, Martin).
Lastly, I would let Kozlov, Klee, and Rasmussen go, and Albelin will most likely retire.
My (hopeful) line combinations for the 2006-2007 season:
Parise-Gomez-Gionta
Elias-Arnott-Sykora
Pandolfo-Madden-Langenbrunner
Janssen-Zajac-Marshall
Wiemer, Bergfors as extras
Rafalski-Jovanowski
Martin-White
Lukowich-Hale
Matvichuk, Greene as extras
Most likely, Lou and Vanderbeek might not have enough money to make this happen, but without this type of lineup (that includes 2 bonfide centers and 2 bonifide defensemen), we are a conference semi-finalist at best. The current Devils team needs to get bigger and faster. I think the above lineup addresses that. On with the debate!

You're WAY over the cap..

Ok, as Puddy mentionned, this is way over the cap. If we retain Elias, Gomez, Gionta and White, then this team really doesn't have much cash left, and certainly not enough for Jovo and Peca.
Besides, I don't want to pay 4 million for a 4th line center. Also, I have to ask why Gomez is on the 2nd line, and why Flaherty would be an upgrade over Clemmensen.
There are 2 major needs on this team. A 2nd line center, and an offensive defenceman. Any additions to the 3rd or 4th lines via free agency would be unecessary.
The only signing i'm really interested in is brining back McCauley for our 2nd center. Apart from that, a good defenceman would be nice.. but he can't cost more than 3.5-4 million per season.
I'm willing to try the rookies out on the 2nd and 4th lines this year and see how they do.. worked allright for Anaheim this year. We just need to get faster, not more expensive.
I Hate Tie DOMI 06-02-2006, 04:01 PM Why all this talk about Jason Arnott? 5 million for him seems to be a huge overpayment to me, we should be more worried about signing Elias, GIonta, and Gomez long term and getting at least someone to help on the defense. Second line scoring is also a need, but it would have to come cheap or be a call up from Lowell (ie Bergfors)

Arnott had perhaps the best season of his career statistically with 32 Goals and 76 Points while make just under $2.93 million. I doubt anyone would give him $5 million. I would set his fair-market value at $3 million to $3.5 million.
Parise could be moved back to center.
Colin Whites Eye 06-02-2006, 05:01 PM why exactly does everyone want sykora back?
DevilsFan38 06-02-2006, 05:09 PM why exactly does everyone want sykora back?
I don't. I wouldn't mind Arnott, though, but unless he signs for less than everyone is expecting I don't see it happening.

Hey all good lines but i would tweak it slightly
Of course i dont know the cap situation, but here goes
Elias-Arnott-Langenbrunner/Havlat
Gionta-Gomez/Parise-Bergfors
Janssen-Parise/Peca-Brylin/Langenbrunner
Pandolfo-Madden-Tallackson
Spares: Wiemer/Ryznar
YOu may be asking how we could get Mach 9.......Well here goes
Ottawa Gets: Gomez, White, CLemmenson, & 3rd round pick
Devils Get: Havlat, & Volchenkov
(Clemmer could be a suitable back up for Emery......
& We would sign Mike Peca
Then our Defense would be
Ralaski-Volchenkov
Spacek-Martin (I ve been impressed with Spacek)
Hale-Green/Luko (Green & Luko can split time)
Broduer
Brathwaite/Doyle
lucscaps 06-02-2006, 07:17 PM That team doesn't seem to fit into a cap world,
and I don't think Louie Lams would trade White, he loves him
and Clemmer is a UFA so why would Ottawa want to trade for him?
