Following their ouster from the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Saturday night, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim have assigned forwards Dustin Penner, Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf to the AHL's Portland Pirates. Each is eligible to play for Portland in the Calder Cup Playoffs because each was on the Pirates' roster on AHL Clear Day, March 13.
Penner, 23, was a Second Team AHL All-Star in 2005-06, tallying 39 goals and 45 assists for 84 points in just 57 games for Portland while leading the league with a plus-41 rating. He began the 2006 postseason with the Pirates, recording five points in four games before being recalled to Anaheim during the first round.
Penner made his NHL debut with the Mighty Ducks this year, picking up four goals and three assists in 19 games and adding three goals and six assists (along with a plus-10 rating) in 13 Stanley Cup Playoff contests.
Perry, 21, erupted for 16 goals and 18 assists (34 points) in 19 games for Portland during the regular season, including a 17-game scoring streak. He had 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points in 56 games for Anaheim in 2005-06, as well as three assists in 11 playoff games.
Getzlaf, 21, registered eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points in 17 AHL games with Portland in 2005-06, and 14 goals and 25 assists for 39 points in 57 games for the Mighty Ducks. Getzlaf chipped in seven points (3g, 4a) in 16 Stanley Cup Playoff matches.
Penner, Perry and Getzlaf were all selected to play in the 2006 Rbk Hockey/AHL All-Star Classic, but all missed the event due to NHL recall.
Portland has rallied from 0-2 and 1-3 down in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals to force Game 7 in Hershey. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday, with the winner off to face the Milwaukee Admirals in the 2006 Calder Cup Finals beginning Friday night.

Killerbeez 05-30-2006, 12:35 PM Is it wrong to feel sorry for the Hershey Bears and their fans?
no, but they still need to play the game. I wish I could actually be there for this one. I'd pay a lot to see Dustin blow by, no run over Graham Mink on his way to score.
jr77812 05-30-2006, 12:56 PM This got a little heated in Hershey yesterday:

Just remember they still have to play the game....strange things can still happen. I hope Portland does run over the Bears or at the very least, make them look like the team that played in Portland last year.
Later......
Fr@nçois 05-30-2006, 05:40 PM Why it's not fair? Colorado has assigned their young players to Hersey after been defeated by Anaheim. It's the same thing for every team so...Go Portland Go!
I wish my cousin Parenteau will play a great game!

Bobby Ryan doesn't play for the Portland Pirates, he plays for Owen Sound Attack in the Ontario Hockey League.

He has played every game since his call up. He should be in, unless one of the big 3 bump him.
Ignore what I said... Completely forgot he got called.

Yea once his OHL season is over, he is allowed to play in the A.

That's what I was thinking. I'm not sure how much depth the Pirates have, so I wasn't sure if he'd get bumped off of the roster or not.

Does anyone know if Penner will still be considered a rookie in the NHL next season?
Spankatola Jamnuts 05-30-2006, 09:46 PM Isn't the cutoff like 35 games?

Spankatola Jamnuts 05-30-2006, 11:09 PM At least Portland made a series of it, unlike their major league counterparts.

X-SHARKIE 05-30-2006, 11:24 PM I watched the game on webcast tonight and Penner was fantastic... true power forward gem in the making. I did a scouting report on him for McKeens last year when no one really knew him, and I feal cool saying I kind of spotted him first but he has blown away all my expectations so far myself.. .Here is the report I did.
"Dustin Penner (Ana), C
A hulking forward that stands at 6'2, 240 and plays the style of game you want out of a big man .. has a knack for finding himself in the middle of anything and everything on the ice .. has a rough first step but after that his skating is actually impressive for a man of his size .. non-stop motor allows him to skate hard, battling to keep his legs driving and not stopping until he hits somebody .. creates turnovers on the forecheck and is exceptionally good at getting down low quickly and finishes his hits .. not a mean-spirited player and doesn't agitate; rather, he just plays a hard, physical game that complements his size .. agility and in-close skills are impressive for his frame .. surprisingly soft hands when needed .. coaching staff loves him and rewards him with playing time when the skilled players aren't earning it .. if the Ducks don't find room for him, another team will. "
I think the pacific division is home to the two finest young power forwards in the game. I truly believe that Penner will be an all star some day and I believe the Sharks Steve Bernier will do the same and challenge the 50 goal 100 point markers while playing a freakish physical game.
Congrats on the Penner finding.
Randall Graves* 05-30-2006, 11:44 PM wow what a choke job. You get 3 star players back and blow a 2-0 lead!

I was at the game in Hershey, the Perry breakaway goal was amazing he was fell down, and a bears player caught him as he was getting up, but he retained control of the puck. When he got up he deked and around the man back and picked the corner for a goal. Penner and Perry were really good in the game, while I felt the Getlezf(sp) played a really terrible game and him not trying also didn't help at all.
jr77812 05-31-2006, 12:17 AM Well I have to admit it was a tough loss but after coming back from 3-1 down I couldn't have wished for a more exciting ending then in OT of game 7. The Pirates showed a lot of heart and made it a hell of a series! Congrats to all and thanks for a great year.

Getzlaf looked like he was sulking over being sent to Portland from what I tell. The kid will be great in the NHL but seems to have some attitude issues.
He took some lazy penalties and turned the puck over getting too cute if you ask me.
