On this day, May 27, in 1982, John McMullen, John Whitehead and Brendan Byrne purchased the Colorado Rockies and received NHL permission to transfer the franchise to East Rutherdord, New Jersey to play in the soon to be completed arena.

On June 30, 1982, the team officially adopted the name "Devils" after fan balloting

Does anyone know the other choices that fans were given for the team name??? I'm too young to know that, but i'd like to know..

I know one of the choices was the Meadowlanders but thank God that was not voted by the majority.

Happy Birthday to the TOP organization in the entire NHL since 1995 and to a team that has given me many thrills and memories since its inception in 1982.

I am glad the people voted for Devils! Blades sounds like a roller hockey name, Meadowlanders is just horrible. I could have lived with Americans. Wasn't there a team in Brooklyn called the Americans for about a season?

Wasn't there a team in Brooklyn called the Americans for about a season? The first New York team was the New York Americans. In their final season, 1941-42, they changed their name to the Brooklyn Americans, but they continued to play their home games at Madison Square Garden on Eighth Avenue and 50th Street.

After they folded, the NHL entered what is known as the Original Six Era, which ended in 1967-68 when six expansion teams were added to the league.

The Devils are top-notch, they've worked very hard for everything they've gotten and it's been truly impressive.

They should be held up as the standard in the media. How to run a team as a team.

I don't love being a fan of any team anywhere as much as I do the Devils.
