joe_shannon_1983* 05-23-2006, 06:59 PM If you could build a Dream Team for soccer, who would you choose?
Let's say you have to pick 2 strikers/forwards, 4 midfielders, and 4 backs/defenders.
Here is what my team would look like:
------------Ronaldo------------Thierry Henry------------
-----------------------Ronaldinho-----------------------
---------Zinedine Zidane---------David Beckham---------
---------------------Steven Gerrard---------------------
--Roberto Carlos--Alessandro Nesta--Paolo Maldini--Cafu--
-----------------------Oliver Kahn-----------------------
Reserves:
Dida
John Terry
Frank Lampard
Claude Makelele
Pavel Nedved
Andrij Shevchenko
Ruud van Nistelrooy
(Yeah, yeah. My team is probably stupid. But living where I live, I don't get to see all of the players play as much as I would like.)
Shabutie 05-23-2006, 07:02 PM Active players or any player all-time? Cuz Zidane is done.
joe_shannon_1983* 05-23-2006, 07:04 PM Active players or any player all-time? Cuz Zidane is done.
Active players.
Zidane will be done shortly. However, I still consider him active since he will be at the World Cup.
Shabutie 05-23-2006, 07:06 PM Pretty easy question then....Brasil's national team.

:)
Shabutie 05-23-2006, 07:10 PM :)Well actually, I'd probably replace Ronaldinho by Cristiano Ronaldo, that way the team wouldn't be too ugly.

davemess 05-24-2006, 11:42 AM Big Glasgow Rangers Fan and i just got done watching a DVD Collection of the teams 9 in a row season. So i am going to do a team based just on players from those teams.
Goalie : Andy Goram : Nothing like starting out with one of the most difficult of choices... do you take Goram or England regular Chris Woods. I have gone for Goram mainly because he became such a significant part of the core of the team. Woods while simply outstanding was never loved by the players or fans in the same way that Goram was. Goram is also added by the fact that he at times was single-handedly responsible for keeping Celtic out in those vital Old Firm Games.
Left Back : David Robertson : There isn’t really any major competition for the left back spot for Robertson. No other player had a significant impact at that position or held it down for more than a season or two. Despite winning by default Robertson is quality enough to deserve his place in the side, he was an outstanding attacking left back and his linkup play with Brian Laudrup with a thing of beauty.
Centre Half : Richard Gough: An outstanding part of the Ranger machine for those 9 years. While other mainstays like McCoist and Durrant where responsible for the dressing room being a fun place it was Gough who was the Professional heartbeat of the club. Would be Captain of this side as well.
Centre Half : Terry Butcher : Another obvious choice but one i also questioned simply because he was only around for the first couple of league championships and other central defenders where involved for more significant periods (John Brown being the one). However it was the signing of Butcher a few years before the run began that really started the period of dominance for Rangers. Butcher was the first of the big English stars to move North and he brought with him guys who made major impact on the run (Stevens, Steven, Woods, Hately, Wilkins).
Right Back : Gary Stevens : A rock solid part of the Rangers defence during the heart of the 9 year period. Another fullback that could get forward and score the odd goal.
Left Midfield : Brian Laudrup : One of the most difficult choices simply because all 3 of the contenders made a significant impact. Mark Walters filled this spot in the early part of the run and did so with total class. I was surprised watching the DVDs at how significant Pieter Huistra has been in that middle section of the run and just how good a talent he was.... he was a player i had no real memories off. The spot however does go to Brian Laudrup simply because he was the player most responsible for draggin Rangers over the line. It was his ability in the final 3 seasons that kept Rangers above Celtic, especially in the last year where Gough, McCoist and Gazza missed major time with injury.
Centre Midfield : Ian Ferguson : I wanted to fill at least one of the midfield spots with a more aggressive character, somebody who could win the ball and protect the back four while those around surge forward. Which made it a choice between Stuart McCall and Ian Ferguson and i have probably made the wrong one. I have changed my mind on this one at least 6 times, McCall is a better player, more suited to the role assigned here..... but i find it impossible to leave out Ferguson who is after all one of only a couple of guys who did all 9 seasons.
Centre Midfield : Iain Durrant : Another of the few guys who where around for the complete run, however due to his injury issues he wasn’t always a major contributor to the side. That fact that Durrant can still make this team after that horrific injury he suffered is a clue to the talent of the guy. i still think that if he hadn’t suffered that bad injury people would be looking at Durrant as one of the all time great Scottish talents up there with guys like Jim Baxter, Kenny, Denis Law and Davie Cooper). There was no serious completion that could have forced Durrant out of the team however i feel Paul Gascoigne and Kevin Drinkell both deserve a mention for their contributions.
Right Midfield : Trevor Steven : He never really became a huge crowd favourite like some of the other big stars who he shared the Ibrox dressing room with but that in part was due to his quiet nature both on and off the field. He was that rare breed of player who could control a game totally while to the casual observer never looking like he was involved. It is a shame that a player of Stevens nature talents was born English, had he been French or Dutch they would have built their national teams around him. In the England team he was generally marginalized to the fringes of the game. Of course i am making the same mistake as many an England manager by pushing him out wide on the right when he should be in central midfield..... guess i didn’t learn either.
Striker : Ally McCoist : Was there ever any other choice? (Well maybe Mo Johnston who did the impossible and kept Ally out the team for a while). Super Ally is the last of the 9-year guys in the side and he brought 2 vital elements to the Rangers side over those years. The most obvious one being his goals without which Rangers simply couldn’t have achieved 9 successive league championships. The second thing he added to the club was laughter, with his partner in crime Durrant they where responsible for keeping the dressing room a loss and fun place to be even during the tense times and difficult games.
Striker : Mark Hateley : Here is another guy that i had been over looking for years, i always knew he was a significant part of those Rangers teams but i had no idea just how much until i was reminded by watching the DVDs. The simply terrorised the other teams defences, he was virtually impossible to stop in the air. He was also another player under used by the England managers of the time. During his time at Rangers he was the focal point of almost everything Rangers did.

Brian Laudrup - Ian Ferguson -- Iain Durrant - Trevor Steven
David Robertson - Richard Gough - Terry Butcher - Gary Stevens

OT: Hasnt van Basten sent out the message to VN that so long as he is NT manager that VN doesnt fit into his plans esp.with the likes of Huntelaar coming through.
Evilo 07-03-2006, 03:11 AM I think it was the opposite.
He said Ruud would be the starter no matter what.
It seems he's changed his plans though.
VanNistelrooy 07-03-2006, 10:45 AM I dont really know what,s the deal with van Basten...
takharov 07-03-2006, 11:00 AM I dont really know what,s the deal with van Basten...
Ruud said he had a chat with van Basten before the QF v Portugual. van Basten sat him down & explained to him he would not be in the starting line up. However after the match VN being an obvious absence in the predicament the Dutch were Ruud said he was obviously disappointed
He has no gripes with van Basten .Respects him for telling him why he was left out. van Basten himself said he has no problem with Ruud hes been a good servant for Holland but feels the emphasis given his long contract with the KNVB is to bring on the younger players.
Ruud may well not be part of this plan & doesnt appear to be either after the Portugual game when Vennegoor of Hesselink came on rather than Ruud.
Its a strange decision .Hes a proven goalscorer but who are we to question the great that is van Basten ?
bastone 07-03-2006, 10:20 PM Funny the best defenceman in the world is not on the team.Cannavarro is sick, the guy is simply everywhere:bow:
