If thats true, it's a great signing. Getting Melin on a two-way contract will be a plus for this team next year.

He'll definatly get a shot on the 3rd/4th line, as he has a strong defensive game.

He had an excellent season in the Sweedish Elite League this year, he really broke out and showed his offensive game. Great signing for the Ducks.

We'll see I guess we only have about a thousand guys competing for roster spots next year, especially on the 3rd and 4th line.

2-way contract = AHL for Melin

Konopka is ahead of him on the depth chart and Konopka is already performing at high level in North American rinks, unlike Melin.

He'll be our token Swede who goes home during the playoffs next year.

I'm sure it'll come, the news that Hedstrom signed last summer broke first on the net before the Ducks announced it.

It'll be announced soon, I'm sure.

What I really want to know is if Martensson is coming back over next year. Someone over on the Swedish board reported that but I haven't heard anything else.

We need to start stockpiling these mediocre ones. Our Gauthier cupboard is bare now.

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed left wing Bjorn Melin to a one-year entry level contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Melin, 24 (7/4/81), competed most recently with the gold medal-winning Swedish team at the 2006 World Hockey Championships in Riga, Latvia. The 6-2, 209-pound forward earned 0-2=2 points in six tournament games. Melin played in 49 games with HV-71 during the 2005-2006 regular season, earning 17-19=36 points, a career-high in the Swedish Elite League.

He will join the Ducks at training camp in September.

AWESOME NEWS!!! :) :yo: GL to Mr. Melin!!! :)

He can make the club. I think the numbers game will hurt him though. There should be plenty of options in the slot that he would fill, so I'd expect him to start the year out with Portland.

Why don't wait and see what the guy does in camp before passing judgment on him?

Well we're making predictions here right?

There are several factors against Melin making it to Ducks after the camp.

1) 2-way contract
2) lack of north-american experience (smaller rink size, physical & more straightforward style, faster tempo etc)
3) lots of others fighting for a spot

Based on that, I'm expecting him to start the season in Portland. Obviously everything is possible and a great camp could change all that but since nobody here can tell what kind of camp he will have, we have to go with what we know about the guy at this point.

You may well be right about where he winds up. I'm not making any predictions. I just get the impression that you have a bias against some of the Swedish players.

According to a post about Melin on the All Ducks board, "He's a guy that is described by HV71 fans as having soft hands, good speed, a preference for physical play, a hard shot and endless energy." If he truly has all those attributes, it sounds like he brings a lot more to the table than Konopka.

I have no vested interest in whether any particular player makes the Ducks' roster next year and I really liked Konopka when I saw him in camp and during the few games he played for the Ducks.

I thought I read somewhere that Konopka is a Free Agent. If so, which category of Free Agents? What compensation, if any, will another team have to pay if they sign him?

Assuming that both Konopka and Melin come to camp and further assuming that it comes down to the two of them for one of the remaining roster spots, let the better man win. I just want the Ducks to put the best team possible on the ice.

Hey, I don't disagree with that. If he's the best man for the spot available, let him stay in Ducks, I don't have anything against that.

I'm just little sceptical since we have had so many euros coming over with similar descriptions, hell Timo Pärssinen fits that description by HV71 almost perfectly and we all know how he turned out in the NHL.

(and I know there are differences between the two players, size for example)

Konopka will be an UFA come july 1st, if Burke doesn't sign him then there's more room for Melin in Anaheim.

Well to his defense he put up nice numbers in AHL and FEL and from what I heard, he was hampered by an injury for the whole last year (nagging back injury IIRC).
