It should be relatively easy game for Team Finland. Last time the Lions faced Team Slovenia the result was 12-0 for Team Finland. I'd expect about the same result or somewhere near that. It's not a question of which team will win but rather how big is the winning margin.

It'll be something like, 5-1 or soish. The new lines are, interesting, and the third line seems as the only WHC-ready package so far. 1st is rather, appalling, due Jokinen in middle. Oughta be some player who actually does play in the center regularly, not just every 100th game. Second line is catastrophe waiting to happen, Bergenheim straight into lineup? On what basis!? And Kallio on Viuhkola's wing? Last time they played together, Kallio sure had the passes to deliver... and failed, even from empty net!

Oh well, I know I'm not gonna watch this "preliminary/exhibition" (as this really is, isn't Slovenia's playerbase around 200 registered or soish?) sober. Are you?` ;)

Caz

I guess there might be some changes in the first
two, yes. Two centers on the bench, that is a little
strange considering Jokinen as a winger plays center
in the first line.

But I guess Erkka wants to test things too.
So lets not burn the underpants yet but wait
patiently.

I see Slovenia doesn't have their former #1 goalie Stan Reddick on their roster. I remember him playing one hell of a game in the 2003 wc's vs. the Czech's IIRC.

Also gotta watch out for Anze Kopitar.

I have to, I still see nightmares from Vappu. :shakehead

I`m not happy with the lines so I expect only 5-6 goals from Finland.

My lines would be:

Peltonen-Viuhkola-Kallio/Bergenheim
Jokinen-Koivu-Ruutu
Miettinen-Santala-Hentunen
J.Ruutu-Hahl-Rita/Bergenheim

5-3 PP for Finland right now.

What an embarrasing 1st period from team Finland. An example of total underestimation of the opposition.

I thought the goals Slovenia scored were quite pretty! Go Slovenia!

I just dont like the way Saravo, Mäntylä and Lehtinen are playing.

That bad excuse of a ref and new rules make it look even worse, and as somebody said before this should be hockey and not penalty contest!

Mäntylä got a really odd penalty, when he turned some Slo player hit the back of his skate and fell down.

If the finns dont win this game, they should be humiliated by some midevil and very cruel way!

First of all, the weakest team in the tournament is definitely Italy, with DEN/NOR/SLO being next.
Second, nbd is denying that your team is much better. But to state that you should bong 15 goals is just plain rediculous.
And to summarize: your team wasn't that bad today, no matter what you think.. our team just did our best.

I have to give props to the Slovenian team. I agree. Team Slovenia has really developed since our last match three years ago (12-0). They had tonight great goaltending and their D-men really put their bodies front of the puck. Also they could create very balanced attacks and use the space that finnish d-men gave them.

Still I`m bit dissapointed that Nik Zupancic wasn`t there. He was great in JYP in 1999-00.

Why does it matter so much? Nbd is telling me that 5 PP goals are a sign of bad powerplay.

The Finns could play 5 times 5 against 3 and didn't achieve to score one single time. In the whole game the Finns could play 30 minutes with at least 1 man more. That means 15 times in powerplay and only 5 goals, that's really bad. Your team played a better powerplay.
And sorry without offensing Slovenia, with this powerplay they played this afternoon, they hadn't scored even once against stronger teams like Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Canada or USA.

We can summarize the game as follow:

Finland: powerplay=really bad
penaltykilling=bad too
offense=bad
defense= insufficient too

the only positive thing for the Finns is that they finally won.

Slovenia: goaltending= very good
powerplay= good at least in the beginning
defense=not bad

the best player of Slovenia the goalie and Kopitar.

By the Finns nobody played really well.

My thoughts exactly. Especially the slovenian goaltender was awesome today and was their best player today (Kopitar a close second) imo. Still, to me it's clear that Team Finland underestimated Team Slovenia and that is a very big reason why this game was so hard for Team Finland.

Because with that kind of PP-% you are in trouble against better teams.

.3 PP% is bad for you?
You're not playing Armenia for God's sake. Some teams HAVE actually improved, you know?

Yes, and also the other young players Miettinen, Bergenheim and Jokinen played really good.
But the worst players of Finland for me were Nummelin and Peltonen. :shakehead

Like I said, I give props to team Slovenia, they played very good game. But, with that kind of PP that our team introduced, you are in serious trouble against teams like Canada, Sweden or Czech Republic, not to offend Slovenians.

Hey, none offence taken, we're just discussing here..
Your PP(2) obviously wasn't stellar, but it was decent. Our d-men made some sloppy unnecessary penalties.
If I was asked, I'd be worried about Finnish EQ play.
Anyway your youngsters had a very good game while Petteri and Ville disappointed.

I was just coming to that... But if refereeing is like it was today, all the games will be settled on PP and that's why I'm a bit worried.

Not a chance. Only four foreign players allowed per team. Ofcourse, not every foreign player work out for their team but the aim for foreign acquisitions is higher than Kopitar.

Edit. I mean this season ofcourse. If my favourite team signed Kopitar for next season, I'd be absolutely ecstatic. But he'll play in the AHL next year. Awesome talent.

I think the Kings have different plans, but we'll see.

Well at the end Team Slovenia didnt have the endurance to stay with Finns, in 3rd period they had no chance.

But with the attitude that most of the Finn-defenders had in our own end, that could be described as "stay at home, dont move and use a bitta poke-check or whatever" is just what i dont want to see. That leads only to embarrassing moments like Saravo had, ducking for the puck(or whatever he was trying to do).

I dont know what it is, but i just dont like the way T.Kallio plays. He just doesnt have the grid to make a game winner/to be a keyplayer against big teams(hope im wrong).

Aside from assisting our 1st goal, Nummelin created three breakaways for Finland (all wasted as usual) and was just about the only part of Finland's PP that was working alright (save for a few sloppy passes). He's definitely played better and Slovenia's 2nd goal can be partially blamed on him, but I wouldn't exactly call him the worst player on the team. In fact, none of our forwards looked more impressive with the puck than Nummelin IMO.

True.

I really wish that Koivu and T.Ruutu will get some PP time, they played great together. Rita was decent, but maybe some other would do better in that line. Bergenheim, Hentunen?

I'd say Sean Bergenheim was our best player today, him and Mikko Lehtonen are perhaps the only players I can give a "lion" for their performance, all others get at least one "sheep".

Our two man PP get's three "sheeps" today.

If we play like this against Latvia only Niitty can save us.

And hopefully Bäckström will get the number 2 spot in goal behind Niittymäki because Norrena is crap and shouldn't play for Finland anymore.

I dunno, but I've never got the idea of all Norrena bashing. IMO he's not any worse (a bit more consistent even) than Bäckström and always available, so he gets the nod as the best alternative.

Let's just hope that Nitty will have his olympic mojo back, as I feel he'll get a bashing as well if he doesn't.

Norrena is a great WHC goalie, IMO the best we have in Europe.

But he never deserved a spot on the original Olympic roster (though he ended up being just fine). Toivonen, Niittymäki and Toskala are all better.

Norrena did what he could. It's Tuukka Mäntylä that has to be cut from the team. He's just horrible. He makes big mistakes in every game. He's small, has a bad shot, plays stupid....he lacks almost everything is needed for a good d-man. I'd be much more comfortable to see there 197cm Malmivaara than 172cm Mäntylä.

Let's look at some facts here regarding norrenas performance against Slovenia.

First goal: Perfect shot on the PP with a good screen infront of Norrena, no goalie could have saved it, the goal of the tournament so far imo.

Second goal: The only questionable goal let in by Norrena, he should have covered the ice better, but it hit the post and in so it was a accurate shot by kopitar.

Third goal: Very lucky bounce to Kopitar, no chance whatsoever for Norrena to make the transition.

But overall i agree that Norrena isn't the kind of goalie that's gonna win you the big games, he hasn't won a single one yet at least.

You are right. Looks like the Slovenian team is actually good, and the fact that they were able to keep it close against the Czechs is testimony to that.
At this point, I'm glad we we able to beat them 5-3... Could have been a lot worse.

I hope Slovenia beats Latvia. Good luck guys!
