jiggs 10 10-31-2003, 09:41 PM What a sloppy game! Yale came out of the chute pretty fast, while UND looked tired. Yale took an early lead on a goal Jordan Parise would certainly like back. If tonight's game is any indication, Yale is a pretty "chippy" team (read: rough-and-tumble). They seemed to think they could get North Dakota off their game by playing football instead of hockey!
I have not seen North Dakota look so bad in quite a while. Terrible passes in their own end, players running into each other, etc. Luckily, both teams played better in the 2nd period. UND came back with some good goals, but still looked far from the #2 team in the NCAA.
In the 3rd, it all fell apart for Yale. At least 3 of the 8 goals they gave up should have been stopped. And there was one disallowed that was borderline. For Yale, though, if they had been able to get more shots on net they may have scored more, too. Jordan Parise gave up 3 goals on about 12 shots. He really should have had 2 of them. So Yale could have been right in this game if they had managed more shots on net.
I sure hope Saturday's game is a better game. And for Yale, if I was Mr. Callahan (#7), I'd watch myself. He's going to get his *ss thumped by the end of the weekend at the rate he's going. Talk about a guy asking for trouble! He made some tackles the Yale FOOTBALL team would be proud of! Then he tried to intimidate Andy Schneider (UND captain). Ha!
Hopefully, both teams play a better brand of hockey on Saturday night. Otherwise, it will make for another pretty bad game of hockey.
Canadian 11-01-2003, 06:33 PM You thought Friday night's game was sloppy, what about tonight's game (Saturday)? North Dakota blew out Yale, 10-0.
jiggs 10 11-01-2003, 10:07 PM Tonight was a completely different kind of game. North Dakota came out flying, and scored in the first 40 seconds! It was a cleaner game, as neither team got quite as rough as the night before. But UND had more fire tonight, and Yale looked tired or something. I think North Dakota decided they had to get off to a fast start, and just kept pouring it on, and Yale (for whatever reason) couldn't get going Saturday. It happens.
The Sioux were led by the #1 player in the NCAA-Zach Parise, who got the hat trick and hit a pipe in the second, also.
I don't know why Yale looked so much different, because Friday night, even though they lost 8-4, they were a physical, hard-checking team (boardering on dirty). Saturday, they showed little of this, and seemed to just be tired. UND won most the races to the puck, most of the fights for the puck, and got off many more shots.
It was cool, however, to see NHL Hall of Famer Mike Gartner in the stands, watching his son (right?). He did an interview later where he alluded to that, so...
Man, the second 700 goal scorer I've seen in our arena (Brett Hull in college for Duluth was the other)! Pretty cool for a little town in the middle of nowhere!
Oilers Chick 11-01-2003, 11:18 PM Great game notes! :handclap:
FYI, yes Josh is Mike Gartner's son. Somehow did you get the feeling that Yale could've REALLY used Chris Higgins this weekend?
Nice to see Zach get the hat trick. I love this kid and regardless of what some may think of him, I think he's terrific and he's going to just get better & better. :yo:
You must be looking forward to the grudge match versus Minnesota next weekend. That's gonna be a good one to watch!

Yes, even with the Gophers slipping in the rankings, it will be a great weekend. As a special treat, the Hanson Brothers (of "Slap Shot" fame) are going to be at the game on Saturday night!

donīt take me wrong, parise is a great prospect but he has to show some leadership, based on the last year playoffs the the only #1 in ncaa is vanek!

I was going by this year. Vanek hasn't done much, 7 points in 6 games in good, but not earth-shattering for a #3 draft pick. But Parise isn't as high as he should be, either, with 7 points in 5 games. I have just seen Vanek loaf far too often in the first 2 periods of games to be impressed. He obviously has loads of talent. He just needs to get more focus. I'm sure it will happen.
Should be a fun weekend, no matter what!
