The importance of tonight's game needs no superlatives to describe its meaning to the Devils. The Devils will pull into a tie for points with the Flyers with a regulation win. The Flyers would have the first tie-breaker, which is better PTS/GP -- something that isn't used at the end of the regular season. Nevertheless, it would be a great victory.

In a perfect world we beat Philly tonight and get some help from Pittsburgh and sit back Saturday and watch the Rangers and Flyers sweat it out. However, beating Philly twice within a few days won't be easy.

Yea, I really wouldn't mind getting the 5 seed ,but would much rather stick it good to the rangers in round one, assuming they still hold the 3 seed. Either way, I want to beat up on the Flyers tonight. Anyone know the goaltenders? I'm guessing Nitty and Brodeur, but not sure...

Like you, I want to see rangers go down and it would be awesome if the devils would do it. By the way I know this cant be, but how great would it be if we would play the rangers in the last round and kicked there a...s.

By virtue of Montreal's loss last night, we will clinch at least 6th with a win tonight, and avoid Carolina and Ottawa in the 1st round.

A couple of things I'd like to see before the season ends. One, I want to see Elias go on a scoring rampage. He's been doing well setting up the PP and making passes every now and then, but I'd like to see him (really) take some initiative and score a bunch of goals. Secondly, just for kicks, I'd like to see Janssen get his first goal.

It'll be nice to face the Flyers on Sunday on the second day of a back-to-back (they play the Rangers on Saturday) for them.

Thank god. Playing Ottawa in the first round is a killer.

This reminds me of the '04 season when we were also trying to steal the third seed from Philly.

Happy 30th to Elias!

I don't care what the other teams do. NJ's hot, Philly's not, and I want a Devils win tonight! Just as David Puddy says, it's an important game and just as I say, it's a rival team. It's ALWAYS good to get a win over your rivals. Let's work hard tonight (even though I'll be stuck bored out of my mind in Life Data Analysis class), NJ!

By virtue of Montreal's loss last night, we will clinch at least 6th with a win tonight, and avoid Carolina and Ottawa in the 1st round. :clap:I don't fear any teams because I think a New Jersey Devils team playing their best can defeat anyone, but it would be difficult to make things happen if our Devils had to play the Hurricanes or Senators in the First Round.

Look at the game in Raleigh the other night. The Devils won, but it was really difficult. If the any team has to play six or seven games like that in the opening round, it will be difficult for them to perform in the next round.

However, I hope that the Devils players and coaching staff concentrates on tonight's game and tonight's game alone.

Any word on if Forsberg plays in this one?

i found this blurb about it:

VOORHEES, N.J. -- Flyers center Peter Forsberg and coach Ken Hitchcock said they will decide today if Forsberg should test his strained groin tonight against the Devils at the Meadowlands.

"We're not going to put him in unless he's 100 percent," Hitchcock said.

Asked if Forsberg would be in the lineup if tonight's game was a playoff game, Hitchcock quipped, "He'd be playing at 40 percent if this was a playoff game."

Forsberg, who has missed the last three games with groin pain, skated for about 50 minutes on Wednesday but was cautious afterward.

"We're in the mix with the position we're in, but right now it doesn't matter who we're going to play," he said. "It's going to be a tough first round anyway."

Any word on if Forsberg plays in this one?I saw this article on NHL.com this morning, "Forsberg's status uncertain (http://www.nhl.com/news/2006/04/268344.html)."
Here's an excerpt, the Flyers might have to do it without Forsberg, their star centre who has missed the last three games with a groin injury.

Forsberg participated in an optional skate at the team's practice facility on Wednesday and said his status for Thursday night's game at New Jersey will be a game-time decision.

Flyers lose without Foppa and the Devils haven't played with this much confidence in a long, long time. The Devils are gunning for all the points and still not only have a shot at a higher seed, but also first in the divsion.

Fact, we have won the cup everytime we've been a 5th. seed, you don't the players are aware of that beau?

Flyers get pummeled both times are the Devils want it all, 4-1 Devils.

New York Rangers 1 Pittsburgh 1...cmon Pittsburgh, we gave you some lopsided victories, time to return the favor.

Great game by the entire squad so far! Couldn't ask for more.

Also: We are really starting to see Parise's offensive flair shine through. I'm not talking about his skate deflection goal, but he just seems to have the confidence to take on the defensement and stickhandle a bit. I just hope that that game is decided in regulation. See this for the official tie-breakers (http://www.nhl.com/standings/20052006/conference_standings.html#tieBreak). If the Flyers lose Saturday, the game on Sunday will be the breaker. If they beat the Rangers on Saturday then we need to beat them on Sunday and for them to choke it up - which I doubt could happen - against the Islanders on Tuesday to pass them.

Now if that happens, Philly beating the Rags, we beating Philly and then Philly losing to the Islanders while we beat the Habs and finally the Rangers losing to Ottawa, the division is ours.

A super long shot, would love to know what the odds of that happening are.

Every member of the Devils hockey club had a great game. The only negative was the two penalties, but the guys that drew them led the team with 4 Hits each. They played great

At one point during the night, I thought Scott "The Mexican Missile" Gomez was taking the puck through the nutral zone, but it was David Hale. Would a great game he and his partner Ken Klee had.

And Colin White was wonderful. He blocked 7 shots and helped keep Gagne from doing anything.

The Flyers are actually in 5th still because the NHL uses better record as the 1st tie-breaker during the season. It matters not, and go Flyers on Saturday. I just hope that that game is decided in regulation. See this for the official tie-breakers (http://www.nhl.com/standings/20052006/conference_standings.html#tieBreak). The first one is not a factor at the conclussion of the season because all teams play 82 games.

The way I read the tie breaker, aren't the Devils in 5th?
First tiebreaker is wins (Devils have 44, Flyers have 43)

Second tiebreaker is number of points in head to head competition (in seven games Devils have 8 pts, Flyers have 7 pts) but this only matters if they both have the same number of wins.

Third tiebreaker is goal differential (Devils have 233-225 = +8, Flyers have 258-252 = +6) but this only matters if they are tied in both wins and head-to-head.

Gionta w/ 3 assists tonight, Parise w/ 2 goals, Gomez a goal and a assist, Elias 2 assists...Gionta can do more than score ladies and gents. Strong game all around...we're now tied w/ the Flyers but they have 1 game in hand and the tiebreaker so its going to be difficult to pass them.

If we run the table, the Flyers cannot finish ahead of us.

We win both games for 101 pts. (46-27-9)
Right now the Flyers are 43-25-11 for 97 pts. If we beat them Sunday, the most they can get is 101 pts. and be 45-26-11. We will have both the first and second tie breakers, and finish ahead of them.
As for the Rangers, they have 100 pts. right now (44-24-12). Obviously, if they win 1 game, we cannot pass them. They can, however lose 1 in OT (0-1-1). If they do that, and wind up with 101 pts, the record will be 44-25-13. Again, we would own the tie breaker, most wins.

Summary of what we need:

Devils: Win, Win --> 101 pts. 46-27-9
Flyers: Win, Lose, Win --> 101 pts. 45-26-11
Rangers: Lose, Lose (OT) --> 101 pts. 44-25-13

4, the Islanders game is meaningless. If we win out we finish with 101 points, the Flyers could only finish with 101 points and we have the tiebreaker.

The Rangers need to choke. If they get a win or two OT losses they knock us out of first place contention. Their remaining games are against the Flyers and the Sens...the Sens are battling for first place and so are the Flyers, tonight was their gimme and they blew it.

I have a lot more faith that they can do it tonight than I did this afternoon.

Not only that but we can actually win and lose a game in OT and win the division!!!! If the Rangers lose both games in regulation and go pointless the Devils can win and tie and win the division.

Even funnier.....if the Rangers lose both in regulation we can win then LOSE in OT and essentially win the division on an OT loss!!! (with both tiebreakers) Boy would that be a shame for the Ranger fans...NOT!!!!!

Again, we are an ELITE hockey team, playing betterthen any other club in the entire league. We gots our stuff together people.

Not a bad game by any player. Gomez now is our 2nd 80 point player this year.

If Elias played from game 1 this season and you add about 20-25 goals to his #'s the Devils would not be considered a team with a problem scoring. We would have over 260 goals total and be in the upper half of the pack. We are now getting consistent secondary scoring and even when there is a penalty it is either a smart one, a questionable call, or they redeem themselves. Marty again dominant in net. Statement defense.

I am pumped for the playoff war. This current streak is Operation Devils Statement. Next week starts Operation Devils Storm.

I couldn't agree more.

This team has faced so much adversity and so many questions during the course of this season it is absolutely incredible they are where they are today.

This team is the epitome of perseverance, and no matter what happens from here on out the New Jersey organization has proved to me that all those things about “team” that they have always preached for the last decade or so, were absolutely true and not just lip serve.

I remember that controversy. Even worse (but slightly off topic) was that in NHL2004, Chris Phillips was listed as a 1972. I guess no one at EA found it strange that a 24 year old was drafted 1st overall in '96.

Well said. I felt the same way in 2003. It was supposed to be a bad season with no more Holik, 2/3 of the A-line gone, and bunch of unproven guys. By the end of the season I was so proud of them that I didn't care if we won a single game in the playoffs. I felt our regular season was that special.

Seriously, this team gets kicked around so much

how many anti-devils rules were enacted during the lockout?
how many stars leave via free agency?
how many home games aganst the Rags do they play to a sea of blue?

It is so fun to root for them, they really make you believe anything is possible.

For me, the Devils have already accomplished more than I could've asked for in September. Everything else from here on out is gravy (though I hope that like in 2003, there is plenty of it)

Another thing I noticed last night;

Dave Hale is looking more and more comfortable with the puck. He led the rush on two plays last night and his skating ability and decsion making with the puck looked realy good.

I would love to see him get a little bit of a taste of PP time on the second unit in Whites place to show that big booming shot I KNOW he has. With all the hard minutes White is playing there is no need for him to be on the Ice during the PP....plus he is not very effective there.

I think that second PP unit needs a little bit of an overhaul. Right now they don't seem much of a threat.

From the Flyers board:

So why do they all whine when the Devils play the trap? They have to focus their frustration on something. It's scapegoating. It gives them a way to rationalize the loss that doesn’t place blame on their own players. It also allows them to diminish the accomplishments of a team they don't like, though sometimes they place blame solely on the goaltender.

The next step is to be critical of the Devils attendance. Then you know the Devils are at the top of their game.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it in the Devils-Rangers GDT from Sunday, but Chico Resch said, "Just for the record Doc, the Rangers are using the trap. So let's not just always accuse the Devils of protecting the lead." The score was 2-1 in favor of the Rangers at the point with 9:32 to play in the game. The Mexican Missile, a great trap-buster, would change things his three-zone, Hobey Baker style rush a little over a minute later.

Why wouldn't a team use the neutral-zone trap? It's better strategically. I like think of it in historically terms. At the beginning of the American Civil War, they employed Napoleonic tactics. It was basically lining up against the opposing forces and trying to advance. By the end of the war, it was realized that this was suicidal, so entrenched war fair became the standard. The riffled-musket became too accurate to march head-first into one another.

Using the 1-2-2 is much like combat from an entrenched position circa 1864. It was the intelligent thing to do.

Hale did move the puck really well and played smart hockey against the Flyers, but my fear is that he may try to take too many chances. The Devils defensemen play conservatively. Hale doesn't have the speed of Rafalski to get back if the puck is turned over when he is behind the goal line.

Hale also has yet to score a goal in 102 NHL games. He only also has only scored 4 goals in 60 AHL games. He does possess a quality shot, but he is not Al MacInnis on the blueline.
