openicehit04 04-11-2006, 11:21 AM Hey guys, on DevilsRule they have an article from Toronto saying that the leafs should get Elias to play with Sundin.
Makes me a little nervous because Leafs have a lot of spending money to overpay, and we are...well we have to watch every penny. I hope Elias is loyal to us.

Overpay what? The Leafs have to endure the salary cap like everyone else in the NHL. Are they going to have a lot of cap space this offseason?
Easton 04-11-2006, 11:31 AM Toronto is trying to get anyone to play with Sundin, who is so overrated.
ACC1224 04-11-2006, 11:35 AM I'm sure any team, including the Leafs, that have cap room will be going after Elias. If I was to bet, I'd say he stays where he is.
As for Sundin overrated, I'm sure the more informed fans here will dispute that.
No doubt, the Leafs want Elias. BUt so does every other team in the NHL.
If the leafs buy out belfour, which i certainly hope they will, they can afford to give Elias the league mx ($7M/yr) if they so chose.
No, Sundin is not overrated. And if he had Elias on his wing, damn that would be a force.
Kashew* 04-11-2006, 12:41 PM no one wants elias because he's overpriced.
Lestriker 04-11-2006, 12:57 PM Patrik Elias would look great in a habs jersey on a line with Kovalev no doubt.
devsfan8 04-11-2006, 01:12 PM no one wants elias because he's overpriced.
Overpriced? All 30 teams WILL pay him more then he makes now to sign him. In fact the only team I think he would take a cut for is to stasy with NJ.
He will have 40 points in 40 games this year. Easily one of the top 5 wingers in hockey when healthy and on his game. He is not overpriced. Mogilny is overpriced.
passpassscore 04-11-2006, 03:16 PM Toronto is trying to get anyone to play with Sundin, who is so overrated.
Sundin is not overrated. If I could choose any center in the league to play for the Devils, it would be Mats Sundin.
Can't blame the leafs for wanting Elias, however they should be concerned with dealing with its problems [belfour, lindros] before it starts to look for improvements. (I personally think Suggy is a great start for the leafs).
They need to gut some of the offense, get a keeper, and find a supporting cast to an already solid blueline. I can see the leafs in the thick of contention with a little tweaking.
tangible_faith 04-11-2006, 03:22 PM I live in Toronto. What player hasn't been rumoured to be coming to Toronto via trade or FA?

Thats a bunch of codswallop.

Well Lindros is a UFA so we won't have to bother with him. But Belfour has a 1.5 million buy-out that can be split over 2 years, so it's only really a 750K cap hit.
Back to The topic: Elias is definetly at the top of my wishlist. Sundin would FINALLY get his winger. Plus, we already took Nieuwendyk and Mogilny from you.....why not Elias? ;)
Colin Whites Eye 04-11-2006, 03:36 PM i really dont think that elias is the kind of guy that is going to leave for more money. i think he is committed to NJ, that could b e just me though....
Pinto 04-11-2006, 03:36 PM BTW, Could anyone post that article here?
TaiMaiShu 04-11-2006, 03:36 PM booo
Toronto is trying to get anyone to play with Sundin, who is so overrated.
Ssshhhh! Don't tell that to Leaf fans, in these parts he is the team MVP this year. He was force to be reckoned with! BTW, at this point in Mats career they don't need someone to play with Mats they need Mats to play with someone if you catch my drift....Elias>Sundin
NaChOs 04-11-2006, 03:44 PM i hope this dosn't happen i live in toronto and everyone is rumoured to come here... i hope elias is loyal
Feed Me A Stray Cat 04-11-2006, 03:57 PM Elias will be re-signed before July 1st. Non-issue.
Also, I will seriously laugh my *** off if Toronto offers the max for Elias. :biglaugh:

Are they going to have a lot of cap space this offseason?
Tons of it. Besides Sundin and Kaberle pretty much everyone that takes up any significant cap space if coming off the books after this season.
16.8M comitted to 8 players, with 6 RFA that need to be qualified.
Assuming we pay them 5M combined, which is probably a bit of an overestimate given the players in question that would put us at 14 players under contract at 21.8M.
Add in 3 rookies on D (at least if you believe the GM JFJ) that would bring us to 17 players contracted, assuming their all pushing near the rookie maximum of roughly 1M each that would bring us to 24.8M.
Add in 2.5M due to Belfour for not picking up his contract option (As JFJ has pretty much confirmed is the case) we'd be at 27.3M total for 17 players.
That space will be taken up by 2 D-Man, a goaltender and 2-3 wingers.
Pilar (D) and Suglobov (RW) respectively will likely take up two of those spots, so assuming 2M between them that puts us at 29.3M over 19 players.
An upper tier D-Man is almost certain to take up 4-6M, the rest of it is pretty much a guessing game as to whom will be signed.
I haven't heard so much as a hint of the Leafs interest in Elias prior to now, but Toronto is usually rumoured to be signing everybody that's ever played in the NHL at any point in their lives so frankly I wouldn't put much stock in it.

Why dont you take that pos klee back. No matter what happens, the leafs will make bad choices, because , they usually do. There isnt one leaf player I'd like to see on our team. Maybe McCabe.

Well you can take McCabe if you want, I personally would rather put 5+ million towards a defenseman who can play defense.
Drewr15 04-11-2006, 04:55 PM Tell you what since the Leafs have all this cap room - how about we give you mcgillis, malakhov, mogilny to help fill up all your cap space and you can give us back Sundin and he and Patty can play here. :D
Back to the real world, I don't envision Elias leaving - i'm more worried about Gomer only signing a one year deal and then bolting after the next season. Patty I think will stay. Damien Cox of the sun is Toronto's equivalent of Everson. Nothing to write about so let's make up a rumor.
Oh and in my humble opinion, Sundin is a great center and he really hasn't played with any good wingers up in Toronto.

Nice post. I agree about Sundin. he is a great leader and player on a bad team.
As for Gomez, I think he will only get an increased Qualifying offer for one year again. But based on Vanderbeeks budget of reaching the Cap ceiling and his willingness to allow Lou to sign players for large sums of money, I think during the course of next season Gomez will be signed long term as we enter the new era at Newark. And it will be around $5 million a year.
Subway Schenn 04-11-2006, 05:09 PM Love to see it happen, but it won't. Elias seems to be a loyal guy.
But at least we can dream . .

You are truly out of your mind. Maybe over a career Mogilny has put up better #'s and he is a bonified first ballot hall of famer with over 1000 points. But today, you are going to tell me that Mogilny is better then Patrik Elias?

Totally agree.. If there was anyone on the Leafs i had to have, it'd be the Leafs.. I dunno about one center in the league..
As for Sundin overrated? If anything, he can be underrated.. Look who his linemates have been most of the time...I think he's a great leader as well
DevilFisch 04-11-2006, 06:01 PM Whaaaaat? You mean to tell me Jonas Hoglund is NOT a suitable linemate for Sundin? :dunno:
mogilny could dangle circles around elias! :madfire: :madfire: :madfire: :madfire:
Maybe 10 years ago, he could...
TaiMaiShu 04-11-2006, 06:12 PM no one see's sarcasm?

play for my dream team? maybe, but prabably not. I think he'd fit on the devils brilliantly. (sorry to deviate)
mogilny could dangle circles around elias! :madfire: :madfire: :madfire: :madfire:
In his prime perhaps.
Mogilny is long passed his prime however, and Elias is a supertar, and arguably elite LW'er. He's certainly one of the top players in the game at his position.
Pinto 04-11-2006, 10:32 PM Sundin with 4 goals and 2 assists tonight ;)
Kashew* 04-11-2006, 10:33 PM sundin doesn't even need teammates. he's the new ovechkin.
OvechkinDomination* 04-11-2006, 10:37 PM Toronto is trying to get anyone to play with Sundin, who is so overrated.
Yeah, Sundin is overrated. That's why he has led the Leafs in points every year since 1994 minus the 02/03 season playing with garbage most of the time. He also missed the first quarter of this season, he's playing with Antropov and Ponikarovsky and is still leading us in points and goals this season. Not to mention he is one of the best leaders in the NHL.
BTW, Sundin had 4 goals and 2 assists tonight.
Yeah, overrated........
David Puddy 04-11-2006, 10:57 PM In his prime perhaps.

He's certainly one of the top players in the game at his position.Elias is also excellent in all facets of the game (except face-offs.) He is very good in his own zone, and he will throw his body around. He's a very complete hockey player, and a world-class athlete.
devsfan8 04-11-2006, 11:02 PM I wil say one thing about Mogilny. I would rather have him in the playoffs then Kozlov. Bum hips or not I have more faith in his scoring ability and playof experience then Koz. Whether he rides the bench or not, I would take Mogs over Kozlov in a hearbeat on any line.
El_Scoobo 04-11-2006, 11:11 PM Yeah, Sundin is overrated. That's why he has led the Leafs in points every year since 1994 minus the 02/03 season playing with garbage most of the time. Somebody's gotta lead them in scoring. One of the turtles must win.
I think that Sundin is a fine player, he is fairly talented and appears to be a team guy. But he's put on a pretty high pedistal by the biased Toronto media. Bah
Unthinkable 04-11-2006, 11:22 PM Can't see Elias leaving the Devils. The captaincy is his for the taking next season.
Leafs fans, whats with the dig on Jason Allison not being a good team player in this article? He was a good a team player as anyone could of asked from him in Boston and LA and from the games I've watched him play this year, he's been similarly unselfish. Does this all go back to the talk that he wanted to be traded earlier in the year or is there more to this then whats been revealed in the media?
