The Devils magic number

Best I can figure it, Jersey needs 3 more wins in the next 7 to atleast qualify. NYR clinched with 93pts last night so that means that atl, tor and fla can't get to that point level anymore.

So lets get atleast the 3 wins and hope for 7 and a better seeding.

The Devils magic number is 8. Any combination of the Devils gaining or Atlanta not-gaining eight points will clinch a playoff spot for the Devils.

Atlanta has 78 PTS with eight games remaining. The maximum number of points that the Thrashers can achieve is 94. If the Devils get 95 PTS, which they would if the pick-up 8 PTS, the Thrashers can not pass the Devils in the standings.

Every time the Devils win or Atlanta loses, two points is removed from the magic number. One point is removed for OT's earned by the Devils or Thrashers.

The Rangers clinched when they surpassed 94 PTS. Philadelphia will clinch if they pick-up two more points or Atlanta loses or has two loses after regulation.

I never look down at the standings, I only look up, and am still hoping to catch Philly or NY (of course their game went to OT)

The Devils magic number drops by two because of the win. The Devils magic number is now 6.
I never look down at the standings, I only look up, and am still hoping to catch Philly or NY (of course their game went to OT)The best thing the Devils can do is go out and win the day's game. It would be nice to catch either of those teams, but I set my first goal as a fan as qualifying for the post-season. I would really like to finish in 6th or higher.

As for the NYR-PHI game going to OT, I almost think they have a secret pact to make sure the game is tied after regulation so as to limit the Devils chances.

Seriously that's like the fifth time in seven games the game has gone to OT with those two. That's including multiple games that are tied in the last minute. :madfire:

Anyone else like three points available in every game? Three for a regulation win, two for a win after regulation, one for a loss after regulation, none for a regulation loss.

Only downside is four columns under wins/losses again. Maybe do away with the traditional 35-25-6 and list something like 56-106 (games and points only, assuming 5 of the 35 wins came after regulation ties.)

There will be more incentive to win in regulation time which cannot be a bad thing.

I would be for removing the point for an OT loss but keeping it for a SO loss.

Anything that makes things more complicated are out though.

Doesn't that encourage conservative play in OT from both teams? Three points in regulation should encourage attacking play from both teams late in a tied game. Maybe it makes a team trailing late even more desperate to tie, especially against close rivals, who should be more anxious to retain their lead.
