I didn't know anything about him till I read the Devils press announcement. Seems like a decent addition. Had decent offensive numbers for a defenseman. I wonder what the scouting report on his defensive game is? Seems like he must be decent considering all of those awards that he won. Do we see him in Albany before the end of their season?

Sounds like a good addition, but when it comes to our defensive prospects there's no such thing as a bad addition.

I like this signing very much. Now, are there any other college free agents who Lou could sign? And do you think Travis Zajac will be signed after the Frozen Four is finished?

BTW, should Lou sign Jordan Parise? I say no, but if he can be one of the top two goalies in Albany next season, it may be worth it. Still, Marty should be here for quite a while. As long as he stays healthy, he will honor his contract and could play until he is 40. We just need a reliable backup for him and one good goalie in Albany.

An Impressive signing, Greene is simply an amazing defensmen. Very smart and amazing at both ends of the ice.

He was one of the best NCAA free agent... probably the best defenseman available.

Bill Thomas can play in the NHL, same with Ryan Potulny, but they can't play in the AHL.
Other guys, like Atherthon (TB) signed an AHL tryout so they can play as this level...

Yes, all these guys are eligible for the NHL roster BEFORE the season ends, so 5 or 6 games, they CAN NOT play during the playoffs.

To win both best Defensive AND Offensive Defenseman award is quite a feat. That alone has to speak volumes about his well rounded play. With the shallow pool of prospects on the blueline in the system, Greene probably has a good chance to make an instant impact in the organization.....

Everything I am reading about Andy Greene is very encouraging. This is the first step of what I hope is many in fixing the lack of depth situation on defense.

What is interesting abut Greene in reading one of the links above is not only is he not allowed to play in the post season this year, but he also cannot be sent to Albany. HE MUST remain with the Devils the rest of the season. He will likely not play down the stretch unless we clinch a spot. To risky to play a guy who has never seen NHL action.

Nevertheless I am liking what I hear. He is one of the top defensive prospects and certainly a top CCHA Defensive prospect winning all types of awards.

He also has 2 brothers..Shane and Matt. Is this the brother of Vancouver's 4th line center Matt Greene?

Unlike Rafalski, he's only 23, so we get him early.

In the new NHL, there really isn't a huge need for big physical d-man anymore. You need guys who can skate, and keep up with the quick forwards. If you can chip in on offense, that is a huge bonus.

I'm a little surprised because LL usually doesn't bid for these UFA college guys who are usually undersized (or they would have been drafted) but he must have had a few competitors for http://ccha.cstv.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/040506aab.html services.

Here's my 2 cents on Andy Greene. I havent seen Fraser play, only know him by what I have read. I know they are very different players. That being said I would be suprised if Fraser is a as good a player as Andy Greene. I watched him alot over the years and I think he compares favorably to Freddy Meyer(who I think is a very good player).

There have been comparisons to Brian Rafalski.

NHL rules prohibit Greene from playing in the AHL. He is eligible to play in the NHL regular season but not the playoffs. For now, he'll soak up the atmosphere.

I don't think he's going to make the roster and was probably more invited to complete the team for this game, but still it's an interesting experience for him. :)

Back to Greene, I agree it is a good experience for him, but I doubt he makes the roster for the WC games unless some of the D on the prelim list that are now available (e.g., Suter, Meyer) decline invites.
