devils sign andy greenelucscaps 04-04-2006, 04:53 PM http://newjerseydevils.com/2005/html/theteam/teamnews/greene030406.php Brooklyndevil 04-04-2006, 04:58 PM Hoping for another Rafalski? Anyway, we need as many defensemen as possible in our system. Good luck to the young man! TaiMaiShu 04-04-2006, 05:39 PM looks like great news thefiestygoat 04-04-2006, 05:59 PM I didn't know anything about him till I read the Devils press announcement. Seems like a decent addition. Had decent offensive numbers for a defenseman. I wonder what the scouting report on his defensive game is? Seems like he must be decent considering all of those awards that he won. Do we see him in Albany before the end of their season? ratsgirl 04-04-2006, 06:03 PM HF's Andy Greene Profile (http://hockeysfuture.com/prospect.php?pid=4579) Jared Ramsden 04-04-2006, 06:36 PM Hoping for another Rafalski? Anyway, we need as many defensemen as possible in our system. Good luck to the young man! Doesn't hurt to add another blueliner to the system. Sounds like a decent prospect to add to the team..... David Puddy 04-04-2006, 07:06 PM USCH.com has also named Andy Greene to its 2005-06 All-USCHO First Team (LINK (http://www.uscho.com/news/id,12523/DenversCarleNamedPlayerOfYearAsAllUSCHOHonorsAnnou nced.html).) And here is his page at MU (http://muredhawks.cstv.com/sports/m-hockey/mtt/greene_andy00.html), which is almost the same as his HF page, but we learn about his personal information. Did you know that his major in college was education? Lastly, here is a link to an article (http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-hockey/stories/040406aaj.html) about the signing from CSTV.com. Brooklyndevil 04-04-2006, 07:52 PM Doesn't hurt to add another blueliner to the system. Sounds like a decent prospect to add to the team..... Also look's like the kid wore the C, which is always a good sign. borrachon 04-04-2006, 08:28 PM Sounds like a good addition, but when it comes to our defensive prospects there's no such thing as a bad addition. Devilsfanatic 04-04-2006, 10:16 PM Hometown: Trenton, Michigan :shakehead surprise Niedermayer21 04-05-2006, 12:44 AM I say let's retire Ken Klee and give Greene his number. Too bad the kid can't play in the post-season. He probably needs some time at Albany next season. He can't even play in Albany this season. So he can practice with the big team. I like this signing very much. Now, are there any other college free agents who Lou could sign? And do you think Travis Zajac will be signed after the Frozen Four is finished? BTW, should Lou sign Jordan Parise? I say no, but if he can be one of the top two goalies in Albany next season, it may be worth it. Still, Marty should be here for quite a while. As long as he stays healthy, he will honor his contract and could play until he is 40. We just need a reliable backup for him and one good goalie in Albany. Later... Jason MacIsaac 04-05-2006, 12:54 AM An Impressive signing, Greene is simply an amazing defensmen. Very smart and amazing at both ends of the ice. Belizarius 04-05-2006, 02:45 AM He was one of the best NCAA free agent... probably the best defenseman available. It's an awesome signing! I was hoping to see his name called by the Devils and I really LOVE this news. Great!!!! :) Some impressive notes : http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2006/04/04_greene.php Greene finished his collegiate career as arguably the best defenseman to ever skate in a Miami uniform; he was just the fourth blueliner in program history to pass the 100-point plateau, with 27-87—114. He finished his career as Miami's all-time leader in games played and consecutive games played, appearing in all 159 games during his time in Oxford. Serving as one of Miami's captains for his final three seasons, Greene led the RedHawks to two NCAA tournament appearances. A native of Trenton, Mich., Greene became the first player in the history of the CCHA to earn both the league's Best Offensive and Defensive Defenseman awards in the same season. His reaction : ]"I don't think it has quite sunk in yet, but it is definitely a dream come true," said Greene. "I am looking forward to getting on the ice and trying to help the Devils win games." BrondbyDK 04-05-2006, 07:54 AM Too bad the kid can't play in the post-season. He probably needs some time at Albany next season. He can't even play in Albany this season. So he can practice with the big team. ... Why can't he play this season? Devilsfanatic 04-05-2006, 07:59 AM Why can't he play this season? CBA sanction. mrmain18 04-05-2006, 09:21 AM That's a great signing for the Devils. I have watched Andy play at Miami for a couple years now. He is solid on both ends of the ice. He actually was named Best Defensive Defenseman and Best Offensive Defenseman in the CCHA this year. I do think he will need some time in the AHL, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him with the Devils full-time in 07-08. JimEIV 04-05-2006, 10:44 AM CBA sanction. That stinks! I remember Rob Blake came out of Bowlin Green right after school and joined LA to Cup run BrondbyDK 04-05-2006, 11:09 AM CBA sanction. So why can Bill Thomas and Co. play? Was there a certain deadline? Belizarius 04-05-2006, 11:16 AM Bill Thomas can play in the NHL, same with Ryan Potulny, but they can't play in the AHL. Other guys, like Atherthon (TB) signed an AHL tryout so they can play as this level... Brooklyndevil 04-05-2006, 11:30 AM How about if Lou signs Zajac next week, woudl he be able to play for the Devils? Devilsfanatic 04-05-2006, 02:56 PM How about if Lou signs Zajac next week, woudl he be able to play for the Devils? Yes, all these guys are eligible for the NHL roster BEFORE the season ends, so 5 or 6 games, they CAN NOT play during the playoffs. Jared Ramsden 04-05-2006, 05:51 PM That's a great signing for the Devils. To win both best Defensive AND Offensive Defenseman award is quite a feat. That alone has to speak volumes about his well rounded play. With the shallow pool of prospects on the blueline in the system, Greene probably has a good chance to make an instant impact in the organization..... devsfan8 04-05-2006, 06:44 PM Everything I am reading about Andy Greene is very encouraging. This is the first step of what I hope is many in fixing the lack of depth situation on defense. What is interesting abut Greene in reading one of the links above is not only is he not allowed to play in the post season this year, but he also cannot be sent to Albany. HE MUST remain with the Devils the rest of the season. He will likely not play down the stretch unless we clinch a spot. To risky to play a guy who has never seen NHL action. Nevertheless I am liking what I hear. He is one of the top defensive prospects and certainly a top CCHA Defensive prospect winning all types of awards. He also has 2 brothers..Shane and Matt. Is this the brother of Vancouver's 4th line center Matt Greene? Blackjack 04-05-2006, 07:14 PM This is stupid, he's obviously too small to be a defenseman. (http://www.nhl.com/players/8467856.html) You've got to be at least 6 feet to be effective in the NHL. (http://www.nhl.com/players/8468639.html) In all seriousness, I really like this signing. I think too often, overagers just aren't considered. Obviously he has a tough road ahead, but he seems to have the tool. Good luck. TaiMaiShu 04-05-2006, 09:04 PM so does he jump to the top of our D prospects? Niedermayer21 04-06-2006, 12:38 AM Was there any mention of Andy Greene's signing during the Devils pre-game show, which I missed because I was out food shopping? OCD 04-06-2006, 03:22 AM if he is listed as 5' 10" and 186 pounds, does that meas he is really 5' 8" and 168 pounds? :dunno: if he turns out to be a diamond in the rough like rafalski that would be sweet! Devilsfanatic 04-06-2006, 02:39 PM if he is listed as 5' 10" and 186 pounds, does that meas he is really 5' 8" and 168 pounds? :dunno: if he turns out to be a diamond in the rough like rafalski that would be sweet! Unlike Rafalski, he's only 23, so we get him early. Jared Ramsden 04-06-2006, 08:08 PM so does he jump to the top of our D prospects? Very close IMO....Fraser and Greene are probably the top two defense prospects in the system at the moment.... NJ_Devil_Boy 04-07-2006, 04:30 AM In the new NHL, there really isn't a huge need for big physical d-man anymore. You need guys who can skate, and keep up with the quick forwards. If you can chip in on offense, that is a huge bonus. NJDraft 04-07-2006, 04:33 AM I'm a little surprised because LL usually doesn't bid for these UFA college guys who are usually undersized (or they would have been drafted) but he must have had a few competitors for http://ccha.cstv.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/040506aab.html services. This kid sounds like Tom Preissing(CC)who signed with SJ '05. The UND board seems to think Zajack will almost certainally sign and not return for a Jr. year. JDevils3 04-07-2006, 01:31 PM Very close IMO....Fraser and Greene are probably the top two defense prospects in the system at the moment.... Here's my 2 cents on Andy Greene. I havent seen Fraser play, only know him by what I have read. I know they are very different players. That being said I would be suprised if Fraser is a as good a player as Andy Greene. I watched him alot over the years and I think he compares favorably to Freddy Meyer(who I think is a very good player). David Puddy 04-07-2006, 03:28 PM I mistakenly put this in the Zajac Frozen 4 thread because I was rushing at lunch time: Rich Chere and Bridget Wentworth write about the Greene signing in their article, "Albany calls N.J. real rats (http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1144300241155590.xml&coll=1)," in The Star-Ledger on Thursday,Greene, 23, signed a two-year deal at $850,000 per season. A total of $85,000 of that is a signing bonus for this season. There have been comparisons to Brian Rafalski. "You look at Brian Rafalski, a small guy like I am, and I try to play similar to him," Greene said. "You just take other people's games and model yours to certain aspects of it." NHL rules prohibit Greene from playing in the AHL. He is eligible to play in the NHL regular season but not the playoffs. For now, he'll soak up the atmosphere. Belizarius 05-03-2006, 08:01 AM Andy Greene played for team USA vs Slovenia in an exhibition game before the World Championship. I don't think he's going to make the roster and was probably more invited to complete the team for this game, but still it's an interesting experience for him. :) Jason MacIsaac 05-03-2006, 10:59 AM Andy Greene played for team USA vs Slovenia in an exhibition game before the World Championship. I don't think he's going to make the roster and was probably more invited to complete the team for this game, but still it's an interesting experience for him. :) You never know....that USA team did excellent against Slovakia. Had I known he was going to be playing I would have watched. sk84fun_dc 05-03-2006, 11:29 AM You never know....that USA team did excellent against Slovakia. Had I known he was going to be playing I would have watched. FYI, Slovakia is not the same country as Slovenia. Back to Greene, I agree it is a good experience for him, but I doubt he makes the roster for the WC games unless some of the D on the prelim list that are now available (e.g., Suter, Meyer) decline invites. Yes I know they are different countries....simply a misread. sk84fun_dc 05-03-2006, 12:29 PM Yes I know they are different countries....simply a misread. I assumed you knew they were two different countries, sorry I did not add a smilay, but this mistake seems to get made by a lot of posters. | ||
