He has shown a nice improvement in offensive production. But more importantly, he has played really well in his defensive-zone as part of the Madden Unit (the ideal is to get Madden's line out there with White and Martin on the blueline.)
4check22 04-03-2006, 08:28 AM The biggest stat in my opinion to judge how he has progressed is ice time. He is getting nearly 24 minutes this year compared to around 15 minutes as a rookie. He is only going to get better, and right now he is a top-4 defenseman on most teams in the league.
Drewr15 04-03-2006, 10:26 AM Definitely the defensive play in his zone has been a fantastic improvement. Not that he was bad but I'm amazed at how solid he has become.
TaiMaiShu 04-03-2006, 05:47 PM He has been pretty solid all year. just a couple of bad games earlier in the year but he is progressing really well. Defenseively he has been pretty amazing. i lost count of how many times he saved a goal for the devils this year by going down to block shots.
Feed Me A Stray Cat 04-03-2006, 05:51 PM Very pleased with Martin's play this year. He has been very solid in the defensive zone for the most part.
Jared Ramsden 04-04-2006, 01:25 AM He's developing at a very nice pace, and is quietly putting together a solid all-around season. And he's only going to get better.....
Easton 04-04-2006, 01:46 AM I haven't really focused on Martin this year mainly because he's been so quiet even though he's logging on a ton of minutes every game. I'd like to see him jump in the play more like Raffy does but I guess that'll come as he gains more and more confidence. He's asked to play a lot of minutes for a second-year D.
The Omen* 04-04-2006, 06:48 PM I remember when moron's in this site where comparing him to Neids. What a joke. :biglaugh: He's ok but he will never and should never be compare to Nieds.

To be fair here, NJ Devils own professional scouts made the inevitable Niedermayer-Martin and Stevens-Hale comparisons right after both were drafted. Said comparisons were written up in the local Jersey papers following this right or wrong.
Drewr15 04-05-2006, 12:30 PM Actually the Devil defenseman Martin reminds me of the most so far is Bruce Driver.

nice call

I'd take that career from him in a heartbeat.

You should also know being a hockey fan that there is an adjustment period for defenseman. It is not a postion you can jump right into and be effective. Colin White struggled earlier in his career and has gradually turned into a premier defenseman (atleast in my opinion).
Paul Martin will anchor the blueline in the near future. He will be our best defenseman. To say right now he is comparable to scott Niedermayer is no fair because Nieds is the top D-Man in hockey, but Martin who has forechecked much better, rached up 30 assists, played smart defensively, and made it as a reserve Olympian is a future top 2 defenseman on any team.

Good post, but what do you mean by forechecked? Like, pinched in the offensive zone?

He has pinched in the offensive zone and also made it hard to cross the blueline into the attack zone. He has been in good position and stuck to his man more and more after showing signs of young struggles. He has gradually gotten better at this. I really like Colin White and Paul MArtin as tandem and they will eventually be our top line defensive pairing.
And, like Unthinkable mentioned..it was the media that notioned he can be compared to Niedermayer in the way he plays. they never mentioned he would be better tthen Niedermayer and if they thought he would be then I assume the media who covers this sport knows enough to realize that would be down the road and not right away.
rwhite 04-05-2006, 07:13 PM I agree. I watched them live together in Ottawa last week and they played well together except for a few penalties that Colin took but they were questionable at best.
devsfan8 04-06-2006, 09:17 AM I'd take that career from him in a heartbeat.
I hope Martin never decides to sign across the river.

Well you know.. other than that part. ;)
