Varius 03-23-2006, 09:31 PM I was checking out the UFA list for left-wings, and the one that seems like he could be a nice short-term option for us could be Shanahan.
Obviously, this is only *IF* he doesn't stay with DET, which I think pretty likely that he will and will retire there. However he is getting up there in age, so maybe they'd let him go. Or who knows, maybe if the Wings fall out of the playoffs early he won't be happy with them for some reason.
I think we should offer him a one-year deal, maybe around 2 million ? Similar to the deal we gave Selanne this year (just more money) - which we all know how awesome that worked out.
Shanahan definately has the character Burke wants. A line of Shanahan - McDonald - Selanne could be great. Or maybe he'd play alongside Getz and Perry and teach them a few tricks.
Your thoughts???
BraveSirRobin 03-23-2006, 09:39 PM It's a nice dream, but I don't see him leaving Detroit. He just means a lot to that franchise. But then again anything could happen...
lux_interior 03-23-2006, 10:53 PM I don't really like the guy...so I hope not. Plus he's on the downside of his career.

Not really, he's on pace to score the most goals he's scored in 5 seasons. He's still got 2-3 good years left in him at a 20 goal scorer.

uh, he's definitely in the twilight of his career. i'm not saying he's not still good, but gone are the days where you lean on Shanny for offense.
all that said, like most other people, i don't see him leaving detroit.
McDonald19 03-24-2006, 01:24 AM no thanks.
we would have to overpay by a lot to get him to leave Detroit, and he is not worth it.
sammyp 03-24-2006, 01:36 AM I don't think Shanny would be good for the Ducks. I'd rather have a young winger to work with. Here's some other UFA options:
Maxim Afinogenov
Eric Daze
Sergei Samsonov
Mark Parrish
Patrik Elias
Viktor Kozlov
Martin Rucinsky
Geoff Sanderson

Afinogenov I think is a RFA.
Daze should retire, his back is messed up.
Samsonov is going to get overpayment from somebody, 5 million a year, hope it's not us.
Parrish hasn't looked impressive for the Kings so far.
Elias will get a ton of cash, 6 million maybe. I don't want to get in that bidding war.
Kozlov I've never liked.
Rucinsky probably not a good fit here.
Sanderson I'd offer a 1 year contract to for that 2nd line Left Wing spot. He may be staying in Phoenix since they did not trade him at the deadline.

pass on everything on that list
TheJoeMan 03-24-2006, 03:16 AM I hate Shannahan. Totally hate him, badly. Even if he agreed to play for the league minimun I wouldn't want him on this team. He cries a lot to the refs, takes cheap shots and is old. I will give him credit for the work he did during the lockout to improve the game and I'm sure he's a real nice guy as far as the guy on the ice he can go to hell.
We have a ton of guys that are gonna be RFA's and will need big raises so I think Burke might make one forward signing and I don't think it'll be anyone spectacular with all the young talent we have coming up. I wouldn't mind seeing Elias here if could get him cheap but that won't happen.
Pwnasaurus 03-24-2006, 10:05 AM pass on everything on that list
agreed.
MightyAdam 03-24-2006, 01:02 PM this guy is way too old probably for Burke's style. Burke wants a fast, youthful team, with a few fast Veteran's like Selanne and Niedermeyer.
With Vancouver, did he ever go after older players? Need only look to his past to see what he might do in the present.
sammyp 03-24-2006, 06:50 PM pass on everything on that list
It's definitely not a good FA crop for wingers. Too bad that's the Ducks biggest need at the moment.
afterhours 03-26-2006, 07:07 AM Shanahan? I'll pass on that one.
Duckstudd269 03-26-2006, 01:31 PM If the price is right then I'm all for it. If it takes a lot to get him, I say pass.

You don't even watch hockey, do you?

Yeah, 40 goals and 80 points and a guy who would go along way into helping guys like Getzlaf and Perrey develop; why would you want that?
Johnny Danger 04-17-2006, 09:57 AM shanny will stay with the wings
TheJoeMan 04-17-2006, 01:45 PM You don't even watch hockey, do you?
Ha! That's funny, I should have my girlfriend make this arguement for me. Trust me I watch a LOT of hockey.
I guess you like Shannahan too much because every time we play Detroit, everytime, he gets a penalty he's crying out it to the refs. He also takes cheap shots all the time. I've see him drop his glove just to punch a guy in the face during a scrum like three times. I really really dislike the guy.
It's a moot arguement anyways. Why would Shannahan leave the best team in the league whom he was played for for a decade and has had the best success of his career? He's not going anywhere and definitely not here. Remember how thrilled he was went he was traded to Hartford? I can tell you he's ver picky about where he plays.
Pwnasaurus 04-17-2006, 01:51 PM Digital Monkey...you the same digital monkey from DN's FCP board?
afterhours 04-17-2006, 06:12 PM Yeah, 40 goals and 80 points and a guy who would go along way into helping guys like Getzlaf and Perrey develop; why would you want that?
Hmm... we have cap space and the luxury of adding instead of replacing and we want to pay $3M+ for a 37 year old who can't create for himself? That's a no-brainer to you?
Maybe you forgot that Fedorov had 83 pts before joining the Ducks and Vaclav Prospal had 79 pts?
It's about FIT. We have veteran leadership already in Teemu Selanne, there is no need to bring on a mentor. What we need is a playmaker that can either set up guys like Lupul or score himself. Experience is merely an addition not a necessity.
I'll take a Savard over Shanahan any day of the week.
Drudkh 04-17-2006, 06:28 PM Elias would be an exciting fit with Mcdonald and Selanne, but as others have noted, he is going to be the top priority for several teams.
