Making Room For Anaheim--3/13 to 3/19

As we all know, our Ducks have made a terrific run to get themselves back into the playoff picture. But, the Ducks have the toughest schedule remaining and will need to focus on each game one by one, and do some scoreboard watching in the process.

Note- Colorado is in the #3 seed at the moment, but there is still a better chance in catching them than Nashville or Calgary, the #4/5 seeds at the moment.

well they have to beat the teams below them(CHI/CBJ) and hopefully steal a point or two in Detroit. The last time the ducks played Detroit they played as badly as they have in some time, so revenge would be sweet. they also have a few days off.

You might as well include Calgary in that mix since they are one behind Colorado.

Hard to figure out who to root for in tommorow's LA/SJ game. If San Jose wins, LA is 3 points up with the Ducks having three games in hand but then the Sharks are only 3 back. Same with Colorado/Calgary, although I guess it's better if Colorado wins since they are the current division leader. Hopefully Dallas can take another game from the Nucks in regulation.

Calgary has the 3 games in hand on Colorado though. I'd say Calgary is going to win that division.

The way the Ducks have been playing as of late, I would not be surprized if they beat Detroit. Then, they should definitely win the Chicago game. Yeah, they lost in Overtime last time, but I think they should defintely take care of Colmbust this time. And then with Dallas, I think the Ducks will have extra drive to beat them since Dallas has owned Anaheim this season so far.

Some might call me crazy, but I would not be surprizd at all if the Ducks win all 4 games of this road trip! Its all about momentum. With a win against Detroit and one against an easy team like Chicago, the Ducks will have the momentum to go into Columbus and take care of business. Then, going into Dallas, they will have momentum of a 6 game winning streak. That should give them the confidence they will need to take care of Dallas.

And so after this road trip, the Ducks will only have 15 games left. The good news after this road trip (which should be a successful one) is that of the remaining 15 games they will have left after the road trip, 7 of them will be at home. And there is another one which will be played in LA (which can be argued is sorta like a home game since there will be lots of Ducks fans in the LA arena as well). And so, if the Ducks can take care of business on this road trip, I think they will be in great shape down the stretch!

There are no easy teams this time of year. Just ask the Oilers, who have dropped 3 straight against teams not in playoff position, including Columbus.

Calgary 3 Colorado 0 ..late in the 2nd.

probably the best score there even though Colorado had more points than Calgary coming into this game...because of games in hand we would be more likely to catch Colorado.

if the score holds up Colorado would have 80 points with only 15 games left...and Calgary would have 81 points with 18 games left.

Well it wouldn't be too fair to start the playoffs when one team has played less games though huh? Technically wins is the first tie-breaker yeah.

but right now the standings show the Ducks in the 8th spot because of their games in hand, though TSN's standings put them both at 8 with Edmonton above Anaheim because they are biased for any Canadian team of course.

The Ducks will play 5 games the next 7 days. That is a real tough stretch so catching Calgary is going to be a tough. I'm more worried about the Sharks tailing our back. Minnesota IMO is out of the race. Its a 10 team race for the West.

Yeah I doubt we will catch Calgary but thought it was worth reporting the score.

ended up being 9-4 Nashville.

Wish the Stars and Wings would have won in regulation instead of letting the Sharks and Oilers get points.

San Jose will make it, they have such an easy schedule. So do the Oilers, I have them both making it and have the ducks, kings, canucks, avs fighting for two spots.

why? from these 17 games, we play 8x against teams which we are fighting for the last playoff spot...we need to win most of these games, that will be the key!

McDonald19
03-19-2006, 04:41 AM
The good news is that was the last weak opponent for the Kings (they do play the Coyotes in Phoenix April 13th but I don't see that as an easy opponent for them).

and they only have 13 games left...if 96 points is the magic number they need 17 points in 13 games...which is 8-4-1...and that's if 96 points is enough.

what 8 games do you see the Kings winning?

3-20 Colorado (home)
3-25 Nashville (home)
3-27 Vancouver (road)
3-29 Calgary (road)
3-30 Edmonton (road)
4-1 Dallas (home)
4-3 Vancouver (home)
4-4 Anaheim (road)
4-6 San Jose (home)
4-8 Anaheim (home)
4-13 Phoenix (road)
4-15 Calgary (home)
4-17 San Jose (road)

I know the Ducks schedule is even worse...but with the way the Kings have been playing does anyone see them winning 8 of those games?

McDonald19

General Manager Brian Burke has said he thought 95 or 96 points may be enough to qualify for the playoffs. To do that, the Ducks will need to finish either 8-6-3 or 9-7-1 in their final 17 games.

Defenseman Scott Niedermayer suspects the point total may need to be higher. "The number to get in the playoffs is going to be pretty high," he said. "Really high. There's a lot of quality teams."

Ruslan Salei, the club's longest-tenured player, doesn't try to figure out point scenarios: "I just focus on each game. I don't really focus on how many points we need. We just need to win games and if we do that, you can move yourself up."

I don't know about 96 points being the magic number...

8-6-3 and 9-7-1 don't sound that difficult, it may take more.

Hockeyfan02
03-19-2006, 11:30 AM
If this team deserves to make the playoffs they will do well over this last stretch of the season. One thing in the Ducks favor is the games in hand they have on other teams. The two games they have to win are against Phoenix and Columbus, they can not get one or 0 points out of their two easiest opponents. Also, they need to get points out of the Dallas games. Dallas owns this team, but if they can squeak out a win and get two OTLs that would be ideal. This will be a good experience for the young kids because almost every game is going to be like a playoff game.

The Coyotes game isn't much of interest. They are 14 points out of the playoffs with a game in hand. They would need to go on a major run to make the playoffs. The west has pretty much become a 10 team race with only Detroit, Dallas, and Nashville having a comfortable playoff position.

Yeah, its better that they win being there are two-three other teams the Ducks can possibly pass, while the Sharks are the only real threat behind them.

I think it's good that it was decided in regulation, but bad that San Jose won. We are only two points back of Colorado with two games in hand, but this also puts San Jose only two points back of us.

Thank god the Wings jumped out to a nice lead over Vancouver. Sucks that they let Edmonton get a point last night, but, they'd redeem themselves for keeping Vancouver from gaining anymore ground.

Not to go off topic but I noticed home attendance has been pretty good the past few months. We were only getting 12-13k the first couple of months of the season but now, we are averaging about 15-16k a game. Put an exciting product on the ice and people will come and watch.

San Jose is playing as well as any team right now. On one hand, they are competing against us for a playoff spot. On the other hand, San Jose is pushing us to play hard every night and helping us gain ground.

I'm glad SJ took it. It's better for the guys above you to lose when you must bypass at least one of them. Besides, I think SJ doesn't have the stuff to take us, and we can handle SJ (1 game) better than we can handle the Avs (2 games). I think Van/Edm/LA are the softer touches.

What a crazy playoff race in the west. I was just looking at the standings and 4 points separate the 5th seed to 10th. It's crazy. We are 2 points out of 5th. All the teams play each other down the stretch, most play multiple games against each other.

It will be an interesting 3 games for the Canucks and Oilers. Vancouver pretty much looks down and out right now, they take that series and their back, they lose that series and it could seal their fate.

Colorado is in L.A tomorrow and then at the pond Wednesday. We also visit them next week I believe. If Tanguay is out their offence could struggle and their goaltending is suspect.

San Jose is coming on strong, and of their next 7 games, only 1 is against a playoff contender which is pretty sad. I never knew how easy their sched was. L.A. is a toss up who knows if they will go out and win 6-2 or lose 6-2. They havn't been playing to well lately but I still never know what to expect from them.

Then you look over at the east and watch Montreal/Atlanta battle and it is nowhere near the same.

If the GP column was equal, I'd definitely have the 'Nucks over the Ducks. You've got to assume that the Ducks will manage to get one point out of those three games in hand though

As we all know, our Ducks have made a terrific run to get themselves back into the playoff picture. But, the Ducks have the toughest schedule remaining and will need to focus on each game one by one, and do some scoreboard watching in the process.

did you know that the best thing a team can have going for them into the playoffs is a tough schedule prior to the start?

this is proven as most often successful playoff teams are usually ones that have it tough before the playoffs start... my guess is that it gets their playing level elevated and makes them more careful in avoiding costly mistakes.

this i disagree with... the canucks already played those 3 games and coulda put themselves ahead 6 points if they wished... the canucks simply aren't winning enough games.

I was always more of a believer in playing the team higher in the standings at the end of the year rather than the non-playoff teams because the teams high in the standings will be using the last week of the season (at times) to rest certain guys, take shorter shifts assuming seeding for them is all but locked up...it's those teams like Chicago, Columbus, Pittsburgh, etc that can really play a spoiler role as kids look to make an impact by playing as hard as possible to catch a coach's eye as they know often times a role for them for next season could be on the line. They are also playing for pride which can at times be the most dangerous opponent.
