I'm not sure if I like this, he can't play in the AHL next season, so he'll have to be in the NHL. There's little point on signing him if he's going back to the OHL...

No there's not. Signing him now means you don't have to worry about him re-entering the draft or becoming UFA next summer. You gotta sign him sometime or lose him.
Kevin Forbes 03-08-2006, 02:02 PM Remember, this doesn't mean he'll have to be in the NHL next season. Robbie Schremp has an NHL contract and is playing OHL hockey. It's simply one less thing that Anaheim has to worry about in the future. The first of the three years doesn't come into effect until Ryan plays 9? games in a season. He could start the year with Anaheim and then be returned to junior
For Ryan's sake, hopefully this will energize him. He's gone cold since the WJCs.

I didn't know about that. I though that the first year started when the contract was signed. It makes sense now.
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 03:38 PM This is good news, even though he's been disappointing so far.

How has he been disappointing? He's virtually all of the offense on a middle-of-the-road Owen Sound team and is putting up great numbers. He's fallen off a bit since the WJC's, but I don't think anyone should put that much stock in that.
McDonald19 03-08-2006, 04:51 PM This is great news!
Now he doesn't have to worry about the contract anymore he can work hard and be ready to impress at next training camp. He can stay the entire camp and then they can still send him back to the OHL for one more year if his camp isn't overwhelming and the entry contract can start for the 07-08 season.

nope. It's a nice loophole that allows you to take a 9 game look at a young player. Colorado also did that with Wolski.

how do you mean?
He dominated the first half of the OHL season.
He's ran out of gas a bit that's all, he just needs to work on his conditioning.
Randall Graves* 03-08-2006, 04:54 PM This is good news, even though he's been disappointing so far.
Considering the talent level on his team he's had a very good season. He's had a cold second half, that could simply be him not being in good enough shape to handle that, since he is basically OS offense. I don't think this is unusual for an 18 year old.
MetalMilitia 03-08-2006, 05:34 PM Bobby Ryan has had an amazing year so far. Sure he has struck a cold spot, but who doesn't really?. Bobby Ryan is so good that he has turned Mike Angelidas into a 50-goal scorer (52 to be exact). For anyone who doesn't follow the OHL, that is like turning Wayne Primeau into a 50 goal scorer. Bobby has turned Jeff Kyrzakos into a 70+ point getter (78 to be exact)...last season he had only 7 points (granted it was only in 27 games).

I heard he had an ankle problem, how serious is it?
Does he just look like he's out of gas? guys not finishing?
S.S. Giggy 03-08-2006, 07:52 PM I think his inconsistency has something to do with his skating ability. If he won't be able to score that much if he can't get to the puck first.

Did tonight's Pirates game for the Portland Press Herald, and with most of the AHL office on hand, got the skinny on Ryan's AHL availability this year...He can join Portland once the seasons of both Owen Sound and Anaheim are done. He can be signed to an ATO, and also, does not have to be on the Pirates' "Clear Day" list submitted to the AHL next Monday...hope this helps....
Jerky Leclerc 03-08-2006, 11:43 PM Good move by the Ducks to sign Ryan. Now he got some money, he can concentrate on playing better and developing as a professional.
Kevin Forbes 03-09-2006, 12:03 AM Great point Jerky,
there's an article on HF about Washington prospect defenseman Jeff Schultz talking about how relaxed he is playing junior now that he has a contract

At times it seems like he has an injury of some sort, and at others it seems like he is just not motivated, so if he does indeed have an ankle injury, it wouldn't be too serious. He has been looking like the post-WJC Bobby lately, which is good news obviously. He is dangling and driving the net more, with a lot less turnovers.
