General Manager Brian Burke on Monday said he has been working to add another proven scorer and has been given the green light to increase the payroll if needed. The Ducks have about $4.5 million available under the salary cap.
While he wouldn't comment on any individual players because of tampering issues, Burke indicated he is trying to acquire a second-line center or an experienced winger. Either would address the team's glaring need for another scoring threat to take some pressure off leading scorer Teemu Selanne and center Andy McDonald
"It would be a top-six forward," Burke said. "Those deals aren't easy to make. There aren't many of those guys out there."
A possible target would be Phoenix left wing Geoff Sanderson, whose speed and goal-scoring ability fits the Ducks' template and might not cost them one of their top young players.
...The Ducks are said to be looking at Chicago center Tyler Arnason, according to a source.

Oh well, I can always dream.
Ryan, Mikkelson and a 1st rounder for Tuomo Ruutu.
Oh well, I can always dream.
Hasn't that guy been injured "most" of his time in the NHL?
Chistov23 03-07-2006, 01:21 PM HUGE game tonight. A win puts us 6 points up on the Sharks.
With Edmonton, L.A and Colorado all playing tonight it is a great opportunity to maybe make up some ground and a great night to have center ice.
bleuer 03-07-2006, 01:37 PM Ryan, Mikkelson and a 1st rounder for Tuomo Ruutu.
Oh well, I can always dream.
NEVER! Ruutu is worse than Bure with his injuries...
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 03:24 PM Ryan, Mikkelson and a 1st rounder for Tuomo Ruutu.
Oh well, I can always dream.
eww that's terrible even if Ruutu wasn't injured all the time.
Pepper 03-07-2006, 04:30 PM eww that's terrible even if Ruutu wasn't injured all the time.
If Ruutu wasn't injured so often, the price would be much higher.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 04:34 PM If Ruutu wasn't injured so often, the price would be much higher.
that's one bidding war I'd be glad to stay out of.
Randall Graves* 03-07-2006, 06:37 PM Very important to start off fast tonight, the sharks have lost a few games and are terrible when giving up the first goal. We can't have any more of these going through the motion periods..
lux_interior 03-07-2006, 08:01 PM Ryan, Mikkelson and a 1st rounder for Tuomo Ruutu.
Oh well, I can always dream.
Wow. If you were the Ducks GM you'd put Burke to shame.
In terms of overpaying.
Spankatola Jamnuts 03-07-2006, 08:23 PM He is awfully Finnish.
sammyp 03-07-2006, 08:38 PM Ryan, Mikkelson and a 1st rounder for Tuomo Ruutu.
Oh well, I can always dream.
I'll agree with the field on this one, terrible deal for the Ducks.
I'd do Rome + 3rd/4th rounder for Sanderson.
MightyAdam 03-07-2006, 09:00 PM would like to see Selanna score a hat trick to reach 30 goals tonight!
lux_interior 03-07-2006, 09:13 PM He is awfully Finnish.
Well we do need someone who can finish.
Well we do need someone who can finish.
Let's just hope we don't end up with someone who's finished.
lux_interior 03-07-2006, 09:43 PM Precisely.
Randall Graves* 03-07-2006, 09:46 PM I'll agree with the field on this one, terrible deal for the Ducks.
I'd do Rome + 3rd/4th rounder for Sanderson.
With Jordans unfortunate injury we should keep Rome and O'brien IMO..
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 09:51 PM I'll agree with the field on this one, terrible deal for the Ducks.
I'd do Rome + 3rd/4th rounder for Sanderson.
3rd rounder might do it. I don't think I'd throw Rome in.
sammyp 03-07-2006, 09:58 PM 3rd rounder might do it. I don't think I'd throw Rome in.
Well I think a third alone isn't enough.
If McAmmond=3rd, then Sanderson=?
If a 3rd AND Rome is too much, then maybe Pohanka and a 3rd?
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 10:00 PM If a 3rd AND Rome is too much, then maybe Pohanka and a 3rd?
yeah I'd throw Pohanka in, don't know if that helps the trade at all from Phoenix's point of view.
sammyp 03-07-2006, 10:06 PM yeah I'd throw Pohanka in, don't know if that helps the trade at all from Phoenix's point of view.
That's what I was thinking too. There's just not much in between Pohanka and Rome.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 10:08 PM pre-game, Burke interview:
-Burke says he's changing his vote, he is now in favor of mandatory visors being grandfathered in.
-Talking about it being harder to make deals this year.
-Says it used to be get something for your UFA's at the deadline, now you can't do that anymore.
-He's looking for a top 6 forward this week. Say's that deal won't be easy to make.
-saying draft picks don't have much value, and it's a weak draft.
-Talked about how he wanted a more blue collar team and that's why Fedorov and Sykora had to go.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 10:11 PM McDonald has a stiff neck from the Richardson hit, nothing concussion related though.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 10:52 PM Keith Carney is in the lineup tonight, after leaving last game early with back spasms.
braincramp 03-07-2006, 10:55 PM Lupul!
Hockeyfan02 03-07-2006, 10:55 PM Lupul scores with a laser off the post. 1-0!

1-0 Ducks
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 10:55 PM Lupul did hyperextend his knee a bit on that Richardson hit.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 11:11 PM 3 good shorthanded scoring chances for the Ducks on the first Sharks powerplay.
Spankatola Jamnuts 03-07-2006, 11:26 PM Pretty good period. The Sharks' 1-4 is pretty tough to crack but I thought they did a good job for the most part. It would be nice if Kunitz could get on the board tonight.
Hockeyfan02 03-07-2006, 11:29 PM Sharks score. Tipped point shot.
Ducksforcup 03-07-2006, 11:30 PM Sharks score. Tipped point shot.
No chance for Jigger.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 11:37 PM the refs are at it again...
marginal call gives the Sharks a 5 on 3 for 1:30
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 11:39 PM man they had that all but killed off and it barely sneaks over the line.
2-1 sharks
Hockeyfan02 03-07-2006, 11:40 PM Ugh. Giggy makes the save. 3 guys around the play and Cheechoo pokes it past Giguere. Someone has to clear the puck. 2-1 sharks.
Ducksforcup 03-07-2006, 11:46 PM Ducks need something to turn them around....now. :help:
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 11:51 PM I still say this team lacks energy...put Moen in the lineup and sit Penner. It's not like Penner is doing anything.
The Ducks announcers mentioned that Carlyle said he wasn't happy with a few players and he would make some changes if he has to and that there are 3 healthy players eager to play.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 11:53 PM cheap play by Davison on Rob Niedermayer after the whistle...
Beauchemin came in there and gave Davison a little shot...
at some point just drop the gloves, this team could use a spark.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 11:54 PM heres that 5 on 3 for the Ducks to make up for the one the Sharks got.
McDonald19 03-07-2006, 11:55 PM Andy Mac
2-2
Ducksforcup 03-07-2006, 11:55 PM Ducks Score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hockeyfan02 03-08-2006, 12:46 AM And then they tie it again.
McDonald19 03-08-2006, 12:48 AM I hate to always be on Giguere's case...but we really could have used a big save there.
He's had a good game so far...but we needed a big save there.
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 12:49 AM Boy, Bernier has had a good game, and had tons of chances. He finally scored.
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 12:50 AM Yay!!!!!!!!! We take another penalty!!! WooHooo!! Come to the Pond and watch the Ducks kill penalties!!! And Pahlsson's off too, our best PK'er.
I hate to always be on Giguere's case...but we really could have used a big save there.
He's had a good game so far...but we needed a big save there.
What we really needed was not to let a guy come in all alone one shift after taking a lead.
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 12:52 AM I guess I screwed up the page when I went nuts with those exclamation points.
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 12:53 AM What we really needed was not to let a guy come in all alone one shift after taking a lead.
Yeah...it's not like it was a soft goal or anything. Pretty high percentage part of the ice. I would blame the skaters before Giguere.
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 12:54 AM God. I thought for sure Rusty was going to take a penalty in the defensive zone there.
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 12:58 AM Should they still be saying "Got good wood on that shot"? Shouldn't they say "Got good graphite on that shot."
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 01:01 AM Selanne sure likes to push the envelope on the offside call.
YUGE extra point tonight. If I expect the Ducks to lose in OT/Shootout, will that make them win?
McDonald19 03-08-2006, 01:01 AM What we really needed was not to let a guy come in all alone one shift after taking a lead.
true, and if a guy does sneak in for a good bad-angle chance it would be great if our goalie came up with a big save.
Ducksforcup 03-08-2006, 01:02 AM Ot.
Ducksforcup 03-08-2006, 01:03 AM Ducks Win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First star on the Ducks...Jiggy. :yo:
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 01:03 AM It was a bit of a bad angle, but Bernier on his off wing improved his shooting angle.
WE SCORE!!!! DON'T KNOW WHO GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
McDonald19 03-08-2006, 01:03 AM wow...I don't know how that puck went in but we'll take it...
I thought for sure Thornton was going to score on that breakaway.
Spiral 03-08-2006, 01:04 AM Ducks Win!!!
Way To Go, Ozo!!!!
Ducksforcup 03-08-2006, 01:04 AM Ozo Got The Goal!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a play by Ozo. He took the slapshot, then hit the puck off Marleau's stick in the net!!! :yo:
McDonald19 03-08-2006, 01:04 AM First star on the Ducks...Jiggy. :yo:
Andy Mac = 1st star
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 01:05 AM That was a crazy exciting game.
Hockeyfan02 03-08-2006, 01:05 AM The hockey gods don't hate us in this one! Doesn't matter who scored. Giggy was HUGE tonight, without him the Ducks lose this game. 3 points back now, we're not sellers at the deadline. Ozo got it.
Ducksforcup 03-08-2006, 01:05 AM Andy Mac = 1st star
He was the only reason we were in the game in the third period, but yah I agree. :)
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 01:05 AM I thought for sure Thornton was going to score on that breakaway.
You mean Giguere made a huge save?
McDonald19 03-08-2006, 01:07 AM You mean Giguere made a huge save?
as slow as Thornton was going Hayward could have made that save.
Jerky Leclerc 03-08-2006, 01:10 AM How good was the Fedoruk-Getzlaf-Perry line? They absolutely outworked the San Jose defensmen along the board.
Ducksforcup 03-08-2006, 01:13 AM Jiggy made 44-48 saves. We wouldn't have won without him imo.
The Lupul line came back to life today and the kid line dominated. :)
No need to say anything about Andy Mac. He has been so good this season, that we have come to expect this kind of play from him. :)
Chistov23 03-08-2006, 01:19 AM We wouldn't have won without him imo.
Are you sure? There is a rumour going around that Hayward stops Joe Thornton on breakaways to..... :sarcasm:
Getzlaf/Perry have been great the last 3 games, tonight especially. The first goal was all Perry even though he was stepping onto the bench when we scored. He held the puck while everyone changed and then he stayed out and kept the cycle going before changing at a good time.
Huge win that can buy us some time, hoping that the pre-olympic Ducks show up....
Chistov23 03-08-2006, 01:21 AM true, and if a guy does sneak in for a good bad-angle chance it would be great if our goalie came up with a big save.
bad-angle if he was left handed, good angle on the off wing. He was on a partial break and had room to cut across if he chose. He fooled Giguere on the play. Don't be shy and admit Giguere is playing great.
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 01:26 AM bad-angle if he was left handed, good angle on the off wing. He was on a partial break and had room to cut across if he chose. He fooled Giguere on the play. Don't be shy and admit Giguere is playing great.
Better trade him for a 4th round pick while his value is high. :sarcasm:
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 01:30 AM as slow as Thornton was going Hayward could have made that save.
Stupid.
Randall Graves* 03-08-2006, 01:38 AM The ducks are very fortunate to get 2 points. at the start of the 2nd/3rd periods they had no energy..they better get with the program. Exciting game, with some marginal officiating for both sides.
I thought Corey Perry was the best player on the ice, first goal he had a big hand in even though he didn't get it, strong along the boards, even threw a few hits and that was a pretty goal he scored. Not your typical hi lite reel goal but a goal that he worked extremely hard to get. A+ effort from him.
Giguere gave up 4 goals, but I feel like he stole this game, nothing really soft, several high quality saves, and a HUGE break away save on Thornton in OT which subsequently leads to the winning goal. He's been on top of his game post Olympics.
Andy Mac is the mvp is this team. it seems like he scores so many clutch goals, TS made a very nice pass to him for the 3rd goal. But the line wasn't overly dangerous(teams only have to focus on two guys basically) but I can't complain much about two goals.
Outside of Scott Niedermayer the defense was bad, turnovers galore these guys were very fortunate Giguere played as well as he did. Wouldn't mind seeing Dipenta back in.
by the way, did anyone catch Burkes comment about the cap and how NFL teams use it? saying they just replace their ufa? perhaps an omen for Carney and Salei?
lux_interior 03-08-2006, 01:45 AM Outside of Scott Niedermayer the defense was bad, turnovers galore these guys were very fortunate Giguere played as well as he did. Wouldn't mind seeing Dipenta back in.
I agree with everything in your post but this. Ozolinsh took DiPenta's place. I know Ozo is a high wire act, but I'd rather watch him than DiPenta any day.
sammyp 03-08-2006, 01:47 AM Wouldn't mind seeing Dipenta back in.
I'm glad someone else finally agrees with me. IMO, DiPenta should be playing right now, which is why I wouldn't care too much if Carney was traded (even though we're in the race).
braincramp 03-08-2006, 01:50 AM If the Ducks were to win their games-in-hand, they would be tied with Colorado, and trail LA, Vancouver, and Edmonton by one point each. :D

The poor defensive play tonight was really annoying. Ozolinsh wasn't much of a culprit, but Salei, Vish and Beauchemin were a few times. Dipenta if anything is atleast steady in the defensive zone and always makes the safe play..whereas some of the higher skill guys keep trying to pass across the center and you're just asking for trouble. I'm really curious to see how Burke handles the deadline.
first star: Patrick Marleau..sorry had to do it.
bleuer 03-08-2006, 02:04 AM talked to teemu...no news about a new contract...
getzlaf had icepacks on his left shoulder...said that's still not ok after he dislocated(sp?) it earlier this season...
Chistov23 03-08-2006, 02:07 AM talked to teemu...no news about a new contract...
Thanks for bringing it up, I expected an answer like this. So he didn't say if they had talked at all about it? Oh well, hopefully he stays.
Spankatola Jamnuts 03-08-2006, 02:14 AM Another great game from Giguere, Mac and the kids. I guess I was alone in liking Ozo's game tonight. He created a lot of chances for us.
Perry had a great game, it's funny to me that he got nailed by Fedoruk on a long shift, and then Getzlaf steamrolled him after his goal.

Right, but none of Salei, Vish or Beau will be a healthy scratch in favor of DiPenta. At least not as things stand now. Maybe if one continues to cough it up.

I agree with your assessment on Ozolinsh, as long as I don't notice him defensively I consider it a solid game for him.

You're right, but if a trade is made a dman will probably be leaving. Nothing against those 3 as for the most part they've played well this year.
Lyons71 03-08-2006, 03:57 AM The puck apparently was replaced with a grenade tonight.
Except for when Perry was on the ice, San Jose generally owned the Ducks...
Lupul's goal was greatly in thanks to Perry for staying out and not changing until everyone else was done. (That being said, I think it was Perry's best game this year. He is really improving and I'm truely enjoying it)
Vish had a tough game. Aside from a few hits, he got stuck a lot and lost many battles.
What the hell happened to McDonald? This guy used to not be good. Even earlier this year he couldn't score, but now he's a force. If it weren't for him, the Ducks would've lost a lot of games this season. Definitely making a run at 2nd half MVP.
I think Ozo had a fine game. I like our D in general, when we're not playing Cheechoo or Dallas.
I wasn't that impressed with Giguere's game... He really should've stopped the tying goal in the third. He was almost on the goal-line.
The only 2 times I noticed Marleau were when he got beat down the ice by Penner (to touch up the icing) and when he scored on his own net. Good game by him.
**Oh, and after Perry's goal they showed the crowd and I swear the guy they put the camera on was Jerry Springer. Anybody else notice?

Chistov23 03-08-2006, 12:32 PM And our goaltender really stole the game for us. In all reality, you have to give him credit for the win. He stole the points."
Thanks primarily to Giguere, the Ducks (29-20-12) crept to three points back of the Edmonton Oilers,
