Trade: G Hurme (ATL) traded to Ducks for Joel Steppzot 03-01-2006, 02:56 PM http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=156648&hubname=nhl MightyAdam 03-01-2006, 03:00 PM well, Hurme has NHL experience and in the past was supposed to be real good. When he was with the senators, here is something from an article I read about him... "The Senators are extremely high on this Finnish athlete many think is Ottawa's netminder of the future. The three-year pro has been a splendid IHLer and now deserves a shot at winning a full-time job in Ottawa. A solid season in Grand Rapids has raised his stock considerably. Named to the IHL's second all-star team, Hurme was solid in the postseason as well. Seems like Hurme only needs a solid camp to start receiving a regular NHL paycheck." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 78) "The 26-year-old Finn was solid and came as advertised in his first full NHL season. Very athletic and quick, he instilled confidence in his teammates by stepping in when Patrick Lalime wend down due to injury [and] playing very well. He's competitive, but displays a cool demeanor and doesn't get rattled after a bad goal. Hurme will be a No. 1 goalie some day, but it will do him well to watch and learn more as a backup. Expect 20-25 starts." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 80) "The calm and collected Finn has progressed smoothly in his first two seasons in Ottawa. Hurme's play was so solid early last season that he temporarily took over the No. 1 job from a struggling Patrick Lalime. The quick netminder only raised his value with a stellar performance at the Winter Olympics. Hurme's primary weakness is his puckhandling skills, which he must improve at the NHL level. Now entering his third season, Hurme could continue to push for playing time should Lalime struggle once again. Otherwise, the 27-year-old might force a trade down the road in order to become a true starting goalkeeper." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 78) ...sounds like a pretty good goalie actually and if Burke got him to trade Giguere, I think Hurme might be a decent back-up to Bryzgolov...would he be a steal? yet to be determined... but if he once took over for Lalime with an elite team like the Senators, then he might be an ok back-up here for Anaheim...but who know's really why the Ducks got him plus, the article says he has a cool demeanor and doesn't get rattled after a bad goal....haha this sounds the oppostite of Giguere... maybe Burke was disgusted enough by the way Giguere acted in the Edmonton game that to show who's boss not only might he be thinking of trading Jiggy, but he will replace him with someone who responds the opposte way of Jiggy responds after a bad goal...calm, cool and under control here is the article I got the info from...http://hockeygoalies.org/bio/hurme.html Kevin Forbes 03-01-2006, 03:04 PM with Kochan out with a broken ankle, this helps out Portland tremendously McDonald19 03-01-2006, 03:08 PM pretty nice trade by Burke. Stepp is an ECHLer who Burke wasn't going to give a new contract to after this season. Hurme will be a UFA in July so there is no long term commitment there. Hurme will be the starter in Portland and Wall can go back to the ECHL. I wonder if this trade is to give Bryzgalov a veteran backup when Giguere is traded in the next week or so. Probably not. Walzy 03-01-2006, 03:16 PM @MightyAdam this article is nearly 5 years old...and Hurme was out of Hockey about two years... :dunno: Ville Isopää 03-01-2006, 03:23 PM I belive this is just a move for the farm. Hurme could ofcourse suprise. Before the injury he was a solid NHL goalie. But now, nobody knows what he can do.. Chistov23 03-01-2006, 03:42 PM pretty nice trade by Burke. I wonder if this trade is to give Bryzgalov a veteran backup when Giguere is traded in the next week or so. Probably not. Yea this trade is for Portland only. Kimi 03-01-2006, 03:47 PM Yea this trade is for Portland only. At first yes, but it does help Anaheim. It means we've got a decent spare keeper for the rest of the year, something we've not had incase of injuries to Giggy or Bryz. CANUCKS 03-01-2006, 06:16 PM i bet u burke got him to play in anaheim..i would know he was a gm and he does stuff like that i dunno TheJoeMan 03-01-2006, 06:44 PM i bet u burke got him to play in anaheim..i would know he was a gm and he does stuff like that i dunno Like other have said, Kochan got injuried and Hurme was assigned to Portland already. He'll only be here if Jiggy or Bryz get hurt and in that instance he'll unlikely see any ice time. Minor trade, nothing more. Fravashis 03-01-2006, 09:47 PM just hope he doesnt try and sue you guys :handclap: dunwoody_joe 03-01-2006, 09:55 PM Like other have said, Kochan got injuried and Hurme was assigned to Portland already. I doubt Hurme is ready for more than ECHL as he works his way back into playing shape. He comes with a $1M price tag--so this is a short term salary dump. Hurme is UFA at season's end. In return, Stepp seems also destined for the ECHL. Maybe some upside but who knows really. I don't see him as a legit contender for a roster spot on the Thrashers. I would have rather a draft pick but dumping the salary and opening a goalie spot for a young kid coming up is probably worth the deal for Atlanta. This deal ain't winning a cup for either of our clubs! ;) Kimi 03-02-2006, 02:23 AM just hope he doesnt try and sue you guys :handclap: Why would he do that? psycho_dad 03-02-2006, 02:59 AM Why would he do that? When he got sick, Thrashers tried to break their contract and stop paying him so he was a horrible selfish pig and asked them to respect the contract.. Some people think that was wrong obviously. Some people think that was wrong obviously. Thanks, I didn't hear anything about that. Could be truble. jamiebez 03-02-2006, 04:50 PM I wonder if this trade is to give Bryzgalov a veteran backup when Giguere is traded in the next week or so. Probably not. Actually, that was my first reaction upon hearing this. Some more info on Hurme from a Sens fan... he was a very popular and very talented backup here until they traded him in favor of the cheaper Martin Prusek in 2002. The trade was slightly controversial at the time, since a lot of people were down on Patrick Lalime (if only we knew how much worse he would get ;)) and saw Hurme as the goalie of the future, in part because he played so well for Finland at the 2002 Olympics. The back injury he got in Florida pretty much changed all that, though. If he is healthy, and hasn't lost much in the last two years off, he would be a more-than-capable NHL backup, IMO. Yeah but we have the 6th best goals against in the league, why in the hell would we trade Giguere? His contract? We are over 4 mil under the cap and still haven't filled any of that up. Trading Jiggy wouldn't make any sense, any at all. Bryzgalov is a great backup but he has yet to prove himself and our offense is not good enough to test it on him now. Plus, Atlanta was plagued with injuries in goal this year and this guy has only flaoted in the minors all year? I don't care how good he WAS. He's 31, recovering from a terrible injury and is going to be a UFA. He's plugging up a spot in Portland, end of story. Talentless Practise 03-02-2006, 06:00 PM Plus, Atlanta was plagued with injuries in goal this year and this guy has only flaoted in the minors all year? He hasn't played the whole year IIRC, just a few weeks now. The first week he played on ECHL he was the goalie of the week. Well that just reitterates my point on his back injury. No knock on the ECHL but best goalie of the week means squat when it comes to the NHL. Such negativity JoeMan are u sure you're not another organization's fan masquerading as a DUCKS' FAN :sarcasm: Where were you when Anaheim allowed Portland to sign Naumenko about three months ago then let him 'float' to Bridgeport and Albany when they went and got Kochan??????? It's not like Hurme was given a chance anyhow he wasn't even playing with the assigned Thrashers' ECHL AFFILIATE (Columbia is aligned w/ VAN) Besides how many games have you seen the affiliate play, JOEMAN, to make that assessment nor how many games did u see Stepp play in Anaheim?????? :amazed: TheJoeMan 03-03-2006, 06:07 AM Such negativity JoeMan are u sure you're not another organization's fan masquerading as a DUCKS' FAN :sarcasm: Where were you when Anaheim allowed Portland to sign Naumenko about three months ago then let him 'float' to Bridgeport and Albany when they went and got Kochan??????? I've seen Hurme play when he was with the Senators and he okay, some time ago. But the negativity is driven towards those who think acquiring a minor league that has already assigned to our minor league team is supposed to pave the way for Jiggy to be traded. That's absurd. So many teams would kill to have Jiggy and we seem to can't wait to get rid of him. Bottom line, Giguere is a top-rate starter, Bryzgalov is a rookie and Hurme is a minor leaguer. Simple as that. He hadnt played competitive hockey in over two years, there was no way he deserved to be paid. Dreamgirl 03-04-2006, 11:47 PM ... thats kinda a biased way of looking at it ... but alright.
