Finland is the favourite. If Niittymäki is good and they can get the game flying right away and 1st line is in shape this should be a win. If USA can get the Finns speed away and stay out of the box they have a chance. But still it will be a close game and everything can happen. I say 3-2 or 3-1 to Finland.

Finnish coach wants more goals from Olli Jokinen and the whole 2nd line. (J.Jokinen and Peltonen) I agree, we need goals from others too. Can the 1st line fly in every game?

Let's see BRING IT ON! :yo:

Achillee's heel? Finns 2nd line. Peltonen and J.Jokinen are like replicas of each others. There should be one grinder, or some energetic forward like Hagman there, to make that line actually work like it should. J.Jokinen does not shoot, at all, and his speed is way too slow. Peltonen seems to be rather weak with the puck, but he's good in forecheck. So, swap Hagman to 2nd, put J.Jokinen on 3rd with Kapanen and Laaksonen.
Bench Hentunen.

There we'd have somewhat better lineup for this game.

1st line might be extra cautiously guarded, for a reason.

US game yesterday, seemed a lot better than any of their earlier in the starting round. They oughta be ready for a win as well, unless they're starting with Esche.

NO predictions for score, I never get 'em right anyways... :sarcasm:

Hows the atmosphere in Finland?

I heard you commenators were saying that Sweden intentionally missed shots ect. against Switzerland. Thats just ridicoulus. They didn't come to play but saying that they intentionally missed shots is just made up BS.

The only reason I can come up with that is that Finland are extremely nervous of loosing in the QF?

Too slow...

Anyway, this a huge game. Not only Team USA gets it's rematch but Team Finland losing would be a big disappointment. Still, quite possible. Both teams want to win of course. Which team wants it more, wins. There's no big skill difference but with Finland being a slight favorite to win I'd expect a good game with Team Finland slightly controlling the game.

Sorry, but I really don't know what some people have against V. Peltonen or J. Jokinen. Peltonen is at least able to score or to give intelligent passes for others also J. Jokinen. You only have to check the player statistic of team Finland to see who is bad.

In my opinion J. Ruutu has nothing to do in the finnish national team. Almost all forwards in the finnish national team have scoring points or assists points at least or a +balance when they are on the ice, only J. Ruutu, J. Hentunen, A. Laaksonen and M. Koivu not. J. Ruutu is only the "king of penalties by the Finns.

Hagman?
You suggest swopping a guy who won't shoot for a guy who can't shoot?
Hagman has gotten himself into scoring positions several times in this tournament and has been incapable of shooting and scoring.
His only hope of scoring would be if the atoms of the puck perfectly aligned themselves with those of the goalie and flew straight through him. The chance of that is 1 in thirty trillion billion or something.

Yes, our announcers play in Team Finland so put all your savings on USA because they sure are nervous!! :sarcasm:

Honestly, the game last night looked like Sweden was trying to miss shots and especially on the 5 on 3 powerplay they kept passing the puck from almost certain scoring positions. And kept coughing up the puck in the neutral zone and their defensive zone.

Sweden tanked that game on purpose, but can anyone blame them? They had a chance to pick Switzerland, anyone would have done the same.

More to the point: I like him as an announcer, but he just doesn't know hockey well. I wouldn't take anything he says seriously. The stuff about Swedes shooting three meters wide from tow meters was funny though, as was Modin "falling" on a partial breakaway and Tellan getting a "careless" penalty right after for shooting the puck out of the rink.

The FIN 3rd line of Pikkuhakki-Kapanen-Nemo
has picked up their game a little bit. I'd say they
could step up in this game too.

Of course Teemu-Saku-Jere is the most dangerous
one, Ville-OJ-JJ should start finding the net a little
more often and hopefully even the "chain gang" with
Laaksonen-MKoivu-Ruutu can put pressure on the
US defense. Hentunen starts as the 13th warrior today.

Def looks like this:
Timonen-Numminen
Nummelin-Salo
Berg-Lydi

And AJ as the 7th D.

Sami Salo scores today?

If my team (the Finns) played like they have played so far, this should be a victory for us. But then again the team USA can play very good play off hockey. So I'm not guessing any scores but I'll be watching the game very intensively. Thank God YLE will show the whole match direct from Torino.

It will be important for both teams that their goalies make the important saves. I don't think there will be so many shots against either of them, so they can't let any easy shots go into the net.

Our forwards should definitely go out and constantly challenge Hatcher and Chelious, maybe Schneider too. This is our key to victory. There's no way in heck guys like Hatcher can stop our offense.
But of course it all comes down to goaltending. We really seem to struggle with that in every sudden death-situation. Just remember Noronen against Canada in '04 WC. His weak performance pissed me off for weeks.

I think it's possibly Nieminen could play on the second line, he seemed to click with OJ... But I like that line, except that none of Ville, Olli or Jussi seems to go straight for the net... Too much passing game... Now in playoffs it's important to have more than one effective line.

This will be a hard game, The US always seems to bring out their strongest play against Finland.

The word Suomi for the country of Finland has a couple of theories about it's origin.

One is it that it's from the Sápmi word for Land of Sápmi (easily enough, the word is Sápmi, and is pronounced almost like Suomi, and it could have developed with the finnish language). Or that it's from the old-old-karelian word for storyland which should be almost like Suomi.

Guys like Gionta, Gomez and Rolston are the key to US victory. NONE of Niemi, Nummelin nor Berg should be played when these guys are on the ice.

Someone said TSN yesterday, but I could not find location for radio link..I searched everywhere...

if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated....Italians are so freakin insecure..if they are not in it, they don't play it...among other things.

I hope I will be wrong, but just in case...

Seems like a fair numer of posters on the Finnish board (Jatkoaika) think that the only way the US can win this one is if the Canadian  referee hands the game to them. :shakehead While I don't agree with this assessment at all, I do think the US obviously faces an uphill battle. At this stage of the tournament I don't think Finland will be beaten at it's own game very easily, but if Laviolette has managed to come up with an appropriate and efficient gameplan (one that shuts down the Koivu line), I can see the US pulling an upset. You never know.

Only a few more minutes before the puck hits the ice. Fasten your seat belts, boys and girls! :handclap:

The name Finland is by far older for the nation, dating back to the latin name "Finlandia", meaning "Country of those who move around", which was referring to the Fenni people (who were made up mostly by tavastians).

The name Suomi, or even the thought of having the different regions and different finnish tribes, or peoples together under an own name is "new", as it was formed as earliest in the 1830's and the name Suomi first occuring as a name for all the regions in the 1870's, and established as a finnish official name for the region some 10 years earlier, and further established with the independence in 1917.

just curious, has ruutu ever had a serious injury or been cheapshotted like the way he cheap shots other people and gotten injured?

he's been at it awhile now so i dont' really expect any real retaliation against him for his play in the olympics, but it certainly is annoying that some players will go too far over the edge because they know they can get that "freebie" in and other teams won't want to retaliate in the same way and face harsher consequences

The majority of teams assured of advancing "dogged" it yesterday. Most played their backups, didn't double shift their stars, rolled all the lines, etc... Ref's trying his best... we'll see much more of that later in the game.
That is the only chance for north american teams in this tournament. NHL ref's try make sure that Canada and Usa make it to medals.

after that call on koivu that goal was poetic justice.

PS. that hit on Ruutu was dirty (hit to the head iihf rules: atleast 2+10mins)

you seem to have a good handle on the rules of hockey :sarcasm:

I don't understand why you Europeans think that the Canadian ref favors the US. That's a bunch of crap considerin the US and Canada are huge rivals. That's like one of us accusing a Swedish ref of favoring the Finns.

That was a good call. Koivu held Cole along the boards for a little too long.

Anyone that has Rutuu on its roster is not allowed to complain about officiating. Plain and simple...this guy should have been kicked out of the tournament a while ago...

For the sake of the health of the Finns. they would not want this game to get out of hand...I could see Chelios and and Hatcher starting to let their tempers boil over a bit...

FFS you NA fans make me so pissed this is IIHF not NHL rules they differ pretty much.

Hit to the head IIHF : atleast 2+10, 5+20 if player gets an injury

thats just how the rules are I can't help it
